Bioshock "Exclusive Review" IGN edition - A lot of annoyed journos (Ironcreed wow).

Its kinda obvious they are just pissed not because of any moral or ethical issue, its just about losing revenue from a competitor breaking the story early.

It just shows what a charade it all is. When every review is an income opportunity any chance of impartiality and integrity goes out the window.

Yeah, in between these two posts this thread is already on a roll. Well done GAF.

It doesn't matter. You're all missing the point. This is a high profile game and it will average an 8.5-10 from almost every big site/publication because of that. The gaming industry doesn't operate like other industries where a product is reviewed. Those other people aren't pissed because of the lack of integrity, they're pissed that they can't exclusively award the game the same exact score IGN is going to first.

This is pretty much it.

And yeah, Geis complaining about it is fucking rich considering he has been running PR for EA all week long.

Yeah I really think it's time for game reviews to just go extinct. I don't think they even cater to the lowest common denominator anymore...their words hold absolutely zero merit.

To be clear, I don't think we should give IGN the free pass just because Gies is insanely hypocrytical.

Exclusive reviews are bullshit.

Perhaps maybe it's not that there is this influx of "rich" comments. Perhaps you are simply wrong about some of them?

Nope. This is the second time in as many weeks that Sessler has completely overreacted to something for completely wrong reasons. First the God of War trophy (that he completely didn't understand) and now this (they're all mad that they didn't get an exclusive review and they're all fucking liars if they claim they wouldn't accept one).

Just read the snippet, looks like McFanboy will shrug off the serious console issues as "eh, just play it on PC" and slap a nice 9.8 on that sucker.

This is going to be fun.

Why would anyone give Polygon an exclusive review when the score can go down?

Haha, so true. And this:

haha I'm surprised more of you guys aren't upset about this. Exclusive reviews help two groups of people: publishers and the outlets that run them. The one group they don't help is the group we're here to serve: readers. It's super gross.

They are just upset cause this will take alot of traffic away from them. I find that alot of people don't care who or what it is, if they can see a game early on streams, read the first review, etc... they will flock to it. Just goes to show it's not so much about the magazine, the youtuber, the online website... people just want to see the new games asap! A week later and no one gives a shit.

To be fair, the Polygon SimCity review was written by Russ Pitts, not Gies.
Arthur is the reviews editor, everything Polygon publishes is directly on him, just like every other publication. He could send publisher fellating reviews back to the reviewer and he publishes them anyway.

Gies is making it way too easy at this point.

Haven't read the whole thread yet, but exclusives aren't really anything new, are they? I think most of GAF agrees with you, it's just been talked through so many times by now.

Gaf is showing the same lack of empathy to journalists that they show to gamers.

Arthur Gies made an internet post so who gives a fuck? We won't stop until he steps down.

Did you just want to give yourself a high five? What does that post have to do with integrity?

Dictionary said:
in·teg·ri·ty
/inˈtegritē/
Noun

The quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness.

Making a bet, then refusing to pay up when you lose, is the actual opposite of integrity.

I think we are all upset, the only thing is, the problem is nobody believes that any of the people complaining would say no to it. It is sad when something this fucked up can get side tracked by the fact that the perception is every-single-outlet would say yes to this.

Whether you guys wouldn't do it, is besides the point.

The irony is too rich to not poke fun at.

Well, I agree, but I think it could had probably helped if the tone of the thread title was not other: LOLJournos...

Of course it's bad, but no one trusts gieis or keighley or ign anyway. So it's just confirmed what we already knew.

It is a pretty shitty situation given that the vast majority of games journalism only stays alive due to advertising revenues and this is going to drive down views for almost everyone on what should've been the biggest game of the quarter. At the same time, I'm pretty over faulting IGN for being IGN. There's only so many times you can say the same thing about an outlet. I will say that this is a shitty thing for the publisher to allow.

oh, we hate and mock exclusive reviews

it's just that, you know, the publishers and outlets are running a business you know, and businesses have to make money, and vocal minorities on The Internet™ aren't very effective and all

(this is pure schadenfreude for us)

"But *I* wanted to get paid by 2K to write a 10/10 review before the embargo!"

J. JONAH JAMES JOURNALISM! I was not inclined to put much stock in reviews of this game before, but now I'm not believing a single word from any of them, ever. The checks are already in the Goddamn mail.

We've complained about exclusive reviews for years on here to the point where every time one comes out for a game we have seemingly half the board go "oh boy a 9 for the exclusive review I'm shocked" and just totally disregard it until the regular embargo drops.

This thread is more about the audacity of some of the people listed in the OP calling IGN out for this. Some of them with very recent controversies of their own, and that's not even mentioning the fact that just about all of their companies would instantly grab an exclusive review of a game of this caliber if they had the chance. It's one of the biggest hyped games of the year after all.

Oh I don't think you'll find anyone who disagrees that it's a disgusting thing. Hell review embargoes in general are a scummy practice. However what is hilarious about the whole thing is that you have people who do the very same thing and shit all over the consumers for feeling entitled actually feeling entitled and bitching about it.

So it's the whole irony of the situation that most everyone here is making fun of.

I agree that its gross but so are some of those tweets; not about servicing readers at all.
I like the idea of a early 'how does this game run'; but yeah exclusive reviews aren't good for anyone. This is IGN though; its sort of their corner and I don't think it stinks so badly that I'll hurtle stones at them but then neither will I take the review all that seriously.

Its just ridiculous that these characters only chime in when its basically business competition their complaining about. They even say as much - plain and simple.

A couple of sentences can sum up a game review by telling us about the technical aspects, gameplay, and graphics. I don't mind scores because it gives me an indication of the game, but there is no need for bullshit personal opinions and their personal experiences mudding up a game for someone. Recently, that GOW trails thing and Sim City exposed reviewers for me.
