Eurogamer/CVG Rumor: Sony to have new controller for PS4; CVG: PS4 unveiling in weeks

As someone stated before, "4" is a bad omen in japan. I don't want it to be called Playstation 4; I love me some codenames!

"The Japanese don't like the number 4 and 9 because of their pronunciation. Four is pronounced "shi" which is the same pronunciation as death. Nine is pronounced "ku" which has the same pronunciation as agony or torture."
Do the general public really avoid things like this? We do for example have upcoming Monster Hunter 4. I doubt it will sell noticeably less just because of the 4 in the title.

I don't think I am ready to give up on the dualshock, it fits into my hand perfectly though get rid and bring back the classic triggers. Just have multiple controllers like the WiiU.

But this one is comfortable to hold.

It's not horribly uncomfortable to daintily cradle with one's fingers. But actually wrapping your hands around it and like gripping almost any other object? That's not even achievable for all but the smallest of hands, much less comfortable.

The fans will probably just nag them back into the dualshock. I doubt this will have a screen. They can't make a powerful unit and an expensive controller then sell it at an appealing price.

I'm hoping it's a split controller.

Bad news :(

Though I understand part of it is simply that I'm used to it, but the DS3 is a perfect pad for me.

I cannot understand why people prefer the layout of the 360 pad. The triggers are harder to reach - and by that I mean it feels like over extending a fingure to depress them fully - and the stick layout is really wierd.

I guess it's time for Sony to move on though, it's been pretty much the same for a long time now. The PS3 iteration of the back triggers isn't great either, they slant to much leading to slip.

I don't buy that Sony are showing off in a couple of weeks though. To soon.

The triggers are total garbage and the 360 controller is better for the games that are popular in the states.

I honestly doubt a web designer would have anything to do with hardware, but there you go.

I think someone working with SCEE (PSN no less), who probably knows multiple people in different divisions and is in touch with different departments could easily catch wind of this, if not outright leaked to him.

Biometric sensors I can live with, although occasionally I suffer from a racing heart so i've got not idea how that will influence my gameplay lol.

LCD screens on the other hand - gtfo. They are mostly pointless and can easily be substituted with some sort of SmartGlass-esque option which does not inflate the cost. I don't want a repeat of the Wii U where the controller steals money that should rightfully go towards hardware grunt.

I have fairly large hands (well, long fingers) and never had a problem with holding it like that.

Plant me firmly in the Dual Shock > 360 controller crowd. I'm hoping they don't deviate too much from their current design. All it really needs is an adjustment to the L2/R2 buttons. I wouldn't be mad at an LCD screen either as long as it doesn't break the bank to replace.

After hearing the way Gabe Newell talked about biosensors, I was sure Nintendo abandoned the Vitality sensor to build it into the grips of the Wii U controller. Glad Sony was forward thinking enough to go this route (assuming it's true).

Wouldn't mind a touchpad on the back if true. I feel this has a purpose, even if it's not really been exploited well with Vita.

Everyone I know who has played with both the 360 and the PS3 controller extensively, prefer the 360 controller over the PS3 controller. The Dual Shock is outdated.

Please don't add those ugly and annoying things on top of the analog sticks like the 360 has. Keep it smooth with no tabs. I can't play the 360 without being agitated. Such a fucking stupid idea.

Make the handles like the Wii Classic Controller Pro aka the most comfortabls controller.

CVG's record is far from great, but they're the like fifth source to echo something similar to this sentiment.

couldn't they possibly just be regurgitating what other sites have also said about a reveal coming soon? for all we know only ONE site actually got the word from a source, and all the others are just faking it. just sayin.

i AM glad to hear that we're now getting rumors/leaks/whatever on the design itself instead of just specs. wish someone would leak a crude drawing of what the console itself will look like...

I don't have tiny hands and I love how it feels. 360 controller is more uncomfortable IMO.

They need to fix the awful triggers and ship it with a longer charging cable by default. Otherwise it's good enough. I'd suggest swapping the left stick and D-Pad but I know people would cry bloody murder if Sony did that. Shit, copy the WiiU model and swap both just to really fuck with people. I rather enjoy that layout!

please just let it charge off a normal USB charger. Why the DS3 doesn't I have no idea.

- concave triggers, use 360 as a model
- vita dpad
- vita tilt sensors for gyro assisted aim etc

Yon can usually be used instead of Shi for the number 4, so I'm not sure how big the issue is. My understanding is a little limited though and Japanese numbers and counting are a bit more complex than in English.

The L2 and R2 buttons on the sixaxis/dualshock3 are crimes against humanity.

I've never understood the complaints about symmetrical analog stick placement though. My hands are symmetrical, so why on Earth would I want asymmetrical sticks? If your left thumb was 5cm longer than your right thumb then it would make perfect sense to me, but I'm guessing people like that are hard to find.

Good.

Hopefully closer to the superior 360 controller.

They never released the superior 360 controller over here - we just got the standard less-good-than-DS3 one.

Or, you know, maybe controller preference is subjective and anyone who thinks otherwise can fuck off.

He worked on the web side of PSN and prolly working on the next iteration, him knowing something would not be that far fetched.

I think someone working with SCEE (PSN no less), who probably knows multiple people in different divisions and is in touch with different departments could easily catch wind of this, if not outright leaked to him.

It's possible, yeah. I was just saying i doubt a web designer at SCEE would know much about what's happening with hardware design. But yeah it's possible.

First reply was more pointing out that you omitted the "web" part of his job title. Just calling him a "designer" was a bit misleading.

While the DualShock will not be a primary controller for the next PlayStation, it is likely that the range of PS3 controllers will be compatible with the next-gen system. There is a possibility they could be used as secondary controllers, much like with how Wii Remotes interact with the Wii U.

I think this needs to be in the OP, I would love this. Even if the system isn't backwards compatible, at least my Move, Buzz, Singstar, GT Racing wheel and most importantly DualShock 3 controllers will be compatible. I think they are good enough as is, they could introduce a Dualshock 4 with a better design, but if it has no extra features why not let people use their DS3s? It's a good way to keep PS3 owners, especially with software BC looking unlikely.

Death so soon? But, Kaz said Sony was making a comeback!

You don't grip a controller. Ever. The thing should simply rest in your hands. I almost feel like I should be teaching a class on this and I don't even understand how people could mess that up.

Huh? The DS3 uses a standard mini-USB charger?

1) uses mini usb, I'd like to switch to micro
2) doesn't charge from a standard wall socket, only a PS3 or PC. don't know why

oh, and I'm not sure about the idea of a touchscreen. Touch maybe, screen adds cost for potentially limited benefit (I want all the money spent on the guts). And god no rear touch. ugh

When did I say it wasn't subjective? Everyone else here is dishing out their opinions, why can't I?

There is going to be a touch screen for both xbox controller and Sony's controller. Look at new keyboards and wii U..yes times have changed. If they look slimmer then previous versions I dont think it would look good at this time.

Interesting to note that the patent Sony field around biometric sensors on a controller talked about coupling that with a eye gaze tracking. From a camera on your TV and/or on the controller.

The stuff they talk about doing with the bio sensors are pretty interesting.

Judging by their patent filings they've been tinkering with a lot of different stuff, though, so who knows what'll actually make it into the system and what won't.
