Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance demo is up on Xbox Live and PSN US. PSN EU whenever.

It just didn't click with me. Stylistically and from a combat perspective it felt a bit shallow. The stealth kills are just push a button and watch. The Blade mode mechanic is really cool but I couldn't see myself being wow'd by it for a full campaign.

The combat is anything but shallow.

did you parry at all?

Anyone thinks that the parry needs to be in another button? LS + X just doesn't fit for me.

isnt that what it was in Bayo? its been a while. feels good to me.

It's perfect. The context sensitive stuff works great and if you use it early it still blocks, just not as well. Love how they didn't waste a button just for blocking.

Bayo parry is just forward as you get hit. I imagine they changed that in this to make it less easy to spam

There's more of an emphasis in MGR in defending/evading/countering, it's not a "combo game" like DMC. Even less an aerial combo game like DmC. It's very similar to Ninja Gaiden, strangely enough, considering PG's pedigree. You won't really find crazy combos and such here. If you expected Devil May Cry or the opportunity to create stylish combos and such then it may indeed feel shallow, but it's just a different game.

I think that there will still be some nice combo videos that we see from this game. But yeah, it's definitely much more of a defensive-style game than a Bayonetta or DMC. It seems likely that you'll get a torn apart if you try to approach it like DMC where you're just on the attack at all times.

Played the demo and canceled the pre-order that I made through the Microsoft Store the other day. After playing DmC this just didn't click with me.

I just played the DmC demo for the first time.
Unlike MGR:R, the DmC combat "clicked" with me too, as I wanted to get better at it (the platforming sucked though, for both of them).

oh yeah, thats right. this is very similar though. feels like similar timing. feels great.

that dog boss is straight out of Bayo stylistically. this is very Platinum.

this game is going to be awesome.

Really not feeling it, but I feel like it's because I've gone in cold to a level that's past the beginning.

My pre-order is paid and ready, so I can't wait to start this from the beginning and properly.

This is the NG3 we deserved. Definitely agree. It's like comparing Marvel to Street Fighter.

I don't think there will be anything. The ZOE demo got zilch.

This really hyped me, since I always liked NG more and thought DmC was pretty mediocre. Can't wait for the demo to pop up on PSN.

The demo is still downloading for me but that is very, very encouraging to hear (as are the rest of the impressions which I have, admittedly, skimmed through). I apologise if it has been asked before (and mentioned) but are there various difficulty levels within the demo or is there only a single difficulty option for each of the three stages? I don't recall either Vanquish or Bayonetta's demo having an option to alter the difficulty so I presume that is the same for Metal Gear Rising

EDIT: Thanks Vilix! A very nice surprise (for me at least) as I've not seen it mentioned before so it should be interesting to see how the enemies react at different difficulty levels and if there's a significant change in their behaviour.

The mooks don't last long enough in this demo to make creating a combo video worth it. hopefully in the final game there will be some stronger goons to style upon.

It's obviously not going to be juggle crazy like DMC tho

Yes, there are varying difficulty levels.

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
Nearly every single person I've spoken to who has played the demo, mostly from ZoEHD, has noted how poorly the demo handles the natural learning curve and introduction of moves that you'd experience in the main game. In that there's a ton of shit you can do in the demo that it never bothers teaching, and so the combat system at first feels kinda weird.

I'm honestly waiting to see how the unique weapons come into play in spicing up the variety (played the demo with ZOE collection). Also the enemy AI feels pretty dumb at some times and not as aggressive as NG AI. I hope this changes at higher difficulties, but I just remember when playing NG:S enemies would always be on my ass. In this game only the geckos are kind of like that. Feels like the enemies aren't balanced for Raiden's fast movement like they are in NG.

The combat feels really weird, but like other have said, it sorta just drops you onto your head and tells you to go. I want to see what the full game is like now, though.

... not really a big fan of Blade Mode, however. I can't seem to control it right.

This is what I thought, my initial impressions were kind of week but near the end of the demo I got a better handle on how the game controls. I really want to like this game, so I won't give up on it!

Assuming platinum design philosophy, harder difficulties will probably see more aggressive enemies. Enemies took a huge step up with Bayonetta on harder difficulties.

I played the demo 10 times in a row, it was the feeling of "just one more time, I'll do better!" and this doesn't happen often to me with demos.

The game plays so differently when compared to Bayonetta & DMC, totally different approach on the battle and as jett already mentioned it's definitely closer to the first NG...takes some time to get used to the gameplay and controls/camera but when you get the rhythm of the game it gets fuckin' crazy and makes you feel like an unstoppable cutting machine! ^_^

BTW the graphics look much better than the videos we've seen and of course the 60fps look and feel amazing. Platinum = <3.

I was a little put off by the movement of Raiden. Might not be important to some, but it seemed to me like I was gliding along the floor. Very little tactile feedback with the steps Raiden takes. The weight of the character was solid enough, so I'm not sure how to articulate it.

Regardless, still looking forward to trying out the full game.

Some of you guys should have more faith in Platinum.

Anyway, I spent a majority of my 1st playthrough "cutting at will," didn't expect Blade Mode to be that much fun.

Ugh PSN, UGH XBL Gold, the universe must want me to wait.

The game has always looked more NG than not. It's why I figured the flamewars in the previous Boss battle trailer thread silly. DmC and Rising can coexist with an entire peace, much like DMC and NG did. Day one on both of em.

I think my problem is that blade mode feels like something left over from the previous game that just doesn't fit well with Platinum's style. I don't know if they kept it because it defined rising or because Konami wanted them too but I'd prefer the game a lot more without it.

I feel bad that you guys missed out on the ZOE HD collection (which, yes, wasn't up to snuff framerate wise with the PS2 versions, but wasn't even a nuisance. Also, the games looked absolutely beautiful in HD).

I enjoyed playing this demo back in November, but I may download the PS3 one since I bought the 360 ZOE collection.

No thanks.

I hate when people say shitty framerates aren't a nuisance. Just because you can put up with it doesn't mean others can (or should).

Can't wait to get home and download this, though. :)

The tutorial is really bad, I don't know how to play this game.

Agreed. The tutorial only really covers the slicing mode, and the game itself is impressively complex and plays quite differently than the character action games I'm used to. I came away from the demo with mixed impressions, and unable to beat the section with all the rocket launcher guys and Metal Gears.

Then don't use it. Its this games "hook" can you cop anything any way you want. I loved the demo and the blade feature was solid. It felt powerful.

Anybody know if this is available anywhere for download to a thumb-drive so I don't have to wait a week?

So is there a definitive version to get? I have it preordered for PS3 but I don't want there to be another Bayonetta issue with it.

Super excited for this.

This may be the tipping point for me between this or DmC.

We're all pretty aware of how good DmC is at this point, and I feel like these two games tread the same ground in terms of game play.

I hope to have to get both.

The long ass development time on this game and it has screen-tearing? Get the hell outta here with that garbage.

Blade time, or whatever the hell it's called, sucks. Why do I have to move the camera around with the left stick to get it to slice? It makes it awkward and the movement accelerates too fast or something. Feels janky.
