EDGE: "Meet NeoGAF, the hardcore community shaping the games media agenda"

He is now 28, and tells us that he has turned down seven-figure offers from large corporations and gaming networks to buy his site.

Is this true Evilore ? If true, then you are last guy with sens of integrity and independence in this industry. Kudos.

Is the site really making $3m a year ? Kudos for running this forum to this point.

How is that any different than it is right now?

The waiting period is the waiting period, regardless of how large the queue gets. That's what keeps this place relatively on track. That, and a low tolerance for bullshit.

Maybe not to his point, but to expand on it: As the site grows, it changes. For better or worse, things won't be as they once were. I don't remember if it's been you specifically, but others have talked about how GAF has changed from what it once was and what that means for everyone involved.

I was trying to convey the difference between people who want to join this website because they want to talk about games, and people who want to join because it's the popular thing to do. You have both right now, but with popularity comes a slant toward the latter sort of person.

It seems like a lot of people have been accounts lately with a very small waiting period (~1 week). I'm not privy to how that all works (do you have a monthly limitation on how many people are given accounts?), so I'm not sure how to respond to your second part. I wasn't aware there was a large queue to join right now, if that's what you're implying.

Even if the site grows without the popularity factor, it still becomes less personal. I like the fact that when I checked my User CP, I saw that bishoptl quoted me, and I know who that is. I don't know everyone here, but I know enough people here that it feels more like a community than just a web forum. On GFAQs, unless you're posting on a dead board it's just a sea of names outside of a few renown trolls. That GAF could have a similar future fills me with despair.

Perfectly able to grasp the inherent value of the fishing game.
Oh, I didn't realise I was older than Evilore, fuck.

If I was in his shoes and offered over a million, yeah, that would've been a tough call.

Anyway, I still remember the whole Jeff Bell incident, that sticks with me more than any other "GAF vs the industry" incident. Still, hopefully GAF can keep a collective level head and realise it's better to be trusted, than feared or derided by the industry we all follow.

But seriously, GAF has great and strict moderation. Heck, just look at any thread from a year or two ago... you will see a ton of banned users.

The problem is that most games media are guys who would get banned from here.

I personally do not think neogaf should influence anything in the industry but for now the alternative is much worse.

So this is like the warmup for the GameTrailers video special, then. GT video already out-of-date before it launches?

Thanks for standing up for the website, EviLore! :)

How did this place become more important and influential to games than somethingawful and Reddit? I mean beyond their broader scope. I'd think they have more members with more access and vision in the industry as well as on the consumption side. It's probably pretty complicated, but I'm interested any insight people who a regulars at those places and here have.

I'm going to refrain from posting a laughing gif.

Somethingawful fucked up by restricting certain areas of the site to non-members.

When I first joined GAF it didn't take me long to realize that it's the defacto central hub of gaming information worldwide. Best place tbh to be updated on anything and everything gaming outside of specific niches.

Going on thirteen years. My favorite meme has always been about how NeoGAF "isn't what it used to be," which I remember being a big deal twelve years ago and pretty much every year since.

Most of the criticism directed toward the place is of the old-man-yells-at-cloud variety. People blaming "NeoGAF" for something remind me of people blaming "the Internet," as if it was a single body. But there are so many voices here that for the lazy critics it's certainly easy to pick out one or two bad apples and say "sigh...NeoGAF," while ignoring the quality contributors that outnumber the bad apples by a huge margin.

I've been to other forums, and frankly none come close. Either the volume is too low to be of any use to a daily reader, or the discussion is all mindless garbage with very little effort or intelligence put into it. NeoGAF has always had the best balance of volume and quality.

Reddit is full of casuals who play Borderlands, Skyrim, and Portal while SA has the sign up fee.

I think neogaf is more comparable to /v/ than either of those sites.

if by 'defining moment' EDGE means the coverage and story itself borne out of shinobi602's initial post on here made it all too obvious for peeps to (continue to) deny that most/all gaming media takes many of their stories/cues from NeoGAF, then I guess? But NeoGAF's affect in the industry has always been there, regardless of how ignored, or peeps' refusal to recognize it. But never was it so apparent how NeoGAF impacts games media than with the Adam Orth incident.

i mean there likely would not have even BEEN a story or coverage had it not been for shinobi602/NeoGAF. x-D

Why doesn't Evilore just sell neogaf and then use that money to start another site and have both website and be rich as balls.

All he would have to do is PM or just announce that he's opening another site and we would all flock there. Simple no?

We president now

On a serious note, yeah GAF does more actual journalism than the people that are getting fucking paid to do it. Wonder why everyone hates us so much? Oh right because the people we slam are the people those "journos" are trying to get into bed with.

I'm sure this has been said but it's ridiculously unfair to be almost blaming NeoGAF for Orth losing his job. He made the comments, they're his responsibility.

Yes, because obviously anyone willing to invest 7 figures into the site would allow this to happen unchallenged.

It's odd that NeoGAF is bigger than the site it spawned from, Gaming Age. But really it scratches all the forum needs I have.
