As far as reviews are concerned, this won't get universal praise; I think ND are taking far too many unconventional steps in the design of the game for it to be universally loved.

Personally, I love everything I've seen and cannot wait to try it.

What's unconventional here? Maybe compared to their previous work, but nearly everything I've seen of this game are in other games. In fact, I'd like if they went more unconventional than I Am Alive as a proper survival game which is surprisingly looking more hardcore than what I've seen so far of The Last of Us.

Thesixthaxis' comment is atrociously stupid. The listen feature isn't there for you, it's to ensure that first time players of games like this can have a good time finishing the game without forcibly changing the experience for you.

Possibly. I just found the implementation completely wrong. That probably didn't come across well though.

Maybe they should have made a mode without the listen feature. Or when you choose the easy difficulty mode you have this and with the other difficulty levels you don't.

nofi's comments suggest that the feature can be turned off but that it's something important and mandatory for certain parts of the game. And having to use something like this often so you can be sure you're not stuck because of this is stupid.

To nofi : Is it like the scan feature in RE Revelations? I find it boring because it seems that you have to use it. (speaking about the Wii U version, didn't try the 3DS one).

You don't have to use it but in the demo's first level it makes sense to. To me, anyway.

OMG they added an option to turn listen mode off. That's stupid since I can go to options and turn it on whenever I want. What a horrile design.

there is the GOW demo (the one that unlocks a week or so before the game is in the shops).. I guess that is the exact same demo the press has played..

the backgorunds are a not as static as before. If you touch branch on a tree it will actually move.. there are lots of small details all around.

About those enemy spawns. I have played the demo 4 or 5 times.. and some of the enemies are not spawning at the same point. the Clickers are standing still at the same positions, and other enemies to.. BUT, the human enemies in part 2 of the demo, actually acted alot different everytime I died or replayed that section. They carried different weapons, and moved in different directions.. it actually surprised me a bit.
The wallhack perimeter can be enhanced (by using pills you find to upgrade your talents).. it covers an area, and tha can be enhanced. If there is an enemy inside that area you will see it as a silhouette.

Still say spawn points for the clickers will remove some of the tension and the wall hack actually being upgrade-able makes it even worst. Like I said before I would rather it be a subdued indicator of some sort for the sound, or the opportunity to turn it off all together and just use my audio system. I did not like the wall hack in UC and I think most if not all the perks were overdone and broke the MP for me, now they have crept into the relm of the SP.

Awesome!

The beauty of that gif, aside from lighting, foilage and all the visual stuff, is the little touches ND is so damn good at like Joel adjusting the rifle as it's "slipping". Makes the game so much more immersive and atmospehric.

I'd have preferred they kept it mandatory if it meant that enemy locations were dynamic and changed every time you played. Sounds like they've reached a compromise whereby enemy locations are set due to them making listen more optional.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy the game's not built around the mechanic, but at the same time, it does sound like they've gone in a direction that might ultimately hurt replay value.

I have faith that ND have made the right decision though, can't wait to play it. I just hope now they focus on fixing the hitbox for clickers.

^^^^^Well there you go, hopefully the game wasn't completely designed around listen mode, thus making for cheap deaths without it.

Possibly. I just found the implementation completely wrong. That probably didn't come across well though.

Interested to see how it's handled in the full game. The demo or early part of the game probably tries to tutorialize the Listen mode. I for one am not too caught up about it, but would probably prefer to not use it.

Man this looks like ND delivered. This june looks very light in terms of games but now The Last of Us and maybe State of Decay on XBLA seems to have changed that. :)

Brilliant. Listen mode can be turned off!

Oh and so can melee prompts... to make things even harder!

Couldn't help my self and watched a minute of the second video posted a few posts up.

That melee fight scene was pretty cool. The best part was when Joel smashed that guy's head on the cabinet thing, to see it go to 4min24secs in the second video.Made me laugh because I wasn't expecting him to do it.

My only real disappointment is that bullets still don't have the impact you'd expect from a game of this ilk. A shot to the chest should be severely crippling a human hunter, but they still shrug it off Uncharted style.

WHAT THE HONEY NUT FUCK IS THIS SHIT?

For those that played the demo, I'm thinking of buying the pulse headset to play this game (and Bioshock Infinite). Is it worth it?

I used the old PS3 virtual surround 7.1 Wireless headset.. and the sound is just fantastic..! it helps alot in any game if you want to experience the sound.!

If this game turns out to be a mediocre gameplay experience, wrapped up in a shiny package, would game reviewers dare to call that out? Is The Last of Us "too big" to criticize?

They called out GOW and GOW and those are arguably bigger since they are established franchises. They also called out GT5 which is definitely bigger, so you tell me.

It better not have mediocre gameplay. This will be the first console game I have bought in 2 years and will be the last on current gen most likely

It'll be called out. Heck, we actually have some negativity in some previews which we never see. Just like Bioshock Infinite was called out for it's mediocre gameplay, The Last of Us will be the same.

Seeing that second segment against the human opponents in the Eurogamer video was fucking awesome. THAT is how you make a cover based shooter. Where flanking and fleeing is more prominent than rushing enemies... player and AI.

Currently watching the demo. Combat looks great, except for using bows. Seems like there is no impact at all from the arrows.

The fact that they are established (and well-worn) franchises is what makes them a poor point of comparison, IMO. I don't think a willingness to criticize those games reflects anything about how TLoU will be treated.

I'm also not really worried that reviewers won't be honest about how they feel about it.

And if that should happen, you just know they'll use "The Least of Us" in the review title.

Damn, some of this is looking pretty intense. I foresee plenty of 'holy shit' moments during some of the encounters. Oh, and Bill totally reminds me of a heavy-set John Marston, lol.

ND seriously need new hardware to work with. What's on display here is nice and all, but there are some glaring flaws at times. Some of the textures are really low res. The lighting is very impressive though and the audio is fucking top notch.

Can't wait to see what they do on the PS4. What they achieve on PS3 is extremely impressive for the outdated stuff they're working with

Demo looks really good. Honestly convinced me on the game.

Only bad thing so far is the clear disconnect between the graphics in cutscenes and the gameplay. It is barely noticeable in the first video, but in the second one the scene were they wake up after the car crash looks clearly worse than the cutscene beforehand. Kinda took me out a little at first.
Also the unlimited bullet part in the first video when Joel is trapped is kinda dumb, but I realize why they did it so it is alright.

Overall very impressive!

It's been a long time since i didn't get motion sickness from games. I'm starting to think it might be a problem with the unreal engine.

Gameplay wise, i'm impressed. Seems like this game has a more mature story than your average game and scenarios too.

Some of the negative previews have got me worried. The fact that listening mode wasn't toned down seems like a boneheaded decision, and the gunplay complaints are worrisome.
