Anyway, so where are you guys going to be watching the event and are any of you preparing for it? (Taking time off work or planning a little party?)

Me and my brother are going to watch it together, will probably make some wings.

Takes longer to cook but even better:

I don't need to take time off, the scheduling works out wonderful for me.

Streaming it while on IRC, as with all the events.

Which brings up another question, do you guys like to leave chatrooms or forums open during this kind of stuff or wait till after?

The 33% number comes from when you calculate percentages starting from PS4 and go down to the rumored Durango specs and the 50% comes when you start from Durango and go to PS4. Rumored specs are that Durango is 33% less powerful than PS4 and PS4 is 50% more powerful. Both are correct as long as you phrase it properly.

It's based on the rumors, but also basic math(s) : if B is 50% more of A, A is 33% less than B. Not rocket science.

I'm going to have the day free, thankfully. I think I'll probably watch it on my own since it's in the midday. Probably going to get something to eat while I watch. Wings sound like an awesome choice!

I used to, but after the PS4 event I just can't. Too many posts happening at once to really enjoy it. It's just way too chaotic, and a lot of the time the servers go down so you're focusing on refreshing the page ever few second to see what's going on.

When I finally do get a smart-phone (been on the fence forever), it's going to be a Lumia. Love the look of those and the whole WP OS.

I have the Lumia 920 and like it very much. The only real downside is that the Windows Phone 8 Marketplace isn't nearly as full as the Apple App Store or Google Play. But, so far during the first half of 2013 there has been some big name app releases so by the time you were to ever get a WP8 phone the store would be in a much better state. But, the phone hardware itself is very nice.

GAF is going to be the place to be on as we get juicy snippets, tidbits after the show. GT and other outlets will do the post-shows but it wont be distilled like it will be here. Oh and ofcourse the reactions

1. The leaks are unconfirmed. Until Microsoft announces something, they're bullshit. End of. You can have as many sources as you like, but it doesn't mean anything until something is announced. At all.

2. Unless you're the lead system architect at Microsoft, you don't know what you're talking about. If Microsoft wants to change something, they're able to do it. Microsoft are worth approximately 15x as much as Sony. If they can change, you can bet Microsoft can too. Nothing's locked in. Why? See point 1.

3. Don't forget, both of these consoles likely aren't shipping until Q4 at the earliest. They probably won't even start manufacturing until Q3. This is a far cry from 'overnight', as you say.

4. PlayStation 4's development has been leaking all over the place*. Durango's hasn't to the same extent. They've done a good job at keeping everything under wraps. They won't even admit the damn thing exists.



5. The only leak you've seen that's even close to being verifiable is that of an early dev kit. The alleged specifications you've seen have largely stemmed from that and are, at this point, incredibly outdated. Go and compare Sony's alpha kit with their final shipping hardware. They are not the same.



What do you think's more likely?

a) the specifications haven't changed since the early dev kit leak.
b) Microsoft is firmly executing its NDA on people, drying up sources' information sources.

6. We've had this before. It's not advisable to be cocky at the start of a new console generation, let alone before it even begins, because far down the line, when the platform matures, the boundaries begin to blur and the arguments begin to fade. It's not just about the specifications. Look at this generation. Look at any generation.

7. Just wait and see. You might be surprised. You might not. Sometimes things change. Sometimes they don't. Sometimes sources are right. Sometimes sources are wrong. Just reserve judgment and see for yourself when the time comes.

*Don't forget, it's likely that Microsoft has their own trusted sources too, verifying information throughout Orbis' development. And probably vice-versa too.

Designing a console is something that takes years, changing something as significant as the CPU, GPU, and or memory configuration is something that would result in a 1+ year delay, that's just how these things work.

That might now be a great reason, but for me I vastly prefer the OS/UI of WP8 over what I've seen of Android (not even considering an iphone). iOS and Android definitely offer more apps but the question is whether or not most of those extra apps are any good and the reality is that most of them just aren't.

I have a android tablet and barely use that many apps even though I'm always on the Play Store looking for new ones.

Yeah its fun, i do not think you will get major console war esque debates immediately because everyone will need to process the information. Its after the event that it will ramp up, and as reactions come from within the industry, positive and maybe negative, things will really ramp up

Gaming websites also know this is what will get people to clicks, they will do tons of PS4 vs 720 comparisons and that will just throw more wood at the fire. Geoff Keighley from GT already calls it the "console war" and you can bet they and others will just add fuel as it goes along.

The amount of time that will be spent comparing the 2 consoles, arguing etc will far outweigh if they got a low minimum paying job and worked up enough money to buy both, therefore not having to justify their purchase or their fanaticism to anyone and spending even more time arguing the next 4-5 years, if they even make it that far before they get banned or something.

Enjoy this time, it might seem hectic but its just the calm before the storm. Its fun to look forward to things, sometimes, more fun than actually getting the thing you were anticipating. Few days after you get your PS4/720 and play the rushed and disappointing launch games you will look fondly back at this time when your imagination was allowed to run free.

Because nobody else is putting down some dollars I think they will have bumped it a bit.

Edit: If either 1.6 (which I just made up) or 1.23 is true, it won't be revealed until DF makes an analysis later in the year. I don't think they will include that information in their released specification, if they intend to release those on the 21st.

That's what I figured. I just love the Modern UI and I'm very excited for the integration of Xbox stuff as well. Not to mention the Lumia phones are beautiful pieces of tech.

I love my Lumia 900 and can't wait to upgrade to the 900+ (whatever is out when I upgrade in November). The phone is amazing, I LOVE the ui and the snappiness of the phone. I know the app store isn't as huge as say android and ios, but it has what I want.

The other option would be to increase the # of CUs, but for that to happen changes to the APU would have to be made which would result in a large delay.

Oh, I certainly agree. My first smart phone was a Samsung Focus running WP7 so I know what a dead app store looks like. I really like the Windows Phone metro UI (not so much on Windows 8, though) and one major benefit is that the OS natively performs many of the functions traditionally done by apps. Twitter is built in, Facebook is built in, Facebook chat is built in, phone tracking/locking through a website is free and built in, achievement system for games built in since day 1, Xbox Live account info built in, Skype contact integration built in, and Nokia offers excellent apps on their own such as an excellent and free turn-by-turn GPS app. It is just really annoying how companies will advertise about their new must-have app and when I check the marketplace it cant be found. To them iOS and Android are the only mobile OSes in use. I don't even bother checking anymore.

CUs dont take up that much die area but the ESRAM wouldnt "fitting" the die after adding the extra CUs would mainly be dictated by the current die size and current available reticule size.

I imagine that CoD will take center stage, no other first or third party game is going to be bigger than that one, then it really depends what Activision have done with the engine or made a new one.

There is a scary situation where they might just have made modifications to the current engine, so it basically looks like a souped up 1080p, 60 fps Black Ops 2 on the PC, and that would be far less than what the 720 is capable of.


But i am sure the games built from ground up will look terrific, Alan Wake 2 could be the visual showpiece.

The best looking game at Sony's conference was undoubtedly the Capcom game, but questions how much of it was CGI make it somewhat murky, but i am sure that game is coming to the Xbox as well so the point is moot

from what I seen PS4 will be using a older GPU because it take time to design a APU & they always use the GPUs from the year before in the new APUs & the new Xbox will be using a newer GPU.

I honestly don't care about specs, I'm looking forward to seeing the games, the UI, the services etc. It's not the power, it's what you do with it that counts

I could see MS doing it. I think the laws of diminishing returns will be really be in effect graphically next gen. Let's say the PS4 multiplats are 1080p and 60 FPS, and the same 720 games are 720p and 30 FPS - do you think consumers will care or even really notice?
