Americans: Dogs are liked more and more popular than cats

I can't wait to read the in-print article in No Shit magazine.

I actually love cats. They're so much easier to deal with. But they don't become "another family member" like dogs do. There's more personality and emotions to a dog, with a cat it boils down to "lets play", "lets sleep" and "what's over here?". My girlfriend's mom's shitzu once cried in my arms. That was an eye opening moment in the cats v. dogs debate.

Cats are pretty monogamous. They don't show affection toward everyone and everything, but they do show plenty of affection toward their owner.
The ones that are generally very friendly seem to be fearless in general. My mom has a cat who loves strangers, loves to lay on its back, and generally just seems to have nothing in its brain saying "danger!" to things that most cats would shy away from.

Cats can fend for themselves just fine. I dunno about dogs though. Maybe in a rural environment but I don't see many stray dogs in the city.

You would if you visited Cuba or many parts of South America. The dogs do ok although they are quite sad to watch, and they generally want nothing to do with humans. They are more like coyotes.

Yeah, I've seen tons of stray dogs all over in Central and South America. Both cats and dogs are successful because of humans, though. I doubt the common cat would make it very long in the wild away from human habitation.

Cats aren't sociopathic. They just don't have the same social intelligence or sense of hierarchy or desire to please that dogs do. And you can't really train them - you can only tell them not to do something. And then they'll go back to doing it an hour later.

Some cats are super aloof, some are really shy. Some are very social with people.

My cat follows me everywhere in the apartment and cries when she gets left alone. When I sneeze she comes running up to me, chirping and meowing, like she's wondering what's wrong. She runs up and greets everybody who comes into the apartment. She's super excited when somebody comes in, no matter who they are.

I don't have a dog because I don't want to take on the maintenance. If I lived in a house in the suburbs, I probably would.

More than a dog? Nope.

I'd say they're about equal. Dogs are always crashing into shit. They're very vocal about anything and everything they're doing. Cats are subtle. They keep a lot of shit on the down low.

Both animals can be incredibly affectionate toward their owners, it just manifests in different ways.

Gif says it all. That said, I do like both animals. We've had dogs for years and they've been incredible. And cats are hilarious.

Encephalization level is a measure of relative brain size defined as the ratio between actual brain mass and predicted brain mass for an animal of a given size, which is hypothesized to be a rough estimate of the intelligence of the animal.

Humans have an Encephalization Quotient, or EQ, of at least 7.4. Our brain is huge compared to our total body mass. In theory we easily have the grey matter to efficiently control our body and keep ourselves alive, with plenty left over to to do some complex thinking.

Dogs have an EQ of between 1.2 and 1.4. Their brain is a little bigger than is needs to be in order to efficiently control their body. In theory, this gives them a bit of spare brain bits to think.

Cats have an EQ of 1.0
In theory, cats have exactly as much brain power as they need to efficiently control their body. In theory, this makes them a purely instinctual animal. The perfect predator.....brain-wise anyway.

tl;dr - Dogs are smarter than cats, and therefore better.

Dogs are a pain. My past few girlfriends have had dogs and they just got in the way constantly. They're the neediest things ever. Can't be gone from the apt for too long because of the dog. Can't spend the night at my place. Dog scratching on the door and whining while you're trying to get it on. Having to stop what you're doing every once in a while to take it outside so it can pee/poop. Then you have to pick up the warm log and dispose of it for the thing. If you take it out for a walk and it doesn't cause trouble, there's still a high chance someone else's untrained dog will fuck with your dog and cause a scene. They constantly demand attention, but are usually too big to cuddle up and sit on your lap. When they try, they pant in your face, which smells and is gross. They also have the whole "protect the owner" thing, so a lot of times they want to get between me and the girl while we're trying to chill and watch a movie or make out or whatever. All of your clothes get dog hair all over them and need to be lint .....

To me it sounds like most dogs you've come into contact with aren't in a suitable home. I feel that if you have a larger breed you should be willing to meet their needs, my brother has two german shepherds and they go absolutely nuts if they don't have the proper exercise. They can have tons of energy pent up. If you have a larger breed you have to make sure you can meet their needs. Honestly I wouldn't recommend a larger dog if you live in a small apartment or have a small yard, they're best out in the country. Work dogs need to be given some activity.

When selecting your dog it is best to choose by temperament instead of color/looks. My corgi has unfavorable patterns but he is such a great dog because he is patient, intelligent and very friendly.
fuck double coats, corgis are a hair pinata when summer rolls around
.

To me it sounds like your gf's dog has a lot of social anxiety pent up from too much attention. If you make a big deal when you leave them alone they can get separation anxiety, its easily treatable. Most dog problems can be addressed by doing some simple research, one of the traits I admire about dogs is that they can learn quickly, they are truly intelligent animals.

Back the fuck up.

Take a second to really appreciate the beauty of this dog. His nobility. His intelligence. He will protect you if a burglar breaks into your house at night. He can be trained to sniff out bombs and save hundreds of lives. He can swim and retrieve prey. He can herd sheep and other animals.

He is also loving, compassionate, and cares about your wellbeing. He will lay next to you if you are sick. He will comfort you if you are depressed. He is friendly to children, and wants nothing more than to play a game of catch.

He is man's best friend.

And he is everything you cat owners wish you could have, but never will.

I prefer cats. They're much more appropriate companions for plotting and scheming.

This is the most utterly ridiculous thing I've read all day. How on earth do urban legends like this get spread?

Ugh, I know a couple who threw the cat they had outside because "cats give babies toxic plasma and kill babies by sucking their air at night". That is a exact quote.

Luckily the neighbor they had saved the cat because they told him the same thing.

Meanwhile a cat knocked over a trash can and had loud shrieky sex outside your bedroom window at 3am.

Dog all the way. Also the butthurt in this thread is hilarious, especially the one guy who's quoting like 6 people in every post. Calm yourself, man. Theyre not gonna tke your cat away.

People don't like cats because you have to earn a cat's respect & people mistake that as them being assholes. A dog will love you unconditionally and become incredibly co-dependent on you which is super annoying IMO. Any time I've been around friend's dogs that are incredibly over bearing and it's impossible to get them to leave you alone. I guess some people like that.

A cat can just chill all day and then come chill with you every now and then.

and cats don't bark all fucking day so they automatically win

gif time

Never been a big fan of cats, I just can't get behind a pet that does so much damage to the environment. House cats are fine, but if as an owner you let your cat run free (or at the very least strap a tonne of bells to it) you're pretty much a shitty person :)

Dog owners will never get the entertainment of cat wrestling. I had two male cats when I was a kid that went at it every night (playfully) and it was absolutely hilarious.

I love dogs AND cats.

I have 3 cats in my flat, and they are awesome, i don´t own a dog because having a dog in a flat is just cruelty, but if i lived in the country i would have two or three too (and maybe even goats, goats are cool).

I´ll never get the hate both species suffer sometimes, both are great albeit different.

Cats can be dicks sometimes, yeah, but dogs can be too.

Edit: Breakfast time with my three little fuckers

Dogs don't bark all day, and dogs don't automatically love you. You have to treat them right when you give them love. As for your friends' dogs, they're very excited to see you is all.

Earning a cat's respect...lol

Hardly surprising. Americans are wrong about everything.

Lol im sure you use or have taken part in a form of american culture(movie, tv shows, music etc..) or products(windows, apple, google etc..) I guess americans can't be wrong about everything if you are using something made by americans right? :p

I bet his breath smells terrible, you have to bathe him more than twice a week, otherwise people around you get appalled by his stink, and I bet you have to nag friends and family to take care of (dog sit) him when you have (5 + hour long) plans that do not (cannot) involve him.

fortunately none of above apply to a cat owner.

Haha! Even as a cat lover, I find that gif a bit too much and a lil' disturbing!

People love to put emotions into their pets but these are animals, the dog doesn't "love" you, sorry, but is the truth. I would not leave a baby alone with a dog.

Of course I'm a cat person, I can't stand the smell of dogs, I'll rather have neither though.

No, I don't have to bathe him twice a week because he stinks, but I do have to give him a bath once a week because he's old and his skin is falling apart. How DO you know so much about my dog, jerk dude?

Whenever a game uses "middleware," I expect mediocrity. Just see how poor TLOU looks.
there absolutely no comparison to me. Cats are my favorite animal on earth while dogs are okay, I like them but don't have a strong affection for them. I have 3 gorgeous cats, they are extremely intelligent, loving, feisty, pretty, independent and have very distinct personalities, and even their "meows" are different. My male, the small 3.5 pound orange cutie, is EXTREMELY chatty, has an entire language and will respond with different meows or noises depending on how i talk to him or what I say, it's just incredible as I pretty much understand him. He knows how to open doors and cabinets by either pushing or pulling underneath or at the handle, and has taught my two female cats the same thing. I find that my friends who are cat lovers always tend to be of above average intelligence and are always the friends that have more outgoing and strong personalities like myself. So like me, they appreciate cats who haters will see as "cold" and "unloving". You have to EARN a cat's love with your actions, they don't give it freely to anyone who just happens to be around like a dog will. It saddens me to always see cats put down online, though the whole cat meme thing on the internet over the past few years seems to have dulled the senseless hate a little bit, thankfully.
