Update 2

Here's how the system works: when you buy an Xbox One game, But what if you want to bring a game disc to a friend's house and play there? You'll have to pay a fee—and not just some sort of activation fee, but the actual price of that game—in order to use a game's code on a friend's account. Think of it like a new game, Harrison says.

"The bits that are on that disc, you can give it to your friend and they can install it on an Xbox One," he said. "They would then have to purchase the right to play that game through Xbox Live."

"They would be paying the same price we paid, or less?" we asked.

"Let’s assume it’s a new game, so the answer is yes, it will be the same price," Harrison said.

From this.

But that doesn't mean used games are dead. In fact, Harrison told us, you'll be able to sell your Xbox One games online.

"We will have a solution—we’re not talking about it today—for you to be able to trade your previously-played games online," Harrison said.

The Xbox exec wouldn't give further details on how this system will work, but we're assuming that once you're done with a game, you can trade the code online and it will be erased from your machine. But what will you get? Other games? Microsoft Points?

So they might just be bringing used games in-house and creating a trading system on XBL? That's spicy.

Isn't the solution pretty easy? If you're offline the system still checks for the disc in your console. If you're online it checks if you are the current owner of the game. So if you take the game to your friend you have to activate it - at that moment the license is revoked from your own gamertag. As long as you're offline it will stay activated but only work with the physical copy in your console.

Wow, that's ballsy.

It's awesome if you can trade in digital games on XBL for Microsoft points though. And put it towards buying more digital games. Who needs GameStop.

Does Microsoft even realize how big the userbase for used games are? Arguably that's where the majority of game sales exist.

And Microsoft, Sony and every other publisher don't see a dime of that money, which is why they're taking these measures.

This does surpise me. I'm a little shocked it's been revealed in the manner it has. I'd at least have thought they'd try a little more "massaging" of the message.

I'm incredibly cynical about the larger market though. If MS gets enough appealing games there will be people (not me) who'll buy into this.

Now, having fired from the hip, I'm gonna read into it a little more carefully.

There is no fee, this thread needs to be locked as it's based on BS information. Check out twitter, an Xbox rep confirmed this.

Do you trust Phil Harrison (Microsoft corporate vice president)?

If yes then read this: http://kotaku.com/you-will-be-able-to-trade-xbox-one-games-online-micros-509140825

Looks like the PC Steam model is the way to go after today's news, gents.

Not at all impressed with how Microsoft handled the press conference and then danced around an extremely important issue.

totally called it when the xbox came out. knew this would happen. i'm even mad at myself for helping microsoft strangle the shit out of this industry.

good thing i found LoL and dota. f2p

Seems like a lo of people are experiencing severe bouts of denial I this thread. The no used game thing seems totally definitive right now.

Yup. This was inevitable on all fronts. They tried to contain it with game passes for used games but that wasn't enough. I'd expect this is partially why EA dropped so much support for the WiiU. And the PS4 will follow in the footsteps of Xbox One.

So they are really just looking at a disc as an alternate delivery mode instead of pressing the "download now" button on the Xbox Store.

In other words, you have to rebuy the game if you want to play it at a friends house.

I believe they said you could log into your XBL account on your friend's machine as well. And if you did pay the fee your friend would also have the game forever, as makes sense.

Well that would be kind of useless, no? You could buy the game digitally anyway, why bring the disc if you pay the same friggin' price to activate it? Can't be real, or can it?

I know it's heavy, but you'd better bring your console to a friend's if you want to show him your new game.

Whether this is true or not (Much confusion between twitter, wired and such)
I'm just happy this news gave me a chance to make this

So, used games will technically be supported in the literal sense, but MS/publishers will dictate how much it costs for people other than the original purchaser to play them. Christ.

Fighting game tournaments are fuckin' done on Xbox

1) Used game fee.
2) Massive system.
3) Kinect required to function.
4) Various Kinect issues that can arise.

LOL

You don't need to download it but could install directly from disk - it sounds like serials on PCs 1:1

Other users on the console will be able to play that game as well, Harrison said. So you don't need to buy multiple games per family. "With the built-in parental controls of the system it is shared amog the users of the device," he said.

WHAT THE FUCK HOW CAN THIS BE TRUE
