Microsoft and Samsung demos "Xbox display"

Great potential for FPS games. The FOV could really help for spotting other players.

Additional skill based FPS's as well.

You could do a whole mess of extra things on the side. Honestly depending on power you could use one wall as a screen for a 2nd player, or some other viewing port for a basic game.

What about a Space Ship Fighter game. Flying your ship. With each side being a cockpit view watching asteroids zip by.
Or one side having instruments and such. Or the second player fixing ship damage in another game style while you fly around. It doesn't all have to be snow.

I wonder what that device connected to the Xbox is (on the right).

In case it wasn't answered, thats a wireless adapter for a Logitech keyboard.

Seems like a gimmick. Besides im already gaming on a 90 inch projector screen and that up close enough that i dont need shit popping out the sides.

I do see a lot of potential in the oculus rift, especially for hardcore gamers that mostly play alone.

They will not offer the same experience. IllumiRoom expends the visual effects of a game. Rift puts you “inside” the game environment.

I keep seeing Rift comments but I thought that was a dev concept, lower resolution and in your straight vision versus something like this versus on the peripheral. In all honesty they don't feel connected at all.
Ignoring the fact that Sony and MS both seem to have plans for glasses obviously.
They're really not. The two devices are different takes on immersion so I see why they're comparing them but they are such wholly different takes on that concept that it's unnecessary. Their goals and what they are delivering are too different to compare the two.

Interesting concept....but with my screen size, I'm already experiencing this in MUCH higher fidelity. Though I do like the ambient effects and world distortion stuff, not sure how you'd get this to work on anything but smaller displays...

I agree. I have a 140 inch projector screen and even I am excited for both. Bigger screen doesn't equal what is going on here at all. Totally different thing. And Oculus is also different.

Don't know why so many are comparing the two since one can be appreciated by anyone in the room and the other...not so much. Oculus is for a super-niche within the 3D/VR geek circle. I want a final retail model of that, too, but it is not comparable to this.

People in the mainstream won't even wear 3D glasses.....yea I'm sure a full on headset is gonna just TAKE off!

Oh Gaf

Personalty I think this tech looks f'ing cool as shit(as long as they can keep the price down) and lots of uses\ possibilities......think about how bad ass this would be for house parties!

Man, if I could point to the HUD on my wall and twist shit around like Minority Report, I'd shit my piss.

Also, I want a game from Kojima with this tech. Wow...this sounds like talking about the potential Wii could have way back when.

The reason people are comparing is because Rift is insanely immersive compared to this. Not to say this isn't but it will be nowhere close to what the Rift offers. It can def wow and makes far more sense for enjoying movies, music and games with the family but as a gamer Rift should make you far more excited. Playing a horror game on the Rift will be soooo good.

Which is why as a gamer that is far more exciting to me. This is cool as well but for different reasons.

Rift could simulate a room with a TV in the middle that you're playing on, and peripheral images on the 'walls'

Wait. I keep seeing this. Rift isn't an actual hi def normal viewing monitor right? The last things I read said it was a low def display. So isnt Rift more like version maybe 1 of 3? With 3 being the retail?
If not I am much more interested in Rift. I thought, and read, that it was just some tech for a far future retail product that might be there at some point. Which is also cool but sort of...not the same thing.

Well that blew my fucking mind. I didn't really know what to expect when checking the video but it sure wasn't that!

I have the perfect place for this too. Very cool. I hope it becomes a reality.

An entertainment cave is the only real enticement for me purchasing a home. This adds to the draw, though I don't believe MS research reels.

Video actually has me intrigued.

Obvious concerns are price and how it actually gets implemented in every game. Would suck to fork over cash for this and have inconsistent results vary by game.

The other concern is the quality of the screen itself. Don't see people ditching much higer quality screens for a subpar screen with this feature. But color me interested!

So playing a game that generates a room you sit in, so you can play a game that replicates the real room you are currently sitting in...

Rift doesn't make for the same reason 3D gaming doesn't excite me. I need to wear some uncomfortable crap in order to use it.

Currently yes. But the creator of Rift said the final consumer version will be in HD. People who have used it are going crazy in CES stating that nothing has wowed them like this in such a long time. There is a detailed discussion on Verge with a live demo as well. Its stunning even when it is low res. I can only imagine how it will look in HD. It is a gamechanger if they can somehow resolve the form factor. It will be very difficult to market it otherwise. They are looking to put this in consumer hands later this year and Carmack has confirmed Doom 4 will
be running on Rift.

I have not seen people this excited for a product in a long time. It does not have any of the drawbacks of 3D but I can understand some people will not dig wearable computing which is why I said it will be very difficult to market unless there is somehow make the form factor palatable.

Gimmiky but nice to have for everybody.

I think Augmented Reality glasses is better and can do everything this does. If Sony is able to come out with the Omni glasses with the system for an affordable price, they will dominate no matter how weaker their system is.

But but but, gaf-ers were saying the glasses rumors were a bag of poo

Occulus is just an expensive wearable 3d TV. :shrug

Augmented Reality is the next big thing. Who ever gets that right, dominates the field of consumer electronics for the next decade(s).

I don't want shitty, laggy, low res particles shooting all over my shitty room when I can be fully immersed with a wide FOV and head tilt controls with the Rift.

Ok. So I will consider Rift at like 1.5 for revision. Farther along than I thought but everyone I talked to who used it said it was cool but needed a ton of work and the low res was a killer. They didn't dislike it at all. Just felt that as a retail package with a good deal of support, it seemed far far off.

Improvements inbound than my money will be outbound. Once it gets a good deal of game support. Very cool!

Yeah more of the room set up. Projector low because of ceiling fan, being 6'4" etc. Perhaps I'll PM you for info how you do it without jumping in the way of the projector.
Ya PM me. We install a good deal of projectors and I can usually figure out a fix. I hear you though. Projector gaming is AMAZING...but has its own caveats.

Rift reminds me of that vr headset that was supposed to come out for the mega drive.

VR is still eons of man.

Sure, makes sense. So one is for you and the other is not. Cool.
I might be interested in both but I fear the Rift will be bad for my eyes because of the close focus, but I am sure there is some logic to it I don't know of.

tech definitely looks better than MS version.

It has a flashier demo for sure, but the actual technology behind MS' looks superior.

Sony simply said they did no post-production or editing afterwards. However, more than likely they had to specially create the video to be projected for that room, the actors and assistants had to continuously be rearranging the room and putting new costumes on to make the video look good. Since the MS version has Kinect, no pre-processing is required, and since it has a 3D camera it can automatically adjust the perspective for objects in the room. It's a much more realistic technology.

What about when you have friends over? The IllumiRoom looks like it would be much better to have in that situation. But I think the Rift and this are created for different purposes and shouldn't be directly compared. The Rift is great for VR, but I think the IllumiRoom is targeted more towards AR.

No offense, but that video reminds me of the early Kinnect videos. This has disappointment written all over it. I'll believe it when I see it...

Without Kinect(2.0 probably) this tech does not work....room has to be scanned in 3D first for it to project properly in realtime.

Holy christ. I just checked a couple other places. The hype for this went from 0 to 100 FAST. Damno.

Next up SCENTOVISION.

The guys at CES said that when the player who was in the dark corridor was asked to look back and he turned 360 degrees to look back and actually see the back of the corridor it was surreal. Here is a demo recently at CES. The second vid.

There is another Vid where the Verge guys were reviewing their experience at CES and were talking for a long time about how the Rift was the best thing to come out of the show.

Yep I had already seen those. Far out for sure once they fix all the issues. I am definitely down for getting one of each of these things.

I just meant, screens as in - the various options that are on the market. If a gamer has a choice between a higher quality screen, vs this screen (and it's lower quality in comparison to competition but has the Illumi feature), I would have to think most gamer's would choose the higher quality screen. Not saying this will be the case. Just saying IF. I'm also assuming this Illumi feature will tack on the price.

Basically, I'm just saying it needs to deliver on quality and performance. Which is just stating the obvious. When I said screens I just meant - all the screens that will be available on the market to choose from (it has to compete with those).
