Sony could easily partner with (or outright buy) the people making Oculus Rift to make out of the box PS4 support for it at launch a reality.

Alternatively, Sony already has it's own VR headset....

The Blog Share was how fans managed to get Kevin Butler at the E3 conference last year, so there's no reason they couldn't do something similar with the Oculus Rift this year.

thank god, the DS3 is absolute shit. I hate the stick orientation, the fact the top is convex and not concave, the thing is extremely uncomfortable.
Not to mention the horrible built in battery that is not replaceable. If you try and replace the battery or repair a sticky button the whole controller falls apart is pretty difficult if not impossible to put back together.
I don't use my PS3 much, just for exclusives really and I've gone through 2 DS3 controllers with shitty batteries or stuck buttons.

I still have my original 2005 360 controller that looks like it's been through a war, gone through 2 different battery packs but still works fine.

This would be going tangent to their current TV line resurgence initiative.
Also comparing an appearance by an actor already under contract to a peripheral development that could cost in the millions is not the same thing.
 
Sony is a real darkhorse. I don't think anyone knows what to fully expect out of them. I think with Microsoft it's going to be more of the same, but Sony is probably going to distance themselves from the PS3 as much as possible.

It most likely would have been usable, but the design is atrocious to say the least, and in terms of ergonomics, i don't think it could possibly be superior to the dualshock, which i'm not fond of to begin with. I don't think most people disagree with that.

It's a piece of cake to take apart, I've just repaired one my son stood on, the only minor consideration is the triggers which tend to fall out when you take them apart, but they clip back into the base easy enough..

Mind you, the flimsy plastic around the analogue sticks is poor, my 6 year old snapped off a bit just by standing on it accidentally.. although I'm not daft enough to not realise it's not more duress then you can reasonably expect..

I've had one wired 360 controller for my PC.

The only think i've ever had to do was replace the analogs because they were worn down. 4 bucks and 5 minutes to replace them and the controller was as good as new.

I have no idea how many six axis and dual shock 3's i have gone through in that time. They are the most fragile controllers i have ever used.

This sounds kind of expensive. I like the biometric idea though. However I think they should have made a remote style motion controller. All this screen stuff is pointless.

Cake to take apart, that I will agree with.
Putting it all back together is a nightmare though, it is brutal to try and get everything to stay in place and put the bottom and top halves together without stuff moving around (triggers especially).
The first controller I had I simply couldn't do it, I had to toss it which angered me to to no end.

I am really excited to know what can be done with the biometric aspect of it. I guess it would be great for horror/survival games?

Biometrics stuff sounds awesome and always has. Excited to see what Sony brings to the table. I'm sure they'll do much more with it than Valve would in the PC space.

I welcome this. I didn't like the motion push of this generation, but tablet/touch interfaces are nice, as long as there are buttons as well.

Dynamic difficulty based on player stress, whether that means making the game harder when a player loses their cool, or easing up on someone who's getting legitimately frustrated.

Mood stuff, detecting tension.

I see the makers of Journey and games light on gameplay making ample use of this kind of stuff. Heavy Rain devs too. I see most of it not being explicit or heavily influential, but additive and peripheral in its uses.

it all costs money... i bet they will keep DSx and then offer optional integration of Vita as controler which makes most sense.

buy both if you want all of the features... if not, enjoy DSx

When people think of biometrics they seem to think of heart rate or whatever.

But I think what might be being tinkered with here was the nerve analysis stuff mentioned earlier. I think that's the type of stuff Gabe Newell was referring to, in terms of 'widening the bandwidth' around what your fingers are doing with the controller and potentially predicting actions and user intent to reduce latency.

I dunno though! But 'biometrics' is sort of an umbrella term for a number of different things.

Default thumb position depends entirely on the game. What you're saying suggests that DualShock and 360 are both doing it wrong by putting the right analog in the secondary position.

Pretty much. The DualShock is an iconic design for a reason. Why mess with it? Because of the Wii U gamepad?

At least give me the option to keep using my DS3, Sony.

I feel the same way. DS3 is the perfect compromise controller for types of game and sizes of hands.

Unless you play racing games or first person/third person shooters.

It just so happens that first and third person shooters are by far the most popular games in America at the moment.


So in short... Sony needs to make adjustments to appeal to the American market.

Heart rate and blood pressure are fine, but I'm way more interested in biosensors that can detect how strong are you holding controller [they have a patent for that]. If the game can detect that, then it can really lead to new gameplay scenarios [dismantling the bomb by veeeeery gently holding the controller, opening a heavy lock with tight grip on a controller, etc].

I'm kind of excited to see what Sony actually comes up with, but I'm really worried they might royally screw the pooch on this one. At least fix the terrible bluetooth limitation that the PS3 has
