I will never buy a non expandable 16gb device ever again. 32gb is my minimum. My iPad 2 is already full, hate having to remove and add stuff.
I'll delete this post if no one cares, but I'd thought I'd give if one more chance here. Was wondering if anyone wanted to trade their iPad 3 for a black 16gb mini. Once again ill delete this post immediately if its unsuitable.
I liked the mini, but I need the larger screen for large PDFs for the semester.

There are some good ones for the iPhone, like Weather Dial
But nothing for the iPad, that comes remotely close to it. All you get is the same standard blown up iOS interface with a Windows XP style sunny grass hill background.
It's infuriating.
And why is the Uniqlo Calendar the best thing ever? If I were in the position to buy an iPad like it was nothing, I'd get one just for the calendar.

I've always liked Weather Station Pro. It's just simple, and has been out since the launch of the iPad 1 back in April 2010. I bought it on launch day and haven't found a decent replacement since, minimalist-wise.

I've always liked weather dial, but feel that an extra weather app seems redundant.
Edit: I just bought weather dial (it has sunrise and sunset times and my favourite app for that, Darkness, hasn't even been updated for retina).
Eh. I think it's a little over-designed. The wobbles and sounds are a bit much. But it does look nice and is simple. Still great.
Edit2: on closer inspection, the iPhone 5 update to weather dial is a little lazy. Can't really ask too much, but the positioning of the elements are now a little 'off'. The big blank space at the bottom makes everything skewed upwards. It's nice that it has controls behind it, but it does look weird. That combined with the separator between that section and the main pane having rounded corners very much makes it look like the old 3:2 app shifted up and the space below filled.
Also the tap to change display doesn't jive with the skeumorphism design of the rest of the app.
I think it's probably caching the photos from your iCloud Photo Stream

I would assume the ipad creates thumbnails and multiple sizes for faster viewing, but while I've seen those take up quite a bit of space, I wouldn't say it takes more than double.
Are you sure there aren't more photos and files stored in the camera roll section, or have been otherwise imported not synced?
I couldn't find something on Google that helped, so I'll ask here: My Ipad 3 is sucking an insane amount of power in sleep mode. Started about a month ago. Fully charged two days ago, now it is almost completly discharged without me using it even once.
Wlan is on, but it sucks battery when it sleeps with Wlan off as well, there are no new apps installed compared to when it worked, it doesn't matter whether the cover sends it into into sleep mode or I press the switch. I have very few apps installed, anyway. I completely turned it off several times already. It doesn't use more power when I use it, I think, maybe 3% for an episode of American Dad with headphones and several hours of surfing per charge. It is jailbroken, but outside of ifile I have no hackstore apps.
I have to say that a few months ago there was an incident where a broken egg got the charge area dirty and spread behind the plastic case. The speakers stopped working outside of those chirps and clicks, so no sound for vids but system noises. That went away on its own, though. I'm not sure when it came back and if it was around the time the sleep mode stated fucking up, since I had turned the volume down outside of headphones.

I've heard about wifi issues with Apple products before but I haven't ever actually experienced any until this week and my fucking god it's annoying. Not a software update, haven't done one for a while and not my router because I can load up the same web page on another device while the iPad tells me it can't connect to the Internet. Sometime it won't do it for a few hours but sometimes it does it every 5 mins (like right now!). It's just happened while I'm writing this post so I'll have to jump over to settings and reconnect. Tried messing with a bunch of stuff in network settings but to know avail. Will be glad to get rid of this iPad 2 when the new mini comes out.
How do you know it's not the router?
Some of my devices crap out all the time due to my router, because it can cross the IP addresses assigned. Some devices will continue to work, but others won't.
Sure, it might be because the way a particular devices uses wifi, thus its kind of unique to that device, but that doesn't rule out the router being to blame.
Another example is that certain services don't work on my devices, because my router fails to parse certain DNS requests it seems, as the issue is resolved by inputting in DNS addresses to each device and offloading the burden from the router.
It can be very easy to blame some devices.
Networking is simply a bitch, and it's very hard to tell what devices are really the issue, since it's multiple devices talking to each other: internet -> server-> ISP -> exchange->modem -> router -> device. and back again if you have another device talking to it!
Yeah, mrkgoo is right. Networking can be a pain in the ass to troubleshoot, so it's always a good idea to cover all your bases. Do any software updates for the device, do any firmware upgrades for the router, cycle them all, check IP addresses, etc.
Just picked up one of these. 16GB White Wifi model mainly for games.
I went with the 16GB because I plan on storing only apps on it and all media will be streamed from (not stored on) the device.
A few points coming from someone who had an iPhone 3GS and 4 but then moved away from iOS:
I don't like Safari (don't hate it, either). I don't like Siri. I don't like the new Maps. I didn't expect to like any of those. I'll continue using safari and will give siri a few more chances before the week is out and then reassess it.
The on screen keyboard is phenomenal. Much better than the keyboard on the iPhone. Holy shit. The extra screen space really works wonders, here.
The screen looks nice.
The OS is more complicated than I remember. I think I prefer the iPhone menu systems since I remember them being more uniform throughout the various apple apps.
I love the speaker placement. Works well from both orientations. Works well when laid out flat on a surface. Good design all around.
This thing is fucking H U G E. Damn, man.
They really still won't let me delete this newstand shit, will they?
Battery life seems good so far. I guess it's too early to say right now.

So when the next iPad comes out I'm thinking of getting a cellular one. I'm currently an AT&T iPhone subscriber with the unlimited data plan grandfathered in. Are my only options:
A) Purchase a cellular iPad and one of the associated data plans. Being an existing AT&T customer doesn't seem to matter in any way from what I can tell on their website; it's an entirely separate data plan.
B) Discard my iPhone unlimited data plan in lieu of one of the tiered plans (and save $5), then pay $20 to be able to tether an iPad to my iPhone, and save the cost of buying a cellular iPad over a WiFi only one.
Are there any other hidden options out there for me?

I wouldn't want to go the mobile hotspot route since I'm not fond of carrying another device around. Aren't tethering apps immediately detectable by your service provider since they'll see all the Internet traffic with tons of requests for non-mobile page versions? I still have that Handylight tether app from back in the day installed, but don't use it since I've heard you'll pretty much immediately get a warning text from AT&T about unauthorized tethering use.
Depends if you abuse it.
I use MyWi on my iphone 5 (unlimited data) to tether to my mini from time to time and havent had a problem. Granted, Ive never went higher than 2gb of data.

I think it more depends on what you tether to it. If you tether a windows laptop it's really easy to detect when there's traffic to windows update servers etc. But I've used it to tether my iPad 2 and 3 without any issue. A couple months I was going really heavy with Netflix on my iPad while at work (and tethering to my iPhone 4) and never got any notification.
A mobile hotspot is nice because it's forward compatible. You won't need to worry about getting the +$130 cellular version of the next iPad each time you upgrade. If you've got a bag for the iPad it's a no brainer to just keep the mobile hotspot in there.
That said, even if you opt to buy a cellular iPad each time you upgrade, if you're selling your old devices when you upgrade, you'll be able to sell it for a little more, making the $130 hit each time a bit smaller.
For what it's worth, with the iPhone 5 I switched over to the official tethering service, and it's quite a bit more flaky than MyWi from Cydia. Maybe 1 in 10 times it fails to connect via bluetooth, and for whatever reason trying to use wifi almost never works. I've had far fewer problems with MyWi.

You can't share like on Verizon? I pay $10 a month and the iPad shares the data pool from my phone(I have 6GB). This is saving me money over using a separate iPad plan, and I don't have to turn on tethering every time I want to use it.

How do mini users feel about downloading HD media? Is there a clear difference in perceivable image quality between HD/SD on the mini? This is in regards to shows and movies (mostly downloaded from iTunes). Thanks!

I think you can, but that's an entirely different type of data plan than what you would have normally with just a single phone data plan.
Content providers whining and crying. Even third party apps like Jasmine are being limited because of that.

Checking the daily weather. You're bound to head outside at some point in either the day or the week.

But you can surmise from the season, and from the appearance of the sky outside the window, what type of weather it'll be. Unless, of course, you live in an area where the weather changes sporadically over the day
I take it you've never lived adjacent to a body of water.
There's also temperatures you need to account for, as well. Though, by your line of thinking, stepping outside for a second also works just fine.
At this point, it's just a personal thing to need to know the details of the weather outside.
Yup. In Texas it could be 20 degrees colder from one day to the next.
At 7am this morning it was 52. In another hour it will be 72.

Purchased my first iPad 4 32g. Well ordered it from apple anyway along with the Red Smart Case and an SFbags exosleeve case. I was debating between a mini and 4 for a while now and the geek in me would rather have the extra power/retina over the smaller form factor. I will pick up a mini if and when it ever gets a retina display thats for sure. Thanks for the folks in this thread and the mini thread for helping me come to a decision.

Typing this from my new white 32gb iPad and is fucking AMAZING. So glad I chose this over the mini since the retina is insanely gorgeous. I went with the red smart case and its pretty damn slick and does its job quite well. I can't believe it took me this long to find out how great a tablet would be. 10 out of fucking 10!

I've just sold my Nexus 7 for an iPad 4. So far I love it except for:
- Not being able to chose que quality in YouTube.
- Google Maps not available for iPad.
- Can't chose an app to open when clicking on a wiki link and such.
If those are corrected, I will be really happy.
