The problem with believing a late June release date is that it makes little sense from a marketing stand point. Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix was announced at TGS with a trailer, a full 6 months before it's due out in Japan. It was just announced for US release, planned for Fall, which is 6 months or more away.

I just can't see S-E unveiling FFX HD only 3 months before release. It's more believable if they unveil it at E3 (June) and announce a Dec 2013 release date, if you ask me.

This KHHD promotional schedule has less than 3 months of marketing before launch.

Honestly I know everyone differ in opinion, but for some reason I can't take this one seriously, lol. Don't make me start posting amazing FFX tracks because FFXII will lose that battle easily.

Almost nothing in FFXII was that memorable and it wasn't melodic at all. Much different style of music.


1) A serious problem with FFXII's soundtrack is how terribly compressed it was on the PS2 disc. When I first bought the OST, I remember thinking that some of the tracks sounded so different from what I heard in game that they almost felt like arranged versions. Moreso than any other FF soundtrack, I really think that FFXII's music demands a higher bitrate transfer to really emphasize it's strengths.

2) Also, FFXII's enormous play areas don't really do the soundtrack justice, in traditional FF fashion. After listening to the same song for 30+ minutes even the most memorable tracks would get boring and repetitive. I love To the End of the Abyss , but there's no way in hell I want to listen to it for 45 minutes. FFXII's tracks were designed to be better suited for that kind of repetition, but it unfortunately came at the cost of not being as instantly memorable as Uematsu's work. That shouldn't be a slight against the quality of the music though, it's just an unfortunate circumstance of that kind of game design.

However, despite all of that, there are more than a few beautiful sounding pieces that I'd be more than happy to stack up against anything in FFX.

What's weird to me is how much I enjoyed the compressed speech. Well, maybe not enjoyed...but something about the compressed speech actually resonated with me.

Tīda is one of the first words you'll learn if you take up the study of Okinawan (aka Ryukyuan or Luchuan). This is from Basil Chamberlain's pioneering textbook of 1895, based on his 1893 visit. At that time the neighboring Japanese had barely attempted to understand this language:



It's an interesting word: since Japanese and Okinawan families are estimated to have split from each other about 2000 years ago, in many cases Okinawan words corresond regularly to Japanese words, but some don't, and tida might be one of them, and might not. It doesn't fit with Japanese taiyō 太陽, which means 'sun', but might fit with tera-su 照らす "to illuminate".

There's a whole family of languages in the Okinawan islands, and some of them have slightly different words for "the sun". Up in the norther part of the main Okinawan island, it's tirā (which helps make the case for the terasu explanation above), and down in the southwest, where I've spent a lot of time, it's tidán, which is what I called him when I played FFX.

The fact that in most European languages, names that end in -a are usually feminine really makes Tida a difficult name; I don't have a problem with them masculinizing into Tidus.

It was announced at TGS with a trailer, and featured in all major publications that month. There were further marketing efforts between that and Jump Festa in December as well. The schedule you are citing only covers the more intensive full marketing period from December onwards. :p

Right now FFX hasn't even been formally unveiled. We know it exists, but beyond that there are no real details, no trailer, and zero magazine previews. It's not coming out in June. :p

Yeah June seems definitely too early for a release but with the incoming next-gen you never know. All I can say is that, judging from the VITA's video, this is definitely going to be a full remake and not just an HD remaster. I can't wait.

Sure. Nintendo did that a lot for some of their DS games in Japan too. But it's just highly unusual that a rather high profile game from a big publisher would be done that way. Especially when it has been teased time and time again without being shown in a proper way. If this were coming out in June, they would definitely have announced it officially at the Vita presentation when they announced the price drop.

Almost forgot: Tidus has to be related to the sun, because his best weapon requires the Sun Crest (not sure of the English name). Wakka, whose name means 'water' in Ainu, has a crest related to Mercury, which is the 'water planet' in Japanese. If they've both got water-related names, it doesn't quite work as well.
 
I really, really hope we get some meaty info and footage on this at E3 along with a sooner rather than later release date. I need Macalania Forest in HD.

That's the thing it needs most? I think that's fairly minor. They let you name him, so they couldn't say his name. It's not that big of a deal, and it actually works fine in Japanese. Redoing it for the English version would mean redoing all kinds of voice recording too (although I know we're all hoping they do that).

I remember when FFX came out, I had just had my first kid and this game almost got me a divorce. I loved every minute of it, except perhaps the Blittzball which i never quite got the hang of playing.

I just think its extremely awkward and makes a lot of dialogue seem unnatural.

As much as I love FFX-2, and I love me some X-2! If Square re-masters X-2 and I not FF12 international, I will rage so fucking hard.
Consider that FF10-2 uses the same game engine and a lot of the same assets as FF10. It doesn't make sense to not do it, really.

i don't understand why they don't record dialogue that mentions tidus' name if you name him tidus, and then have a second set of dialogue that works like it does currently. why wasn't this done? it's not like they would call him by name that much in the game that they couldn't have two different sentences programmed.

Forgotten, I didn't really understand it is all.

OT - PS3 will end up with quite a decent catalogue of Final Fantasy games (at least volume wise) by the end of it's lifecycle. I remember when people were saying we would be lucky if we even got XIII before PS4 launched.

Now we have - FFXIII, FFXIII-2
Launching this year - FFX / X2 HD, FFXIII: LR, FFXIV
Launching whenever - FF Versus XIII

Very decent collection all said and done.

I mentioned this earlier, but I should be honest and say that I only made it 20 hours into FFXII so obviously there was a lot of music I missed. From my experience hearing all the compositions, that was the basis for the comments I made. It just didn't impress me at all other than a couple of pieces including the main boss battle which is just great.

I'm going to listen to the ones you've posted since I'm at working and I feel like listening to something at the same time.

Again, not only is it great music, but the music matched up the gameplay situation/cut scene perfectly and the individuals tracks to me were unique. I feel that this really enhanced the game in a way that FFXII's music didn't for the gameplay. The unfortunate part is that people who haven't played FFX will not understand what I mean so hearing the music probably won't have as strong as an effect. People like to mention how good the piano tracks were for FFX, but in my eyes, that's just scratching the surface.

Here are some of the many of the tracks that contribute to making FFX's soundtrack so brilliant (there was not one bad piece of music in this game, IMO):

I agree, GILGAMESH! with FFX art style as a boss would be fun. and he gives you a rare weapon or armor.

I only mentioned it so it would coincide with the Ultimania Omega description of the Muramasa. Which he supposedly found in the Ruins.

Genji Armor drops are a must. New design would be great as well.

You don't understand why they didn't want to have a bunch of additional recorded dialogue? Really?

Besides, we wouldn't be able to argue about whether to pronounce the name like you would in Japanese or the way practically every westerner does.

At first I was just like "oh great, can they just place get this over with already so the can start on FFXII IZJS HD?", but now that I think if they may pack it with X-2, this just may be worth a digital purchase of around 5-10$.

What's to argue? Wakka vocally said "Teedus" in the English version of Kingdom Hearts mere months after FFX came out.

Oh this argument again. Isn't it official that his name's pronounce Tee-dus? I mean look at Dissidia, Kingdom Hearts etc... If Square want us to pronounce Tie-dus, we would know by now.

The way Tidus' name should be pronounced would be to pronounce the 'Tid' similar to the word 'Tida' in Japanese+how you would prononuce 'us' after a d or at the end of a word.

Tida is a Japanese word right?

It's an Okinawan word, but one that's basic enough that some Japanese speakers know it. There's a car model named Tida with the same origin.
