Well done Sony.

He's a double corporate agent and did his job too well so now he got fired and is going to run back to Sony with all the high-fives and pats-on-the-back he can get. :p

That thread was disgusting. People basically lynched him for absolutely nothing.

Giving yourself enough rope to hang with on the internet by acting like an elite condescending asshole to push anti-consumerist agenda will earn you that kind of revulsion.

Honestly, I would have taken an apology and acknowledgement over him getting fired.

Yeah. Unless he was an official spokesman I don't really see an issue with what was said. Of course with him being blunt about the MS plan I can see why this would happen. And if it wasn't MS could have cleared that up in their non apology and it would have been forgotten and everyone would have moved on.

You can direct your concerns to microsoft, the company responsible for his termination of contract.

It's remarkable how many people miss this point.

Do you guys literally think NeoGAF can fire people from their jobs? It's a yes or no question, open to anyone blaming "the internet."

You haven't fucked up since you were 10? You sound inhuman.

Social media and putting your words onto the internet is serious business when you are a public face for a company.

You better be very careful about what you say on the internet or you could lose your job. I thought this was like business basics 101.

agreed. basically every single game site and Reddit ran with the story.

I have no pity for people who act like dumbasses on Twitter when they clearly should know better.

You're representing your company so be prepared to suffer the consequences.

Businessmen, doctors, teachers, nurses, lawyers, and on and on. Really anyone who doesn't want to make a public record of their flaws takes a little bit more care with social media, because there are obvious consequences.

When an employee hops on an internet soapbox and flagrantly sabotages your company's message and its character in the eyes of your consumers, there's one appropriate course of action, and it was taken.

In what planet do people live on where publicly talking about unannounced products that billions are sunk into and insulting a large portion of your potential consumer base doesn't get you in serious trouble? That people seem insistent on blaming this on GAF and the Internet at large is mystifying.

That hurts my feelings. :(

A few years ago, before I had the opportunity to "upgrade" my career path, I worked at a call center. One of the many pieces of documentation I signed said that I can be terminated for making the company look bad, even on my own time. One of the examples given when someone brought it up in training was that you can be terminated for doing something "stupid" like getting in a drunken bar fight. If news of that fight made the paper or social media and blew up locally and that media just so happened to know where you worked, it doesn't make the company look too hot.

It's a more specific example, but it's still appropriate to what happened here. Orth, while representing the company, made disparaging remarks to potential future consumers about rumors said consumers have every right to be concerned about. Microsoft doesn't want anything to do with that, which is why they released a PR statement.

I'm sorry that my stance of "don't be stupid" offends you so much to the point of talking about my deliciously firm ass, but it's a general guideline that serves one pretty well in life.

Makes sense but I believe in second chances. I think there are other paths that could have been taken instead of termination. I think people are more forgiving than wanting a pound of flesh every single time they're slighted. Was this a royal fuck up? Yes. Do I think that they could have been able to do something other than fire the guy to placate the masses? Yes.

Ultimately I think it depends on whether you think it's worth the effort to do the damage control to placate the masses who want the guy's head.

very surprised that people are surprised that he got canned. do you guys just not work in professions where you have to actually be... you know professional when saying things about your employer/things related to your employment/stuff you are working on that's not yet officially announced/clients?

Sums it up nicely for me.

You "won" two victories today: apparently the bitching and crying for no easy mode for Dark Souls 2 paid off. Just had to have that your way. And now your day is ending celebrating someone's loss of job. Sad.

Holy shit, this is even bigger news to me than this poor sap losing his job. Where's the thread in question that discusses this specifically? (It's not the Dark Souls 2 video thread is it?)

Microsoft's product vision.
Adam Orth's twitter account and tweets.
Microsoft's employment contract with Orth. And decision to terminate.

The "internet" and "GAF" aren't at fault for drawing attention to someone's stupidity, nor accountable for the ramifications of that stupidity.

People sympathetic for Orth's stupidity should start a letter writing campaign to Microsoft or something.

Someone who professes to love always-online and espouses how awesome the internet is, should know better.

This. Cannot understand why anyone is defending the guy or surprised that he got canned.

This.

I'm seriously curious as to what would be the tipping point in favor of termination for some people.

For one breaking a NDA, intentionally or unintentionally, is grounds for immediate termination. Simply talking about always online in public should lead to termination for Orth, let alone insulting his customers.

Kamiya-san of course

Someone didn't get the joke lol. The comment was "do you eat shit?" in reply to whether he read a website. Implying the website was shit and he didn't want to "eat" or consume it.

But yes, he just told you to eat shit because those are the words in the sentence and you recognize them words.

Kamiya of Platinum Games/Capcom fame.

But most of GAF went wild over that because "OH THAT WACKY KAMIYA-SAN! SO PUNK-ROCK!"

Well, his 'eat-shit' is directed towards people who many in GAF felt deserving it, while the this dude's comment is directed towards the general consumer so.....?

Totally different scenario.

No, he did not.

He compared reading the misleading bullshit article that Kotaku manufactured from his twitter comments to eating shit.

Feel bad for him, but he brought it on himself. I don't think people should ever take satisfaction in this kind of thing. It's a pretty terrible thing to happen to anyone, even someone that messed up the way he did.

Fired.

GAF's fault.

Very very sad. He messed up, but I don't think he should've lost his job. People screw up, and I hate that some people will demand blood.

We live in such a shitty time when it comes to jobs and now he's marked probably for the rest of his career because he messed up. Sucks. I feel really bad for him.

The ignorant need not be employed.

In such "shitty times" when it comes to jobs there are dozens if not hundreds of people that could do Orth's job and not be an ignorant fuck up like he was/is.

Yup, pretty much.

It sucks when people lose their jobs, but this is the second time this guy made an ass of himself on the internet. Most companies have strict rules on such behavior and it's no surprise this happened. Hopefully he finally learned his lesson.

Its amazing how people are are so willing assume that this happened because the internet and Gaf is full of anti-establishment manchilds, or that the Gies thing is a reflection of hate for game journalism when this thread says otherwise. The message isnt "Keep your mouth shut while on twitter and let the PR speak", its the most basic message of them all: "Dont be a cunt"

Kamiya of Platinum Games/Capcom fame.

But most of GAF went wild over that because "OH THAT WACKY KAMIYA-SAN! SO PUNK-ROCK!"

Was that after or before Kotaku called him "clueless", made him the unwilling representative of Japanese gaming industry and on top of that requested him to read their article because it provided a deep "analysis" of his own short-sightedness?

Twitter really does have an amazing propensity to get unknowing people in trouble in their professional lives. It affects careers in industries as disparate as gaming and MMA. I would say it's up to companies to keep a tighter leash on social media, but some of this shit seems like basic common sense.

"Don't say stupid shit in public if you like your job" is a pretty universal rule, yet when it comes to Twitter, people seem to struggle mightily with the concept.

I think a large part of it is, that Twitter is still so relatively new and most people are still used to the old internet where it was a lot harder to stick a name on the internet to a real person.

That and people don't have a grasp of the fact that they're essentially in a public space at all time if they broadcast themselves like this. If you had to dictate tweets and you had to speak in a volume proportional to the amount of followers you have it might be different. Things sound suddenly strange when you have to not only say them out loud, but scream them from the top of your lungs.

I wonder how many followers he had before his tirade was picked up by sites like this one.

Edit:
Not excusing it btw. Once you send it out, Google is amazing at making sure it sticks around.

Especially since it's affects rippled through gaming and on to parts of mainstream media. Even though he never talked about XB3, given his background and his constant allusions to remaining always online being the only way to move forward, people put the pieces together.

But no, let's blame the internet for the push back against what is such an anti-consumer move. The internet reacted to what Orth instigated. It wasn't a premeditated act to sabotage his career. If you think GAF is responsible for getting him fired then kindly leave the website.

However, I neither will participate nor condone in taking pleasure in his dismissal/resignation.

People that work at Microsoft have to hear and read a bunch of criticism and at times, downright feverish hate from consumers on a daily basis. Some of the dude's that worked on Windows 8 have probably read articles and tons of forum posts about how shitty or incompetent that version of Windows is.

They don't go to Twitter and shit talk those saying criticism, they don't get so overly flustered that they potentially leak out details about a future Windows project, and they usually don't say things that many major websites would eat up.

Orth let the internet and the many people on it get to him, and instead of dealing with it in a non toxic way, he went to Twitter to let steam off and shoot some shit back at the internet. For someone that works at a company like Microsoft, he got way too attached to his own personal project and didn't think about the company as a whole.

Getting fired for what he did isn't sad, it isn't unfair, he royally fucked up in one of the silliest ways possible.

He'll get a second chance, but on another company. He showed everyone on the internet that he wasn't up for the job he had, which requires behaving like a professional even on social networking sites. And his bosses at Microsoft noticed that, and did what they have to.

I'm not glad about what happened, but I agree with that decision.

He was an asshole who lynched himself through his own assholery. Don't blame the internet for this guy's terrible decisions.

He is a better-than-average internet denizen who "lynched" himself, sure, via his own moderately foolish decisions. I don't blame "the internet" for his fate, but MS and other companies who continue to allow themselves to be pressured by mobs. They could've waited a month and had mostly the same result, except they would've retained what was probably a good employee.

The screaming mobs of the net only think they have this kind of power because people let them.

My last comment on this, but gotta disagree with the idea that he let the Internet "get to him." This is false. If you know him you'll know that what he said and how he said IS his personality. That's the kind of guy he is. And being that kind if guy caught up with him.
