Adam Orth no longer with Microsoft

Fantastical

Yeah clearly the more level headed thing to do is post meme pictures celebrating him being fired.

God damn, people have no sympathy.

Sorry, but when you insult 75% of your userbase, I can't feel sympathy for you. Dude basically nuked any hype MS had for it's next X-box at the moment unless MS comes out and outright says "no, the 720 isn't always-on. So you won't have to #dealwithit."

Hope he can still afford to pay the bills.

Would hate to see someone pull the electricity on him.

Then again, he and his vacuum are well prepared.

Jesus Christ. This guy needs to go next.

He is right where he belongs. I just wish people would stop giving him the attention he so highly craves. He is just a random blogger in the industry, well, that and a paid shill and big-company apologist.

I hope he doesn't have a family to take care of.

I have empathy for him; I can put myself in his shoes and imagine how fucked up the entire situation is from his point of view. But sympathy? I tend to reserve that for those deserving of it.

I already have very little patience as it is for Microsoft's hideous practices, so when one of their grunts comes out and so brazenly mocks and insults a whole swath of people while supporting damaging causes, I'm not going to feel a great amount of compassion.

Now that I think about it — part of this sucks because it was the internet, including GAF and Twitter, being a lynch mob.

But the other part of this has to do with how much his employer is able to withstand such a disaster, so Microsoft should share the blame too.

Pretty sad. Not saying he shouldn't have been more careful on his public Twitter account given his position but, when the comments are put in context, what he said was relatively harmless. It's just sad that the bloodthirsty internet mob can put a guy with a family out of a job for something so innocuous in the greater scheme of things and then declare victory as if they served some kind of justice.

Those responsible have been sacked.

edit: this hasn't been the internet or GAF's doing, this has been about a Creative Director at Microsoft talking about things he shouldn't have in a public venue and creating a negative narrative for his employer, at worst actively disrupting long-standing marketing plans and schedules that now have to be changed/revised.

The lesson learned here is to be aware what you are writing about on a public website if you have signed NDAs and are representing more than just yourself.

Best of luck for Adam to land on his feet again.

I feel bad the guy got fired, but as an employer I'm not sure why you'd keep him. He made a very public rant that caused potential harm to the company's brand. It's not surprising they let him go.

Agreed. The vindictiveness is a little gross.

Cold as ice.

Yeah no one should be celebrating him losing his job... but nor should we be getting on the bandwagon of "that poor guy". It's not your company's fault if you do something stupid that gets you fired. No one should have to tell him that even INSINUATED insults at your potential customers is a TERRIBLE idea.

As others have said, companies have PR departments for a reason...

A bloodythirsty Internet mob can strong-arm Microsoft? Would they not have acted upon reading his nonsense even if there wasn't a storm whipped up?

You mean pissy gamers.
Nah, clueless people who don't know when to keep their mouth shut. You CAN make anonymous accounts on twitter to spew your nonsense, but that wouldn't be as awesome as "Creative Director at Microsoft". Need those followers!

I hope MS learns something from this. The recent rumor article about always on being bull and that BC device is a step in the definitive right direction. MS has an empire, its been heartbreaking watching them fuck it all up. There is still time to make it right.

Also, goodbye to this asshat, i dont know if he was joking, but you dont joke like that when you are in that high a position. Dumbass.

It was a conscious decision Orth made. He screwed up, created a PR firestorm for his employer, and paid the price.

His fault that his life is "fucked up", as Mr. Gies claims. Lesson (hopefully) learned. Just because gaming press make their living on being controversial and being dismissive of their constituents doesn't mean that flies everywhere else.

I'd say I wish someone would fire gies over the stupid shit he says but saying stupid shit is apparently polygon's business model lol

This is why an always online twitter account is bad.

Twitter has always been a bloodbath, even when it's merely jest, why don't people learn from all the twitter stories in the news?

I came in this thread thinking "You guys should be ashamed" Then I leave laughing from the monster pic; I should be ashamed but I'm not..

What would he know about accountability, anyways.

Really, it's not that hard to not be an idiot on the internet. If you can't self-monitor or know when to stop, I don't think you should be able in power or someone of influence in a large corporation anyways. He should have known better, full stop.

Before we go too far down the road of blaming/congratulating the Internet for this it's worth noting that his leaving/termination may have had more to do with his discussing details of an unreleased product than his japes about cities. Even if the always online stuff turns out not to be true, commenting on an unreleased product in any way can easily get you fired. Especially when it's something as big as the next Xbox.

Don't act like a dumbass in a public forum? His employers actually care.

You know that's the truth too. If you're going to be an ass on the net where everyone can see it and it can be captured for an eternity, then you reap what you sow. It's just common sense. So many lack that too as shown yet again with this.

i don't get the point in blaming "the internet". dude was going to get sacked regardless.
