Eurogamer/CVG Rumor: Sony to have new controller for PS4; CVG: PS4 unveiling in weeks

Made my skin crawl...

The current design needs to be scrapped. My allegiance is up for grabs next gen, but not if Sony sticks with the archaic dual shock design.

As someone stated before, "4" is a bad omen in japan. I don't want it to be called Playstation 4; I love me some codenames!

"The Japanese don't like the number 4 and 9 because of their pronunciation. Four is pronounced "shi" which is the same pronunciation as death. Nine is pronounced "ku" which has the same pronunciation as agony or torture."

So the Japanese never got the PS9 commercial?

DualShock sucks and should have been abandoned with PS3. The layout is fine, but the ergonomics are just terrible. Classic Controller Pro and Logitech's dual analog controllers provide perfectly good examples of how to do the same thing, but better.

I wonder if they'll cave to any backlash with their new controller design and just revert back to dualshock like last time lol

Fingers crossed!

DualShock design is a huge part of the Playstation brand for a lot of people i think. Hell, the shape of the DualShock is synonymous with gaming as a whole a lot of the time.

Dammit Sony I'm not as young as I used to be. My brain is already hardwired for the dual shock and my neural pathways are now cemented in place, unable to change to adapt to a new Sony remote. :( It's going to be like learning another language.

DJmizuhara said ages ago that PS4's controller was a radical overhaul vs the DS3. And I think he 'knows things'.

The mention of biometric sensors is interesting. They had a patent filed a little while ago about nerve sensors on a controller.

Well they need to get over superstition sometime.

How about the same layout with handles that are actually comfortable to hold? Would that screw up your muscle memory?

Wonder where they got the touch screen idea from! Though to be honest, after playing the Wii U I want all next-gen systems to have off-screen play, it's such a good feature.

Normally I would say no, but way back when we found out the Vita was the first codename for the PSP2 and in the end turned out to be the final name.

The Vita is partly the reason why they need to stick with the numbered revisions. Nintendo's entire naming strategy at the moment is another, if for slightly different reasons.

The world is waiting for PlayStation 4, and consumers expect there to be a 4th PlayStation. The world doesn't know what the fuck an Orbis is, and its wasted money trying to tell them why and what.

I think they're already taking a risk with the branding by changing up the controller, but people will get over that and that's something that will hopefully be for the better.

Bad news :(

Though I understand part of it is simply that I'm used to it, but the DS3 is a perfect pad for me.

I cannot understand why people prefer the layout of the 360 pad. The triggers are harder to reach - and by that I mean it feels like over extending a fingure to depress them fully - and the stick layout is really wierd.

I guess it's time for Sony to move on though, it's been pretty much the same for a long time now. The PS3 iteration of the back triggers isn't great either, they slant to much leading to slip.

I don't buy that Sony are showing off in a couple of weeks though. To soon.

Would be absolute suicide.

Anything other than adding a number 4 to the end of the word "PlayStation" and acronym "PS" reprents nothing but marketing headaches and confusion amongst consumers. It's pissing money down the drain trying to educate consumers before you've even come to market.

Calling it Orbis, PlayStation Orbis or dropping PlayStation altogether would be a disaster for Sony.

Wait what.

How come it's fine for Sony to call the next playstation the "Playstation 4" but people call out on Nintendo over the Wii U name?

I highly prefer the DS3 over Xbox 360's controller but change is welcome :) I just hope MS will change their controller too.

All microsoft needs to do is change the D-Pad. Hell, sega would probably give them their d-pad for a tiny licensing break.

This. Playstation systems have been my primary gaming systems for the last 15 years. They could have just improved the triggers and not change anything else. Adjusting to a new controller now would be a pain. Good thing from this rumor is that the PS3 controllers is still most likely compatible with PS4.

Finally. Worse controller in a while. People only like it because of habit. People also loved the horse and buggy before the automobile.
