The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD Announced

We saw zero footage, which is odd considering it's coming out in less than a year. Makes me think these are just test shots that were made during R&D for Wii U Zelda.

I have a feeling it all started out as them just testing out what they could do, and just ran with it. The fact that a lot of people seemed to have been clamoring for it probably urged this decision as well. It's easy money for Nintendo, given that most of the work is already done for them.

I doubt content will get added. There is a big difference between brushing up visuals and actually designing new content.

At best we'll see the following:

Boss Rush
Adjusted Hero's Mode save file (in the original, you only got an alternate costume, which were Link's PJs) for added difficulty such as double damage
Tingle Tuner adjustments (since there's no GBA they'll prob. just make it work with the GamePad)
Triforce fetch quest no longer different between regions
Skippable cutscenes/faster dialogue

That's about what I'd expect. But Aonuma specifically said gameplay... so that could involve a number of different things, from sword play to switching items via the GamePad to adjusting how sailing works to adjusting the Triforce quest etc.

We'll just have to wait and see.

What if that content was almost finished, but left out of the original game regardless due to time constraints? Because from what I know, that was the case with the two missing dungeons.
As some people have said, the unreleased content may have been re-worked for Twilight Princess.

But if that's not the case, it would be amazing if the missing dungeons were put into the game. Sounds like wishful thinking though.

"cut" dungeons are way too much to hope for, at least in the capacity people imagine. if they put in a new dungeon at all, it'll most likely be optional.

as for what they can realistically change, i fully expect them to eliminate or at least vastly reduce Tingle's fee whenever you give him a Triforce chart. maybe they speed up the sailing speed, maybe there's an automatic wind change button. but that fee is the main thing. anyone hoping the Triforce quest won't be there is going to be disappointed, but i think eliminating the part where i have to give Tingle ALL THE FUCKING MONEY IN THE FUCKING WORLD would make that portion of the game much more enjoyable. i personally enjoyed most of the locations that quest took me to.

Why use dolphin emulator screenshots? You guys realize like 95% of Nintendo fans haven't even heard of it and 99% have never used it.

I can get behind:

-using the Gamepad to change wind direction instantly
-lessening the rupee cost for Tingle's maps during the fetch quest

then I don't care for it. I mean even Iwata apolozied because it was rushed and incomplete, if they won't add the missing stuff then what is the goddamned point of this game???

worst remake ever if that's the case
Wind Waker, at least to me, seems to be one of the most overlooked and underrated Zelda's.
A lot of people completely skipped the game or only played a bit before giving up.

It deserves a 2nd chance, especially if they can do some minor improvements to the sailing, ending fetch-quest and such.

Also the style of the game just works so incredibly well in HD..

Seems perfectly rational to me to compare an official HD remaster to what can be obtained from the original through an emulator like Dolphin when we are talking about visuals.

Batteries the CRISIS!
What a disaster. Everything looks like it's being roasted by a July sun in Miami. It doesn't look cel shaded anymore. This is terrible.

The only way they could redeem this project, aside from making the graphics more true to the original, is to make the two dungeons they cut from the game and take out the Triforce quest. But you know they won't do that.

We'll get these graphics and maybe fewer shards of Triforce to collect. What bollocks.

Show me your crystal ball. Or your in-game footage. Or anything that would make declaring this a "distaster" already not astoundingly dumb.

Judging by how much TP changed from the day it was announced to the final product, I wouldn't be so sure.

I thought my statement that I believed that the ocean in the final product would not have waves was absurd enough that the irony was obvious. Apparently I was wrong.

Okay, I was aware of this being a thing. Fancy explaining?

As far as I am aware, the difference lies between the NA release and the Japanese release.

Japanese release has a longer quest to get the Triforce. One of the charts requires you to keep hunting for more charts before you can get the actual Triforce chart. It's like 5 regular blue charts or something before you get the Triforce chart, which is then located on a different island from the chart itself.

In the NA release, they realized this was way too tedious and awful so they cut out hunting the 5 blue charts. Instead, they have you shoot down a particular battleship to get the Triforce chart instead. In the Japanese release, this enemy holds one of the regular blue charts that's used to get the Triforce chart itself.

Long story short, with this release, they'd likely go with the NA version for both regions, thus ridding of that difference completely. And if they implement skippable cutscenes/faster dialogue, speedrunning the game could be oh so much better.

I don't need footage. I see the screenshots and I can tell they've taken the wrong direction with the art style.

Lord. An orchestrated soundtrack would take me OVER THE EDGE. I would be FINISHED. DEAD AND BURIED. The Wind Waker symphonic movement on that Skyward Sword 25th Anniversary album did things to me. I can't even imagine the whole game being on that level.

Agreed with those of you who say the color/lighting looks a bit oversaturated. I'll give Nintendo the benefit of the doubt in this case because I'm sure they'll tweak and improve the graphics by the time it launches. As it stands now, it looks a bit more lifeless and sinister than the Wind Waker has any right to be.

I'm betting that we'll get some new content, whether it be a new dungeon or a slight expansion to the story that gives the game better pacing. Didn't Iwata and Aonuma lament the fact that the Wind Waker was rushed and unfinished? I can't imagine they'll be content with letting this remake have the same problems.

If only... I really doubt it, to be honest. If they do have orchestrated music though I will be there day 1, no matter how the game looks visually (even if it's not the same art style as GCN WW).

Unlikely as most of WW's music is dynamic, changing synths and instruments depending on what you're doing. That effect is near impossible to replicate with a live recording, which is why Nintendo likes synth so much.

Wind Waker has the best exploration in any Zelda games, I agree it is really overlooked.

The overall lack of difficulty of the game makes exploration feel less rewarding, thus easier to overlook.

As I've said before, bosses no longer dropping full heart containers would have helped.

I think that was brought up before in a Iwata Asks session IIRC, and they basically said it's no longer an issue.

I'm not holding my breath on the orchestration bit. Kondo's been fairly adamant that he feels orchestras don't work well for game OSTs.

I will hold my breath for a better triforce hunt.

Man, this means the best iteration of Ganon in HD!

I quite like the lighting and hazy backgrounds. It's just dense and oppressive enough to fit WW's equatorial atmosphere perfectly.

I just can't stop thinking about the weather effects now. They could be REALLY amazing for this remake. Hell, the final battle with Ganondorf could be really enhanced with it, too. It'd look so ridiculously awesome, I can feel it!

And think about the boss models, HNNNNGH.

If enough people are vocal about it, there is a real chance that they will tone down the bloom before release. I imagine it's a simple enough thing to do.

Maybe they will provide an option to turn off the additional post processing and allow us purists to go with simply the resolution bump,

The timeless and simple art style of the original is totally lost with all these NEXT GEN WHOAH filters. It doesn't look bad as a Zelda game, but it's not of the same spirit of Wind Waker.

Hmm, I appreciate the sentiment.

However, the color changes are strange. It's just glaringly obvious in that ND trailer with Aonuma that the original colors just fit the tone so much better.

As far as gameplay, I'd be shocked if they didn't tighten up that triforce hunt, or add a new dungeon or two. They've specifically mentioned those problems in the past. It'd take some more tweaking, but I also think it'd be a good call to condense the overworld a little. Nothing drastic, but they could stand to cut out some of the distractions between islands and just make everything a little closer together. Some kind of quicker stop mechanism for the boat might come in handy, again, nothing drastic. I often found myself repositioning over those treasure glow spots because I sailed just a little too far.

...but Kondo had pretty much no involvement with the Wind Waker soundtrack aside from a few tracks. The majority of the soundtrack was by Nagata and Toru Minegishi. Why would Kondo's say decide on anything, especially after the orchestral soundtracks of SMG and Skyward Sword?

This would be more representative of the current product

Hopefully not the final product

ok this is getting retarded, the screenshots look nothing like this.

And more than bloom, I see a lot of fog, which is an odd choice but it does fit the ocean theme, if anyone cared to actually pay attention, the screenshots with characters have no fog at all and the bloom is minimal.

I absolutely love The Wind Waker, and this announcement pushed me over the edge into confirming my purchase of a Wii U (which I still probably won't get around to until 2014). The screenshots DO look a bit off, but I'm hoping more finishing touches will be added. Even if the graphics don't improve at all, and the extra dungeons aren't added, I'll still love the hell out of this.

Not that that excuses Nintendo taking shortcuts. I'm just used to it by now, so I've learned to keep my expectations in check

I would also declare this a 'disaster' - if by disaster I can say that:

The overall art style from which the entire game will be based is terrible, and the art style is something I stare at for the duration - it does ruin the game for me.

I don't need in-game footage. Being a remake I've played it many times (once in HD already). I have an informed opinion.

This looks awesome.

i think people are confusing the souped up Dolphin screens and videos of WW over the regular GC version.

People just generally seem to forget how older games look.

Hopefully they add more stuff to it tho...just HD graphics isn't too great.
