Indie Games [July] Now Voting - Post 874!

Toma

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
So FTL is awesome so far. One question: in the tutorial, it says to move crew members, you click them and then click the room you want them to go to. In my first battle, I tried that but my crew members would go anywhere

Space bar is your bestestest friend. If something doesnt go as planned, SPACE BAR. If something goes as planned, SPACE BAR. If nothing happens, SPACE BAR.

Shelter Thread

The game looks absolutely gorgeous.

I know I sort of mentioned that earlier already, but to reach this many posts, it took:

7 days in the march thread.
4 days in the april thread.
9 days in the may thread.
4 days in the june thread.

and only 2 days in the current july thread. Lovely to see some more guys popping in here :)

Would you consider a game by Klei (Shank, Mark of the Ninja, Don't Starve) as an indie?

They've announced a new game
Incognita: Klei's XCOM-Inspired Espionage Tactics Game

Cheng says 10% of XCOM – a massive influence on Incognita and something Incognita designer Jason Dreger adores – is about information while the remaining 90% is “putting your guys in the right places and holding position, whereas in this game, if you’re caught in the wrong place, you’re going to die. So you need to hack, secure security cameras, you need to find out where enemies are and be smart about it.” Otherwise, your team will die, and they’ll be gone for good – akin to XCOM, permanent death plays an important role in Icognita’s strategy.

Line of sight plays into obscuring the player’s vision, but the world is procedurally generated, so randomized level designs keep you from knowing where enemies are or gaming the system for the fastest, easiest solution.

Another one of those "If you are unsure what it is, its fine to post about it here" cases. I was actually just discussing with someone in that thread about the usefulness of this monthly "Indie Games mega thread", because I posted over there that I would appreciate someone posting that information in this thread as well.

Edit: Thanks for posting it here btw. I am trying to get more people to do that because I cant keep an eye on GAF 24/7.

Its really nice to see this thread moving fast and more people posting here, didnt even noticed that I missed the Android Assault Cactus update. That game is looking more incredible in every new update.

FTL is awesome. My first run lasted...10 minutes. Enter a nebula, got attacked, no sensors, lost weapons, sent crew to rooms, turned out they were on fire, rapidly losing power, tried to vent the ship, but it was too late.

Based on Klei's track record this will be an instant buy for me. I also think they did a better job with the Don't Starve beta than any other beta I can remember, especially with the current sweet trend of charging people crazy amounts for alpha/beta access.

A big thanks to Toma!

Just spent 30 minutes with FTL and can already see what the hype was about. I was interested in the game with it's comparisons to rogue-like games, a genre I fell in love with when I played Druaga on Ps2. I was a bit cautious when I saw videos of the game. It seemed to stray too far from a traditional rogue-like for me. The combat in particular scared me. Seemed too fast paced...too hectic...too "real time strategy." These may be positives to some but one of my favorite aspects of standard Rogue-likes is the turn based nature.

Still, the game sounded great so I had to give it a go. When Toma offered up a free code it seemed the perfect chance. After a short download I fired it up and jumped into the tutorial. Seemed pretty cool but that RTS nature of the video I saw kept creeping in my mind. It was then that I hit the combat tutorial. Now or never...

Then I saw it; the Pause button! You can pause the combat to issue orders...this was a game changer for me. Suddenly everything fell into place and I really started getting into it. I'm sure some will scoff at using pause but for me this allows a nice and relaxing experience.

Upon starting a new game I have to say my favorite aspect are the random events after each new jump. I can totally see myself wasting many hours on this game. I would highly recommend the game to anyone looking for what appears to be a highly replayable, fun and relaxing(or hectic if you prefer) game.

Found a cool freeware game, not sure if it's been mentioned before
Survivor: The Living Dead

From Jayisgames:
Probably not the gaming experience you were expecting from the title, Survivor puts you in the role of a post-teenage girl in the early 90s who is trying to defend a house from the living dead. Investigate background items, push things in front of openings, lock doors, and do everything you can to stay alive. It's a surprisingly cerebral experience punctuated by bouts of OH MY GAWSH ZOMBIES ARE ATTACKING. Bonus: lots of references to the early George Romero films.

It's really good

So FTL is awesome so far.

Just spent 30 minutes with FTL and can already see what the hype was about.

I'm so glad you're both enjoying it as I am too! :D

I'll only post my initial impressions now as I've only played the Tutorial and am yet to start a proper game but if what I have played so far is indicative of the full game then I can confidently say that all the hype is very much deserved.

My initial response to the game was how pleasant it looked and sounded. Cute and charming and aesthetically pleasing. Always a good start.

I thought the animation of one of the crew ostensibly tapping away on a keyboard whilst they're piloting the ship together with the tutorial dialogue boxes popping up on the screen was an endearing touch. Whether intended or not it made me feel like the cute little character was typing directly to me. Aww!

Speaking of the tutorial I was very impressed with it. It made what could be a fiddly and complex mass of games systems easily comprehensible. If the rest of the game is crafted with as much care and consideration then I'm really in for a treat.

Did I mention that it's cute and charming yet? Well it is :).

Lastly, I was impressed with how immersed the tutorial got me with regard to the combat section with the token enemy. That is a good game as far as I am concerned. Whilst the graphics and sounds are very nice and do the job perfectly well, they are a million miles away from the ZOMG!THOSEGRAPHICSHAVESUCHCOMPELLINGTEXTURESTHATIT'SJUSTLIKEYOU'REREALLYTHERE that so many AAA games strive for nowadays with their [misguided, in my view] attempt to replicate reality. However, I say all this being of the opinion that graphics are the props [like the props on a theatre stage] and the real experience of the play [or in this case, game] is going on inside the audience/player's minds. So for this game to draw me into the combat as well as it did is a testament to its design and execution.

tl;dr: it's bloody brilliant. Do yourself a favour and play it!

Oh and Toma is awesome!

Space bar is your bestestest friend. If something doesnt go as planned, SPACE BAR. If something goes as planned, SPACE BAR. If nothing happens, SPACE BAR.

LOL I am going to make abundant use of this game feature! I tend to get on far better with games that allow me to be methodical in my play style. If I have to juggle too many elements all at the same time whilst deal with arcade quick twitch type gameplay, making decisions on the fly, then my brain turns to mush and it's all too much for me to cope with.

Thank God they put the space bar pause in!

So I finally remembered to try Nitronic Rush with a gamepad. Now that is the way that game was meant to be played. A AAA quality freeware game

Has anyone seen their Greenlit followup Distance?
---

And another freeware game, one of my personal favorites:
Against The Wall
The freeware game is the Alpha version

If you like it, there's a Greenlight for this game. Hasn't been Greenlit yet

I am cross-posting here some indie game which I am waiting for on PC this year.

  • Kentucky Route Zero: actes 3 to 5
  • The Walkind Dead season 2 (not really indie...)
  • Spelunky
  • Owlboy
  • Gorogoa
  • Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number
  • FaeVerse Solitaire
  • Contrast
  • Escape Goat 2
  • Toki Tori 2
  • Among The Sleep
  • The Witness
  • The Stanley Parable: HD Remix
  • Shelter
  • Tiny Brains

So far my journey on FTL:
  • Start the game on easy
  • Do the first jump
  • Arrives near a star with a hostile ship
  • Destroy the aliens
  • "You don't mess with Captain Panda"
  • Next jump another hostile ship
  • "It's going to be easy"
  • They shot me
  • Fire in almost all ship
  • I'm dead
This game is awesome! It shows that you doesn't even need amazing graphics to pass an atmosphere of tension, and the OST is so good to listen. More opinions soon.

Great list. Regarding Kentucky Route Zero, I seem to recall them saying that they expect to have episodes three and four out this year and the fifth would come early next year, probably in January. They're goal is to get one out every three months.

I've been playing FTL non stop for 2 hours and a half, and the game lives to all the hype generated around it. I don't have proper experience with roguelikes games, but this game is awesome and one of best games I've played! Can't believe I reached the end zone in my second playthrough!

As I said on my previous post, it's incredible how a game with rather simple graphics can pass the feel of tension when you encounter a difficult enemy, or that relief when you encounter a merchant where you can repair your ship after barely making alive through a difficult combat. Other positive point for FTL is the incredible soundtrack it has, the songs gives that "space feel" contributing even more to the atmosphere that the game want to pass.

I died after 2 hours near the end boss and I'm not even mad, you learn with your mistakes and it helps the next playthrough. I can't recomment FTL enough it's a must play.

Lake of Roaches - a short atmospheric horror exploration game

Lake of Roaches is disturbing and weird, I mean really weird, but I wouldn't call it a horror game, rather some dark and twisted comedy about two older guys, you control them both at the same time, going on a fishing trip that went badly Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas style.

And don't worry about games being mentioned here before, even if it happened there's always a chance that someone could have missed some interesting titles.
One more thing, when you write about games try to include a screenshot in your post, this way it's easier for Toma to pick up games, when he's preparing new thread.

Thanks for the advice. Updated my post with images

I'm considering getting an Early Access game. First, would Early Access games be discounted during the Summer Sale? Or are they excluded because they're basicially betas?

And the games I'm interested in are either Infested Planet and Under The Ocean. Has anyone played them? Impressions?

Yeah, I'm sure there will be Early Access games on sale. In fact, there's one as the Daily Deal right now.

I'll Check whether I have some Info on Infested Garden, but I highly recommended staying away from Under the Ocean for now. I bought it and it's not worth the money atm with bugs, UI issues and more. I do recommend checking out the free prequel Under the Garden though.

Oh, and if anyone missed it, I recommended a bunch of cool freeware games in an earlier post.

I'm not sure if webgames count, but Ripple Dot Zero released a few days ago and from what I've read it might be making a full release, although on twitter they said they currently don't have any other plans, but the website version will stay completely free.

I absolutely love the soundtrack though.

So I was just thinking I want to start playing more indie games since every time I try one I like it and have fun but for some reason I never pursue more games. So I googled neogaf indie games and got this thread. :D It's nice that for a lot of things, someone on GAF has already made a thread for what you're looking for. :)

Anyways, can I get some recommendations? I liked VVVVVV though I never beat it since it got a little confusing after I got deeper and deeper into the game and explored more of the map. I can't really remember many more games that I've tried. I'm not big into puzzles and that's a bit of a shame since it seems like a lot of indie games are that, puzzle games. I like action/adventure, shoot em ups, platformers but I'll try anything. Those point and click are not my thing either though The Walking Dead is awesome and I think it counts as that.

Rogue Legacy most notably atm with lots of replayability (playing it for 20-30 hours now). Also, check the older threads for free 2D action games, they had some pretty fun ones like Broforce. Dust is very fun too an currently 50% off on Steam, basically a pretty Metroidvania with frantic action combat. There are probably hundred more, but I am a bit busy now.

You can't go wrong with Rogue Legacy and Unepic. Also check Dust: An Elisyan Tail if you like metroidvania style.

It popped up here few times, so I just let you know that Lacuna Passage has been added to Steam Greenlight and Kickstarter. It's an exploration-survival type of game set on Mars. According to dev it draws inspiration from titles such as Dear Eshter, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Pokemon Snap - I've always dreamed of seeing Pokemon and DE in the same sentence.

Super Meat Boy
Mark of the Ninja
Vessel
Frozen Synapse
Nitronic Rush (freeware, link)
Limbo
Super Hexagon
FTL

Of those I've played I adore each of the following:

Bastion
FTL: Faster Than Light
Limbo
NightSky
Thomas Was Alone

They're all pretty different and there are demos for all of them except FTL on Steam or on the interwebs if you hunt around.

However, FTL can be had uber cheap at the mo so it's definitely worth the risk of a couple of spacebucks if you think it might be to your liking.

This thread is awesome as are all of you guys for giving us some support on Cactus :D

After Techies mentioned Greenlit gaming in last months thread I sent them a build of the game and now it's on the front page! It's crazy how good our responses have been from people who get to play the game, the major websites haven't responded to anything yet but I'm feeling the love from the awesome indie community <3

I've been too busy making Cactus and trying to finish The Last of Us to play many indie games lately, but I might have to make time for some of these recommendations. Not enough hours in the day dammit.

The Last of Us is incredible. Luckily I finished before getting involved with Steam. What part are you up to? And if you missed them, I listed a bunch of freeware games early on this page. As if you need even more indies to play..
