No they don't. It has more to do with the company structure and how things are being run. It has mostly to do with people who make the decisions and greenlight games like these instead of what people want. Based on FFXIII-2 sales, it's clear that more than 50% of people who bought FFXIII didn't return, now will they return for Lightning Returns?

SE still has a lot of talent, they just don't have a proper direction. The latter matters a lot.

All that was a large part of Sakaguchi's job when he was at Square, so the same point applies. He was basically managing Square's whole game department by the 16-bit era until he left the company about midway through the PS2 era. He was the guy who essentially decided what they made and who worked on what project.

Third time's the charm? Yeah, right - we'll see...

Already suffered through two games. I must see how this all ends!

I suffered through one game and a half.

Never again!! Well, unless this one turns out alright, which I heavily doubt will be the case.

FFXIII was meh but XIII-2 redeemed it and was my first platinum trophy game, was very good... but fuck, XIII-3 looks like a step backwards

They do have resources, S-E is doing quite well. The fact is, as I mentioned, key people have total decision-making power of what gets approved for production. These people are Kitase and by extension Toriyama. Lightning is Toriyama's baby and he tries to push her as a means of becoming a known and respected game director like Sakaguchi (I'm sure Kitase is thinking the same way). Wada doesn't seem to care, Nomura is like: "whatever, I'm going to hang out with Cloud" and doesn't care either.

I'm sure S-E has a number of junior employees that would make great FF titles, but they are not in charge. Toriyama is.

See their stock prices lately? It lost half a % yesterday (guessing b/c of trailer) and sits around $12. I personally don't consider that good.

They clearly lack people, if Wada approved XIII-3 is because they can kept using recicled assets so they can keep the development in 2 years. Even so they needed outsorcering (tri-ace) to complete XIII-2 in that timeframe.

They still have quite a bit of money sitting around.

Just saw it, and I must say wow, the shades at the end looked really dumb, the art direction is all over the place, and the gameplay has been reduced to play as Lightning alone doesn't sound exciting at all, if what she said with the "last 13 days" means that the game will work in a time-limit then screw that! No game ever done this right except for Majora's Mask and that's because it has a way of resetting the time.

But, I am getting way ahead of myself here, let's wait and hope for the best.

Can't tell but has the battle theme been remixed? That and the dealwithit.gif is the only redeeming quality of that trailer.

But I will still give it a chance as i'm a final fantasy whore.

Was thinking the backlash won't be as strong in Japan, since visuals isn't a huge priority for them?

Funny thing is it's the opposite even inside S-E. Wada commented in the past mainline FF games have to have cutting-edge graphics, that was the argument why they would've make a new main entry on Wii or DS. Now look what kind of shit passed under the radar.

Found this on wiki:

In an interview published in October 2012, Hiroyuki Ito was interviewed at Tokyo Game Show 2012 and asked if he would consider returning to the Final Fantasy series. He replied, "I'm a working staff, so if the president tells me to do it, I'll do it. [laughs] Talk to Mr. Wada."[46]
[edit]

Although, I guess if he was working on a FF title it would remain completely hidden.

He's not coming back anytime soon.

Any hope placed on S-E is a lost one nowadays.

Yeah, extremely unlikely. :(

last time in ultimania interview he said they were working on int. version of Type-0, that obviously didn't happen.

he has talked plan about more type- games but nothing important...

That otome spoof was a sneak peek I think.

Vita plans for Type 0 were scrapped due to marketing reasons.

I like Gooch, but I doubt him coming back to the company will change anything though. Times have changed, Square's business models have changed too. But yeah, at least he will do a way better job than what these current guys are doing, that's for sure.

Welcome to the future... With companies like Capcom moving to a 2 year dev cycle and Ubisoft releasing a "new" asscreed every year... we're going to start seeing a LOT more of this. Especially when production costs are set to increase again in the coming gen.

Frankly I'd rather have nothing. FF might do good to take a break and come back with a strong entry. Metal Gear did it, why can't Final Fantasy?

Isn't one of the biggest complaints against the FF series so far is there is so little main entries out this gen compared to previous ones?

Main entries - yes, however that is because:

1. FFXIV had to be rescued, Wada recently commented this stopped all of their HD development for 2 years. Obviously they only did that because they are thinking of earning money on it for the next 10 years, might be in for a surprise.

2. They are happy making zillions of spin-offs for iOS/F2P.

In total the number of games with FF in the titles exploded after FFVII.

I wouldn't classify sequels as mainline entries. The complaint is there isn't enough NEW this generation. Players have had the world and characters of FFXIII on consoles and that's it.

I'll buy this when it's $15 in 3 months after release. I bought XIII and XIII-2 at release, beat both of them and actually really enjoyed them both (XIII-2 was pretty awesome, I get some of the XIII hate, but I thought they really improved things in -2).

These games have just dropped in price SO FAST there's no reason to grab them at launch.

I think the main point is that the XIII world has nothing we want to see and Versus has shown to be interesting and contains something new that draws that interest.

This XIII series rehash that completely throws out it's rules in each installment is getting redundant.

You don't see people hating on Type 0 or Versus for this reason because their worlds are new to discover and have their own appeal.

I honestly think Toriyama is making the game for himself.

Yeah... I don't doubt it.

Well dropping XIII sequels would be a start.

I don't think that would change anything since they seem to be making sequels to XIII in result of XIV's failing.

That first point seems to be a huge gamble.

I wonder if they are even capable of churning out multiple mainline FFs for current or even next gen consoles. I could see Wada making a series off of newer mainline FFs to save costs.
