Is it just the gif or does she not draw the string and loose arrows?

It's what they feel. Like I've mentioned before, I don't think that's Kamitani's intent. But he's making a game that'll get world release, and a world stage will get to judge it.

A style this strong deserves strong words in response to it, though. And I actually find it surprising at how minor some people think these elements are. The defense is brushing it aside like people are talking about hair animation, or eye color; the people aganist it are speaking about it as if it's an element of a trend they dislike.

What's just "business as usual!" for many artist themselves, means a lot more to the audience who recieves the products, I suppose. I often find this interesting; it's funny when art boils down to simple self expression for the artist, rather than a larger statement. What a person shares through illustration says a lot about them, and there's a part of me that always find that side of things very interesting...

Wasn't there a recent episode of 8-4 discussing Kamitani and this kind of stuff specifically?

Agreed though, brushing aside the argument because one can't handle a term with negative connotations is a common defense.

i'd be embarrased to play this in public

bums me out that this kind of awesome vanillaware art style caters to that type of crowd but oh well

otherwise looks good

I don't have a problem with you disliking it

but I'm not sure you're right in labeling this pandering towards a certain type of person.

This is just Kamitani's style. He's created characters like this in all his other games. He's drawn characters like this on Christmas cards sent out to other people in the industry.

From the trailer seems like 9 times is max cast per spell, no mana bar...
No showing of potion creation or any buff/heal spell, need more information!

i mean, seriously - a full-grown adult reduced to hammering buttons & flipping sticks, totally absorbed in manipulating a piece of plastic electronics in an attempt to control a cartoon? gaming, at its core, is already, to a great extent, pretty fucking pathetic even without these controversial 'trimmings' :) ...

Goddamnit this thread... thanks a lot, Salsashark.

Imma go outside and throw a ball or something.

looks like it draws itself

magic bow

anymore animation frames would probably affect the rate of fire, so I'm ok with stuff like that if it's gameplay motivated

Just like how the Amazon is freaking huge and muscular because she is supposed to be a giant.

if anything she isn't muscular enough. Other than her legs she's not really buff and still has a shapely hourglass figure.

I was hoping for something like Raijin from Muramasa.

Holy crap I'm just noticing the arrows disappear as she uses them. It's such a pointless detail. I love it. Like the little crest on the fighter that bounces up and down.

Yeah they talked about that as a gameplay concept very early on.

That she would have finite arrows and have to pick them up off bodies or have the thief find more for her in order to fire her weapon.

So spacing and resource management are very important aspects of her playstyle

Probably the character I want to see/play the most

:) ...

i've never seen the whole 'what's offensive/immature, what isn't' thing being any more complicated than this. if you're not embarrassed about someone watching you vicariously blowing people's brains out, i'm not sure why you'd be embarrassed about just about anything else...

That's a flat way of looking at it.

"Good guy overtakes the evil, evil is punished!" is a very positive thing in just about every society. From soldiers to gladiators, men asserting dominance and taking control of what is theirs and the property of their people is a very masculine, "pride"-based thing. Why should this be embarassing, besides "oh no, I'm playing a video game!"

And lets not even start to go on about the honor and dignity that comes with military service. How different is playing COD than jumping up at the Oscars, and cheering for Saving Private Ryan?

However, lusting after a "loose" female... what society holds that in high regard? Immature displays of affection and attraction are the domain of children and teens.

Also, one doesn't have to be vain to be concerned about the opinions of the public eye. People in power are always concerned about what they place alongside their name and image. We;ve all had to make some compromises in this world, but some things ask one to go too far; "cartoony undulating boobage" is probably the "loss of respect!" button for many a type of people, lol.

So a new character video every week then? (judging by the upload times) Bring it!

I have to say before seeing this I wasn't interested in the Sorceress (or Wizard) at all. I was expecting less interesting spells. Seems you will be able to plan some major shenanigans with her. Also dat Blizzard!

Makes me want to see what the Wizard can pull off. Regarding the Elf gif above and the lack of string pulling, I think the gif is slowed down. Normally you can't tell there's an animation missing there. I also didn't notice the quiver emptying O_O

Complaining about the character design in a niche game for otaku is kinda pointless, to be honest. Vanillaware has a well-defined target audience:

What's next? Going after Senran Kagura?

Are any women offended by this character design ?

This is what I want to know.

Based on the outrage by a few users here... as a male, am I supposed to be offended at how they portray strong male leads? I'm not ripped nor am I a hulking mass of dude. Why doesn't vanillaware cave in and render all males realistically?? they are portraying a standard of dudeness that I cannot possibly achieve for my own body. I'M SO OFFENDED! SO SEXIST! Boycott vanillaware until all the character designs are boring as fuck.

People are still complaining about the proportions?

To me they seem like full figured Frank Frazetta style ladies mixed with Vanillaware's art style. Appropriate for a Dungeon & Dragons style fantasy game.

Regardless if you don't like the character designs for a portion of the characters, I think we can all agree that the enemies and backgrounds are absolutely beautiful.

Imagine all the vitriol Jessica Rabbit would have received if she debuted today.

Lol, 20 pages of slut-shaming and rage because "normal" women only have B-cups or smaller. Too bad you wouldn't get the casual anti-Japanese racism since the production would be American

Not sure, but I wouldn't mind listening to it if there was!

-nod- Maybe it's just how I'm feeling today, but the criticism didn't even feel that harsh. If anything, the defese is dropping down to that "You so crazy! You just doen't get it!" level, while the critics are listing why and for what reasons.

For me, I'm just kinda happy Kamitani isn't "typecasted" by now. Been making games that look like this at LEAST since Princess Crown, and yet he can still shock people with the characters and designs he comes up with. That's pretty impressive.

If you want to attack a game with bad female proportions, attack Mortal Kombat 9.

Those characters have like no hips at all. Its gross.

Every character, except the elf, has ridiculous proportions anyway. It's far from ruined. Please.
Heh, technically the Elf has borderline "ridiculous proportions". She looks to be 4'8" with the womanly curves of a six-year-old boy. I don't see complainers about that end of the spectrum however.

I don't think categorising a female as 'loose' because she wears a low cut top is terribly progressive.

The issue is that, no matter how much you try, you can't convince anyone that the "women" in a Netherrelm game are actually suppose to be *FEMALE*. ;)

Ok, I actually think Killer Frost looks kinda decent. Mostly because her face actually looks kinda nice, unlike KILLITWITHFIRE Raven and Wonder Woman...

Lol this.

People complain about female body proportion in video game need to heed this man.

I don't think you know what the word means.

Here, I'll help you. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misogyny
Misogyny (pron.: /mɪˈsɒdʒɪni/) is the hatred or dislike of women or girls. Misogyny can be manifested in numerous ways, including sexual discrimination, denigration of women, violence against women, and sexual objectification of women

2 of the 3 female characters come off as overtly sexually objectified.

I have never seen sexual objectification as part of the definition of misogyny before. This may have something to do with the fact that this is from Wikipedia and not an actual dictionary.

Are any women offended by this character design ?

Of course. None I know personally, but there must be.

Please, let's avoid discussing whether any of these proportions are "realistic." A real woman is a human being with a vagina. None of your cultural, physical, psycho-sexual biases as to what one should look like are relevant.

It's getting it deemed 'inappropriate' by HR thanks to someone seeing it and saying, "That's obscene."

I really don't care if people think I'm 'childish' for playing a handheld at work, I just want to keep my job.

Better yet... don't play at work or go outside the office.

... that's all you got out of that? And besides, the lack of any support on her outfit makes her very "loose"! *ahem*

Besides, I'm talking about the perspective of the casual observer, anyway. Progressive-smogressive, a non-gamer seeing something like the sorceress (or heck, even Jessica Rabbit) flopping around on screen, with over-exaggerated boob physics moving from her every arm gesture, wouldn't really come through as "wholesome housewife" now, would she? Eesh.

This is what I want to know.

I laugh at all the times this defense comes up, because it acts as if Men and Women view self image by the same values.

They don't. Not all of them, anyway.

And hey, history doesn't even value the same "parts" on each sex at the same rate! Is peck-popping as sexualy-suggestive as breast-rockin'? Do women request "junk jiggle" in their games? Do boys worry about the image a G.I. Joe gives them, the same way women and girls complained about the image a Barbie gave them?

The idea that Vanillaware is pretty even about their views of exaggeration is a valid one, yes. But the view that women and men would each view their own sex's exaggeration, and the exaggeration of the opposite sex, as equal and fair, is flawed.

Nah the wikipedia definition is fine. Problem is the reading comprehension of that poster

Misogyny (pron.: /mɪˈsɒdʒɪni/) is the hatred or dislike of women or girls. Misogyny can be manifested in numerous ways, including sexual discrimination, denigration of women, violence against women, and sexual objectification of women

Everything following that is no longer apart of the definition, but are examples of ways Misogyny, which is the hatred or dislike of women, can manifest itself. It doesn't mean that all those examples are inherently misogynistic. Just that they can be motivated by misogyny

tl;dr this isn't misogynistic please stop using that word so haphazardly people

It can be, but sexual objectification as misandry also requires denigration in some fashion. Alone, it's more like fetishism.

I guess in a roundabout way you could say sexually objectifying a woman by attacking some part of her body, simplifying her character to how X part is disproportionate, shameful, embarrassing or disgusting is a better example of misogyny. Swap Sorceress for a real human being and this is a 'slut shaming' (ie: bad term for misogyny) thread.

After checking the video, it looks like each spell has an accompanying spellbook color and letter next to the character data at the top.
Ice Jail has a purple book with the letter I on it.
Gravity has a purple book with the letter G on it.
Seems to be a bunch of spells categorized by type, as other spells had (what I assume to be) their first letter on books of varying colors.
Also seems to be a static number of casts/uses restrictions on certain, if not most spells

There's also Rock Press, which obviously is a book with an R. Interestingly, at 0:44 you can see the Wizard selecting spells, and he has, among others, Flame Burst (F) and Blaze (B).
(man, no matter how many times I see it in Katakana, Bureizu always throws me off. I always thing "Breath" first). Seems like they have an elemental thing going on.

It is kind of like she's being constantly motorboated by an invisible man, isn't it?

I don't think this is a hatred of women. But I do think it's probably borderline pornographic. I expect I'll buy the game myself, but can we all be honest that it's well beyond the curve in terms of the gratuitous sexuality? I mean, to go back to pornography, it's fine and people use it daily, but that doesn't mean you want to proudly admit to watching it to your sister-in-law or your boss.

Game looks fantastic. I love the character designs, but can see where some folks wouldn't be into them. That's cool. People like different things, so, whatever this game might not be for you.
