Official Motorsports Thread of 2013 (MotoGP, WRC, Le Mans, Nascar, IRL, V8's etc)

The manufacturer differences really aren't any different then they've been the last few years. Honda won 12 races last year. They'll win somewhere in that range this year. Marquez is 2 for 2 against Pedrosa. He's going to win more races...

Can he win the championship seems like the more appropriate question.

I just can't see it..he'll podium of course, I just don't think he'll be on the top of the rostrum again. From testing, COTA just seemed to fit his riding style that much more than anyone else's...not to mention that COTA is definitely a Honda track (35% of the track is in 1st gear). He won't enjoy that advantage at any other track. MAYBE Motegi...maybe.

But then of course, Marq can win next round and make me eat crow

The state of things in MotoGP is that only 3 guys can realistically win any given race, make it 4 if Rossi can do a little step forward. Then:

1. I don't think Lorenzo will win every race until the end of the season.

2. I don't think Marquez won't beat Pedrosa again.

Given these two, I find it extremely unlikely the victory at the COTA will be Marquez's only this season.

I know everyone has an opinion but what makes you think this? Of course he is inexperienced at the top level but to me he really looks like even after 2 races, that he belongs on that bike. I understand a lot of people don't like to get behind the "hype machine", but in Marquez case I think the hype is real, as he hasn't given me any reason to think other wise.

I always go back to that last Moto2 race at Valencia last season, where he started at the back of the grid and just tore the field up, won convincingly in tricky conditions. Its one of the best rides I have ever seen, that I am surprised that its not mentioned more often.

In saying all this, one thing he has bought into to MotoGP is a sense of excitement for the season ahead and he has everyone talking. While I loved Casey Stoner, I felt sometimes that whole "negative vibe" that he gave off, sometime bought down the sport as a whole.

If I could get better than 3/1 odds, I would put good money on him to win the championship. Big call I know, but he is capable imo. Has a rider ever won a championship in their first season?

At least Kenny Roberts Sr if I'm not mistaken. From my time and that I can remember, none. Rossi and Biaggi were both second on their first 500cc seasons.

Yeah same, I can't remember anyone since I have been following it. Its funny you mention Rossi and Biaggi as this vid come up in recommended and I just watched it

Also I found a video of the start of the Moto2 Valencia race. The vid also shows the reason for why he started at the back of the grid. The wording for the incident was 'dangerous manuever' and rightfully so, it definitely was and he deserved the penalty.

Please don't misconstrue my statement as a slight on Marquez...i think he's a great talent and I've been a fan of his since Moto2..i know he's the real deal...i just have this feeling that he won't win again this year. But like I said, he can win in Jerez and make me look dumb lol.

I'd venture to say you can probably add Cal as a possible future winner if he can put together a clean race this year.

edit: in Valencia, maybe his performance gets overlooked a bit because of what Pedrosa did that same day..both were awesome rides

Nah not at all, I know you aren't 'hating' on him. Being bike racing though you could very well be right and I will be the one who looks dumb. But yeah Jerez will be the real test. All the riders know this track well and for the three main contenders its a home race.

I agree about Cal but just has to pull it all together and would probably need some things to go his way but he is definitely fast enough. Would have loved to see Iannone on the other Tech 3, but hey Brad Smith.

Regarding Valencia, yeah I guess being the 'lesser' class it does get a bit forgotten and that was a great ride by Dani. I would love to see him win a WC, but I think he will always be the rider that was good enough but just never quite got there.

I can't believe Kenseth is so good in the 20 car so soon. It really makes Joey Logano look bad. Kenseth has as many wins in that car in his first eight races as Logano did the entire time he was there.

Johnson into Kyle. I can taste the tears from here.

edit: Nice to see Montoya at least lead a lap and be competitive for a change. He can fade away and finish 15th or worse now like he normally does (he isn't going to win this now that another caution came out).

Felt a bit lost this weekend, no F1, no MotoGP, no V8 Supercars (im from Australia), no sportscars (WEC, FIA GT, Blancpain etc). Had too much time on my hands, might actually get a decent nights sleep this Sunday night before I go to work in the morning, a rare thing indeed as due to the time zones Im usually up to midnight watching something-usually F1 or MotoGP.

Cant wait for Spa 1000km WEC, Audi v Peugeot, Ferrari v Aston v Porsche. Track of legends, should be a great race.

If anyone from Motorsport Gaf is around right now, Super GT round 2 from Fuji pre-race coverage just started. Going to be a 500km race.

If the rumours are to be believed it doesn't sound good news for UK viewers of the MotoGP world championship series.
Both the BBC and Eurosport deals are up this season and it's believed that BT Sport are well on the way to securing a deal for the exclusive rights and could effectively put the whole show behind a paywall.

The length of BT’s MotoGP deal is not yet known as terms are still being finalised, but BT
Sport is already planning its coverage. There is talk that it will aim
to supercharge its coverage using similar techniques that Sky has
adopted for its Formula 1 broadcasts.

This includes possible multi-camera options, such as rider point of view footage.

It is a continuation of BT’s rights acquisition drive as it prepares to
launch its sports service later this year. The company has already
splashed out on the Premier League football and rugby, while in a deal
with ESPN earlier this year, it agreed to take on high-profile
competitions, including the Europa League and FA Cup.

BT and the BBC declined to comment.

Doesn't sound good news :(

Uh oh, I really hope that won't happen. BBC (sports) is my go to place to watch MotoGP :( .

Here in Aus, we get the BBC coverage so I am guessing this will affect us too. I really grown to like those two commenatators. MotoGP is the only sport I follow, so if this happens I will be gutted.

@Tekniqs- Even here we don't hear much about Casey in regards to his V8 Supercar career. To alot of people including myself, he's a bike rider, always will be and seeing him on 4 wheels just looks wrong. He is also in the lower tier, which is probably the equivalent to Moto3 so yeah unless something really dramatic happens it doesn't get reported on. I know in his first race in Adelaide he crashed out but haven't heard much about him since, but I don't follow the sport closely, so maybe he is being talked about alot among V8 fans.

Just going by some internet research, and not by any first-hand knowledge, there's only been one 'round' so far of the Dunlop V8 Series(the junior V8 Supercar series). In the first race, he crashed out of, in the 2nd, he finished 14th.

In a field of ~30, that normally wouldn't be too bad, but he's joined a team that has won 4 of the last 5 championships in this class, which makes the result much less flattering.

Seems to me that if he doesn't at least produce some top 5 results throughout the season, he'll have a hard time justifying his ride and might find it hard to progress.

That would explain why I haven't heard much about him. I didn't know they had only had one round. I think just finishing the race may have been his first goal, but your right I think his team will be expecting results, despite his lack of experience. Going from open bike tracks to a tight enclosed street circuit like Adelaide, up against other guys with years of car racing experience must be a hard adjustment to make. I would like him to do well but secretly hope he doesn't so he may contemplate a return to bikes. Maybe the Yamaha when Rossi retires?

I still remember Eurosport MotoGP coverage - it was simply fantastic if I compare it to what we have now. On largest commercial TV, with two commentators (read: Two Rossi die hard fans) and commercial breaks that lasts for 2,5 minutes each. And during the race, we have 4 commercial breaks, so do the math how much race we miss.

And the most tragic thing - same TV Station snatched rights for DTM :\

Upcoming special on UK TV station ITV4 (8th of May at 21:00) called 'The Unridables' - a retrospective on the two stroke 500cc GP bikes from the mid 80's onwards (based on the YT footage). Hopefully the NSR500 gets a special mention, specifically the 1989 version which Eddie Lawson won the world title on as it's described by Matt Oxley in Mick Doohan's autobiography as being the 'nastiest, scariest race bike ever built - 310 kph and it didn't steer or stop'.

I hope there's some truth to the rumors i've heard about honda giving Stoner a wild card ride at Philip Island....marq taking on Casey...battle of "styles"
