Definitely some arrogance there. Many, if not all, teams had taken him off of their board for character issues. It'd be different if this was the first time the Pats had taken a chance on a low character guy, but it's about the 20th time in the last 5 years. 8 5, Talib, Haynesworth, Moss, Tebow, etc. They're like the 70's Raiders at this point.

Teams with a strong locker room often bring in players with checkered pasts. That's a luxury that not every team is able to afford. The Patriots aren't alone in this regard. If it was 'arrogant' for the Patriots to draft Hernandez in the 4th, was it 'arrogant' for the Steelers to draft Chris Rainey in the 5th after he was arrested and charged with stalking, with their obvious assumption that he wouldn't do something like that again? No, I don't believe so. Steelers were burned by Rainey in that regard like the Patriots were with Hernandez, although obviously Hernandez' situation is incomparably worse.

Why do you say that? The Patriots immediately cut their criminal player, while the Ravens and Steelers continued to employ theirs as the faces of the franchise. There's no reason for the clowning to come to an end.
Pats did the ethical thing.
Ravens and Steelers harbored rapists and murderers for many, many years.
I think that should be reason enough to continue.

I don't think anyone's going to look at Hernandez without serious reservations.
Even if he's found innocent on all charges, you got to look at a guy who's careless enough with his career (and his life) to put himself in this kind of jeopardy.
You could argue with Ray that he was just in a bad place in a bad time, Hernandez looks like a wannabe mob boss right now.

First, I love Tebow in the list of low character guys.

Secondly, all are pretty risk free FA signings for low money outside of Ocho which was just dumb. All teams do it. I'll concede some arrogance in so far as them feeling that the "Patriot way" is going to suddenly turn all of those folks around but arrogance for selecting a problem child with a fourth rounder? Meh.

They didn't draft a convicted murderer. They drafted a 20 year old who subsequently made horrible decisions that ruined people's lives. When these decisions came to light, the team cut him immediately. Are you being flip or do you genuinely think the Patriots are somehow on the hook for his behavior?

So Hernandez was denied bail again, right? He's pretty much going to sit in jail until a trial comes around. Which means he's going to sit in a jail for likely a good long time.

I do wonder how much NFL teams learn about players before they draft them though, or even what they're doing off the field. It seems like they have more resources than I realized

You just owned yourself in your own argument. Hernandez may have had a few character concerns, but a few years with the thugtriots turned him into a cold blooded killer.
