Putting the Ly into Polygon, Crecente: "Oh, that I saw"

So wait, not only did Crecente published a very similar article using the same source Walker did (after Gies dismissed it) he then claimed ignorance about having read it, after tweeting a fucking link to it not 2 days ago?

What the fucking fuck.

Is particular confusing as, like Gies, I too spend my time writing and publishing critique on video games. I mean...he writes for Polygon. He writes reviews. He spends hours playing games, then hours penning reports that aim to analyse the components of said game and argue why they do/don't work. His career at Polygon is doing exactly what he's complaining about: telling people how to make better games.

I don't think there's anything wrong with that, it's just a baffling thing to complain about. Any time he's ever written that he didn't like a certain aspect of a video game he's suggesting it could be better, and implying he possess the knowledge to know what constitutes as "better". A statement like this is bonafide shitting where you eat.

I am sort of a bit confused as to whats going on now. Are polygon saying their article is completely new or what?

Its days like this I wish I miss the old 1UP.com :(

I don't understand why everyone was implicating Polygon in this entire debacle in the first place when it pretty much just was eagies not knowing when to stop.
I don't think that's Arthur Gies's name up there next to the premature pre-release review for SimCity on Polygon.

Things that should happen to Arthur Gies:

What the fuck, dude.

A) That's really dumb and disgusting.
B) No seriously
C) No I don't care if it was "ironic"
D) It just gives him something to paint all of NeoGAF with
E) No fucking seriously don't joke about rape or disabilities or mental impairment

My goodness, such buffoonery. Unfortunately, the seething mass of piss that forms most of the modern gaming media will circle the wagons on this shit while industry insiders cheer these Polygon clowns for "standing up for principles" or some such bollocks.

Is that what this Crecente guy actually looks like? He looks like a pretentious dick. He should be thrown to the wolves just for that.

.

But judging people based on their looks isn't pretentious at all.

Someone should be thrown to the wolves...not sure if it's him though.

Anyway...Polygon thread. ::gets pitchfork::

"I'd like to see you do better" is the weakest argument for anything ever. No I don't have the capacity to make a AAA videogame but that doesn't mean I can't say things that I think are bad about a game.

This forum's obsession with Polygon/Gies is becoming as ugly as anything they've done.

edit: I said that before Foliorum's post, too. Jeez. Way to take it over the top, buddy.

Yeah, that doesn't quite make sense. A critics job is to be critical, not hold back because they couldn't create a better product themselves.

Just proves Mik was right all along.

I use to like Gies, but now I can't stand anything he writes or does. I don't even go to Polygon anymore. They don't get my clicks.

Right, but it's exceptionally weak coming from someone who dedicates time to doing just this. He's a "video game journalist" who writes reviews. His career is telling people they could do better!

Brian Crecente cracks me up. When he was at Kotaku and they had the MW3 leak, he was insanely butt hurt when told by Infinity Ward that they had published a bunch of false information.

Still waiting for those Team Perks and Kremlin missions, Brian.

I don't think that Gies is saying that people can't criticise games, just that they shouldn't play 'backseat game designer'. I assume that for Geis 'the gunplay in Bioshock is lacklustre' would be an acceptable thing to say but 'they should have put ironsights in Bioshock' would not.

It's basically the distinction made in the OP in this thread:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=518649

That being said, personally, I don't have a problem with 'backseat game designing'.

There's a difference between "this works, this doesn't work" and "they should have done X instead of Y and the only reason they didn't was because they're <lazy/greedy/stupid/hate you/miscellaneous other vitriol>."

Crecente's way of talking with Walker kinda makes me want to vomit. It's this form of politeness that you can't really get angry about without looking dumb, but at the same time it conveys the subtle message of "You just own a blog, you aren't in my league". Ugh.

Hmmm, I discovered Polygon recently and liked the layout.

This is a whole lot of nonsense. Hard to respect any of it really.

Is it like us plebs saying 'They should have had an offline mode in a game" and then someone maybe a games journo saying 'It's not possible'. Then being proven wrong?

I wonder where that fits in with all this.

"No, really, greeeeaaaattttt job. You're doing great work! I'm just gonna ctrl+c, then ctrl+v it, and not source you, but it was great!"
