Bioshock "Exclusive Review" IGN edition - A lot of annoyed journos (Ironcreed wow).

haha I'm surprised more of you guys aren't upset about this. Exclusive reviews help two groups of people: publishers and the outlets that run them. The one group they don't help is the group we're here to serve: readers. It's super gross.

People are upset. They just like to point out the irony of the situation at this moment.

We've complained about exclusive reviews for years on here to the point where every time one comes out for a game we have seemingly half the board go "oh boy a 9 for the exclusive review I'm shocked" and just totally disregard it until the regular embargo drops.

This thread is more about the audacity of some of the people listed in the OP calling IGN out for this. Some of them with very recent controversies of their own, and that's not even mentioning the fact that just about all of their companies would instantly grab an exclusive review of a game of this caliber if they had the chance. It's one of the biggest hyped games of the year after all.

As soon as they get their milk taken away, they are suddenly the "entitled ones".

It's the Mass Effect 3 ending all over again!

Do you think Kotaku would have said no to an exclusive Bioshock review?
I mean, it does seem pretty tempting.

Making a bet, then refusing to pay up when you lose, is the actual opposite of integrity.
Read the thread.

That wasn't apparent from the single post he presented and I'm not reading through that huge thread to find out if he ever paid. If you're going to show a post as an example of a lack of integrity, you should show the part that actually shows what you're claiming.

We get early reviews. So it helps te readers. Unless you want to imply that IGN is going to give this game a higher score because of exclusivity. I know you wouldn't because you yourself says there is no conspiracy among the reviewers and publishers to game us out of $60.

Nailed it.

None of us like exclusive reviews. They are almost always misleading and overly positive.

It seemed to have been fine for others, so if you couldn't take the minute to read his response posted shortly thereafter, so be it.

A couple of sentences can sum up a game review by telling us about the technical aspects, gameplay, and graphics. I don't mind scores because it gives me an indication of the game, but there is no need for bullshit personal opinions and their personal experiences mudding up a game for someone. Recently, that GOW trails thing and Sim City exposed reviewers for me.

....

Wah?

How would Polygon have been perceived if they gave Sim City a 9 or whatever and stuck to it? I think it shows more integrity to bite the bullet and reduce your score...like Edge when they gave GTA on PS2 a 6 and changed it to a 9. It's a mistake and they rectified it.

The people with the least integrity are the first in line to slag someone off.

Two separate issues.

Issue 1: exclusive reviews good/bad (bad)

Issue 2: people who have lately gone out of their way to say that gamers should stop complaining about business models are now complaining about business models. The point being that business models are fair game for criticism and complaint at all times, regardless of whether it affects you or not.

tl;dr - every game site that has an article on their site telling gamers to stop whining about online DRM, microtransactions, and the like are going to get a deaf ear from me when asking my support for their crusade against exclusive reviews.

He replied a couple of posts later, saying he wasn't going to pay up.

Forums, how do they work?

Would you have rejected an early Bioshock Infinite review if it had been offered?

Did you reject a chance to post an early review?

Let's not get this twisted, we all have issues with things like this. But we are told repeatedly there's no major impropriety at all going on between gaming sites and publishers.

When we have more tangible evidence, be it free flight/games/consoles, we're repeatedly told that journalists are able to maintain their integrity.

Is the only issue the fact IGN were picked over them or is there a hint that IGN did something untoward to secure it.

For customers who actually read reviews, yes, having access to a review days before release is serving them. It's not like the rest of the non exclusive reviews are an amazing source of honesty. They're all going to rate the game much higher than it should be, because the majority of them are on the pr's books whether its actual payola, or free games.

Why would anyone trust an "exclusive review"? It's hard enough for me to trust any review from a major outlet as it is. Exclusive review to me now just borderlines on an oxymoron. Might as well blatantly say "promotional review".

Yeah if someone snags the exclusive GTA 5 review we may have to actually fear for the reviewer's life. Everyone else wants to be the first one to come up with new hyperbolic positive phrases to convey how life changing this new massively hyped game is.

It'll earn two Oscars this time.

I just had the worst bowel movement ever. Constipated and diarrhea at the same time. What was in that toilet bowl is what I think of the state of game journalism at the moment.

funny how the things that concern game journalists don't always line up with what concerns the consumer.

Behind The Games
Do you think Kotaku would have said no to an exclusive Bioshock review?
I mean, it does seem pretty tempting.

Tempting indeed! But I'm pretty sure I'd say no. I've never written or published an exclusive review, but I'd guess that I'd feel pressure to tilt positive. An exclusive review is going to be a pre-release review, and I already publish those with some reluctance. It's hard to assess multiplayer games prior to their release (which is why we often don't and update the mp part of a review after the game is in the wild). But even reviews of single-player games, I've seen, generate more interest when people have a chance to compare those reviews with the game they've played or heard about others playing.

In general, I prefer exclusives of our own making.

Why would anyone give Polygon an exclusive review when the score can go down?
Because it doesn't matter at all if it goes down or not after it was originally published. The only score that counts for Metacritic is the first one, and that's the site publishers use to gauge their games' reception.

That's why what Polygon did with SimCity's score was nothing but a charade. They had already blown it with the early review.

Yeah but at least you feel better after finishing a bowel movement, unlike reading game journalists like those in the OP
