Destructoid: PS4 controller prototype & devkit photo, [Up: New Photo/Info In OP]

I think this may very well be a pretty old prototype, that's why they're leaking it, or the consequences would never be the same. If this is the real deal Sony are showing the 20th, there must be a few very mad executives right now.

Supposedly these were 'delivered 2 weeks ago' but that doesn't mean much if it's still just a prototype.

Approximately how big should the touchpad on this thing be? It seems a bit too small to me in the devkit pics.

Man, I cannot wait to see it in action

From a design aspect, absolutely colors can be dated. It's just a silly personal preference of mine though, so I can see why you wouldn't matter to most people. I look at those colors and think, "Gross."

Happens all the time. In the 70s people had avocado green kitchen appliances.

It is your - or general - associations that make something seem dated. I can understand how in a persons eye's, a colour could be associated with a certain time, like avocado green kitchens (really? I'm glad I was not alive then)

To say a colour is dated though is like me saying that the number 7 is old school.

The number 14 is so 1940's.

If you see what I mean. :)

Absolutely not. Black and silver oscillate between "cool" colours for TVs. If you weren't around for 2002 you might not understand but its just the way it is.

Just copy the 360 controller and be done with it, hands down the most comfortable controller I've ever used. Too much pride Sony, too much pride getting in the way of what works best.

I agree it's a perception thing. I said as much in my comment. But to me and most of the world, colors do go in and out of style or have certain things or styles associated with them. Do you think a hot pink bathroom is cool? 40 years ago, my grandparents certainly did.

Hah pride?

Maybe it stay the same because majority of the people like it that way?

what really bothers me about this is how focused on non-gaming it is.

Sensor (Move?) bar at the top, wii-mote fisher-price toy speaker in the middle, touch pad.

I thought PS4 was supposed to be hardcore?

PS. It's also hideous.

that's certainly an opinion. Dpad pales in comparison and face buttons are WHACK on the 360 controller. Analog placement is give or take. No biggie.

What works best for "you" doesnt work good for others. I prefer the DS over the 360 controller. when i play with the 360 i find i have horrible aim.

Same goes for computers. They were mostly white/beige until the turn of the century, and now those old machines look ugly as sin.

If it had a screen it would easily be $100 a controller...you know what happens to controllers? Well someone show me a controller theyve had for years that they havent mangle to some degree

My PS3 DS3 has been used and abused A LOT! And it still looks damn near new! And yes... I have even let my 10 month old play with it. Still looks new. Not a problem if you ask me. And a $100 controller with the touchscreen as shown in that GIF is OK with me. In fact... I'd probably buy TWO day 1!

In some of the posts in this thread I read thoughts that it contains a speaker grill. I dont understand why would you want a speaker in a controller. Is another possibility that it is a microphone.

Its a long thread to check if someone suggested this.

Neither controller is perfect, although my ideal controller would be closer to this DS4 one. I prefer the DS3's stick placement, facebuttons/dpad (although the Vita pad seemingly used here is much better than both), I prefer the 360 pad's shape, material, and triggers (not L1/R1 to LB/RB though).

it's actually pretty cool on the wiimotes, so i wouldn't mind a speaker at all. for multiplayer, it's cool to have things that only affect you come out of the controller.

i'm hoping it is both a microphone and speaker.

haha, no. I do not think a hot pink bathroom it cool.

I wouldn't say a hot pink bathroom was dated though.

I guess all I was trying to say is that colours can't be dated, because anyone can take one and make it 'popular' again, make it 'current' again, because it's percepetion, which you agree.

The PS colours are better than just white. There is the posibility of four different peoples favorite colours being on the one pad :D

Yeah I dunno, everyone has their own personal preferences and judging by how little the dualshock has been changed over the years means that it works. People didn't complain about it (at least in a large amount) until the 360 pad came out and became a direct competitor, and even still - to each their own. I love the layout of the dualshock and if the final product is anything like this prototype I'll be really happy.

I think the proto controller is much more 'leakable' (yeah, not a real word, but you get the picture) and might even be a planned leak by Sony to build even more conversation & awareness towards the 20th.

The console design, however, is likely locked down tight.
If somehow that leaked between now and Wed., I bet there'd be quite a few red-asses at Sony.

The handles seems a bit longer than of the DS3, am I right?

And triggers similar to the ones on the 360 controller + a bigger Vita D-Pad? Sweet!

If the analog sticks feels not too loose this time than we have the perfect gaming controller.

I hope the final version looks a bit sexier than that. At this point, it looks like a cheap 3rd party accessory to me. I think the microphone makes it look a bit cheap. They need to do something about it.

I used to hate the PS analogs. It was like they took an existing controller and just slapped analog sticks at the bottom (they did) and then never changed it because, hey, people use it so fuck it. But that was so damn long ago that it's just not an issue any more and this new controller looks boss. It may just be an angle thing but the first pic looked chunkier. I'd rather that but if not that's cool too. I'm just ready to see the games for this thing! After 7 years it's going to be insane.

Few things I'm worried about:

Battery life. With the move sensor and the touch display, I hope I won't have to charge the controller every few hours.

Move sensor. You better be able to turn off that blue light. The blinking battery warning on the 360 controllers drove me mad.

Stick texture. I have never had a problem with grip on the PS3 sticks. Why change it?

So what if the ps4 launches with the google play store and that's where the touchpad comes into play (to play angry birds for example). Would kill the Ouya before it gets to pick up steam.

How does any of that make it less hardcore again?

Wow, this vita d-pad is that amazing? Never held one, so I couldn't say, but I'm glad to hear that!

I haven't really used the Vita d-pad too much, but in my opinion it's one of the best d-pads I've had the pleasure of using. The new controller having a similar d-pad makes me extremely happy.

This new controller honestly could become my favorite one ever, the way it's shaping out. :D

No have been suggested, neither confirmed

Speaker has examples from Wii and wiiU, and it is the right size for a speaker (microphones are often tiny holes these days)

On the flip side, th mic might need to be larger to allow for using it at arms length.

Basically we don't know. Just like we don't know whether the headphone socket supports headsets (but I think we'd assume it does)
