Geoff Keighley: PS4 Used Game DRM (EDIT: but now apparently on hold)

time for us all to stop gaming. RIP. I'm going back to reading books and listening to music. Maybe I'll start picking up alcohol after 10 years sober. Screw $ony and M$. Nintendo's cool and all, but they're just kiddie games. PC is for hacker-nerds, so fuck it. Maybe I'll pick up pottery.

For the staunchest PlayStation supporter, I think maybe this is wake up call. I listen to Keighley's words closely, and the guy likely has sources who know what is what isn't Is he likely doing his part to make sure his relationship with MS stays rosy, of course, afterall at the end of that Bonus Round he makes sure to shill for their coverage of the Microsoft E3 Press conference, not mention of Sony's or carrying a Nintendo Direct, so we know what's up and that is beside the point. The current model was bound to change, and maybe we need to stop blaming Microsoft for it, or claiming Sony is caving under pressure of the third parties, and except that. For those who say they are done with console gaming because of this you have every right, but I think you good and well you chose console gaming for other reasons than how many used games you can buy or who you can share your games with. It is pretty clear third parties are the ones who want such changes to be made. I know if I were that strong of supporter of the PlayStation brand, ask yourself worse accepting this potential new reality, and a I repeat potential, because we still have no comfirmation on anything yet, or concede the upcoming gen to MS, with all the PS4 has going for it, because MS were willing to do what Sony wasn't? The thought sucks and I hate, but the music industry analysis is one which stuck with me, and I would hate to see future creativity in gaming suffer, because gamers refused to sacrifices a little convenience for what will likely be a short while with the coming all digital age, out holding on to something we felt we are entitled to.

Woah, no need to go crazy with life altering decisions. Consider getting an e-reader instead books, way more convenient.

Well, this sucks.

I don't understand the console fanboy stuff in here. I guess some MS fans are looking for any opportunity to get a few licks in where they can.

Bottom line, this shit blows for the industry, period. And if this means PC, WiiU, and handhelds for me this gen, so be it.
Blows for the customer maybe. But why the industry? With the current model the industry stands to make more money.

You could probably argue for games as a medium this being bad, but that's not inherently the same as the Industry for this.

However, if it scares enough people away, or you DON'T see primarily used buyers convert while the primarily new buyers just buy fewer games then it's probably going to be a significant hit to profitability. Doubly so if the masses actually DO reject this and sell/return the systems in favor of other devices whether they're Wii U or Tablets.

Somewhere tonight in America, Joe Sixpack ventures out to a strip mall. He got $15 worth of gas, $10 worth of Taco Bell, a 12 pack of Budweiser (with the American flag can design), and kills 20 minutes at Gamestop, eventually buying a used copy of Need For Speed Most Wanted (the first one) for $5. He watches the Coca Cola 600 and kills the 12 pack and then pops the game in and experiences the cutting edge of 2005. He plays it until 3 am and never thinks about the game again. He does not defeat Razor. He does back to Gamestop the next week and buys a new used game. This is the used game experience that people romanticize.

Would just like to point out that Most wanted is still $40.

Of course, but we all know they won't. So...

What makes you think that? I'm sure people buy used games because new ones are too expensive. What makes you think that these people will all of sudden have more money for games?

Nah, I think this will cause the consoles to have extremely slow adoption rates.

I already have a PC, probably just a gpu upgrade next year and i'll ve set for a long time. I'll buy a wii u for sure for 1st party and platinum games. PC + Wii U.

With the kickstarter games that are coming up on PC too, i really cannot understand how anyone could skip it! Torment, wasteland 2, star citizen, shadowrun returns, project eternity, double fine adventure and so on! Not to count the free to play awesomeness! PC is entering into golden era 2.0, the games will be way better than dudebro AAA shit, although you will still get those on PC, even more than before now with PS4/Xbone having pc architecture.

Not if the entire industry crashes out of consumer rejection.
Which it won't. And you're living in dream world if you think it will. The average consumer is not an angry GAFer.

Let me explain, anecdotal, but whatever. I was watching the the Xbox keynote and there was bunch of guys from my class in a Whatsapp group doing the same. Now these guys are not informed gamers, they're not the types to sit on forums like us. After, when I found out about the DRM stuff -- and note, I'm not bothered about it myself -- I told them about it. Know what the reaction was? "Seriously? Shit one. Aw well". Your average gamer doesn't care. They got over it about 5 seconds.

This is the way the industry is going.

IF by that you mean the rise of the PC gamers. Sure.
Yeah, they'll all jump on to Steam and buy games that they can't trade in, rent and that are tied to their accounts -- oh wait... They'll spend money on a gaming rig that they probably have no interest in because they've gamed on consoles all this time. The casual will remain casual. Put your house on it.

I don't think there are a lot of us denying that digital will be the future of gaming distribution. I certainly don't have a problem with that, what I do have a problem with is making a physical disc act as a glorified registration key. If Microsoft, Sony, and the big publishers are clamoring for ways to reduce used sales then implement your digital distribution platform up to par with the services provided by Steam. Assure your customers that digital is the future and outline how the customer can be sure they will enjoy their game hassle-free.

As it stands now, the mere presence of physical discs means digital prices will be held back by retail stores that will demand price parity or else they won't carry the product at all. I have a choice between overpriced digital version of a console game or retail version that is in no way different from the digital version. Instead of passing off the savings from going digital onto the consumer they have forced retail to stay in the market as a way to justify the same high prices we have been paying all generation. Only this time they can nickel and dime the lucrative used market and remove the rights we enjoyed with physical media for the past two decades.

Holy shit. Why is it $40 used? I just picked something random off the top of my head. Can you buy it on demand from MS?

I work at GS but never cared to much for the NFS games. What I have taken from customers is Most Wanted and Carbon are the two best ones at least on the 360. We do not get those two that often anymore and when we do they sell fast. That is why it is $40 because people will buy it over the new ones with from what I have heard have less content.

Ha, and here we have an example within this generation for why having used is good. Would these games still be available on DD if EA had their way?

I can deal with no used game, Its the Internet required thing that kill me.

I can always waiting for discount for beat-em-up game like God of War, and I love to pay full price for stuff like JRPG/Import game.

There's classic gaming! GOG! Going out to clubs. Paranormal research. And yes, drinking.

Listening to a bunch of stuff on the Skinwalker Ranch on YouTube.

Everyone keeps saying 'wait for E3'. I doubt anything that puts the consoles in a negative light will be revealed there. They'll show the games, and let people get hyped for them for a few months so that when the bad news does come, we (most of us, anyways) will bend over and take it.

XBox Live price increase?
PS+ required for online gaming?
Used games?

'We'll have pricing, and more details closer to release...'

Exactly, these are the types of negative tidbits that will be revealed as late as possible and swept under the rug. Neither company is going to have slides detailing the specifics of their DRM implementation at E3 press conferences.

The only reason we know about Xbone DRM restrictions is because an MS exec slipped up in an interview and then it snowballed from there.

Interesting. I searched the 360 marketplace, and every NFS game from this generation (except the original Most Wanted which is not on there at all and the new Most Wanted which is still $60) is available for $15-20. I bet EA killed the original MW to avoid confusion with the new one.

Its a good game, especially considering its age, but it has bad slowdown and the worst acting since Night Trap.

So it's a product that holds its value, and is less likely to be exchanged, because it contains a lot of content!!! Wow who would have thought it?

All part of its charm!

Fucking Sony and MS say no to this bullshit. If both MS and Sony say no 3rd parties will have no choice but bet one of them said yes and made a deal (MS and EA).

Still hoping what mortimer said was true. Sony cancelling used game drm is good. It might even get MS to change, who knows, but its good to think that we still have a chance of a gaming future inc consoles without used game drm.

As we know at this time, it HAS to be online once every 24 hours.
Unless they have an exception or change, you can not.
But to be fair, there is alot of time and as they will be the very first to say they will be talking about it at a later time.

Not sure about that. When casual gamers find out about these newly implemented policies, I think that could change some opinions on this hobby for many consumers. I know a lot of people who rent, borrow and trade in stuff to play new games. Everyone I talked to about this information for XBone was basically livid and said they will just stick with what they got and they said they refuse to support such anti-consumerism. Of course there will be people that will gladly accept it, but I do not know if they will outweigh the people who refuse to support it. Let the money hungry corporations find out the hard way IF this is factual which I think it is. Look how many confident or pompous publishers and companies failed, lost money, laid off employees and closed up this generation because their products underperformed and were not embraced. They need the consumers more than the consumers need them, especially with the increase in game development. Adopting this new system is going to makes this significantly worst I think.

Are you asking about PS4 or Xbone?

PS4- they've said online won't be necessary but used game protection measures may be used by 3rd parties
Xbone - every 24 hours you need to connect to the network or you can't play anything, even single player games

We know for now the Xbox one won't let you. Don't know about the PS4's official stance yet.

Actually, we don't know 100% what either company is cooking up. That's the rub.
