Kamiya concerned that Nintendo isn't marketing Wonderful 101 much at all

Although I understand his frustration, this time he shouldn't really complain, if it wasn't for Nintendo probably he wouldn't even be working at this point and Platinum would end like Game Republic or Mistwalker.
Still Nintendo could get their act together, if they believed in the project enough to fund it, they should try to let people know about it. Thanks to Internet and social networks marketing is cheaper and more effective than in the past when the only options were printed magazines and TV.

Nintendo not marketing something?
I'll be damned.
Wait I am sorry, let me be more honest here:
Nintendo not marketing something not a Nintendo creation?
I for one am shocked.

As has been said, the people who will watch the Nintendo Direct are the people already aware of the title so I really do not know why people try to defend Nintendo with that.

W101 to sell less than Pushmo confirmed

Thanks ***_****** you done it again.

You're hilarious. "Again." When was the first time?

And according to people in this vurrry thread ,TW101 was "destined to bomb." Stop blaming me, yo. I'm doing my job. I bought the goshdern console just for Platinum's games. WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT FROM ME?

I will say it again, Nintendo fans, please. If you are one of those action junkies who advocate gameplay over graphics and production values but still somehow skip this, I don't know what to say.

This. Over 9000 times this. Also for all of those complaining about how Naughty Dog is the worst developer ever on those daily The Last of Us threads because now everyone wants to make a copy of Uncharted 2: this is also to you.

People may well skip it at release because they know it will not sell well and they can get it dirt cheap a couple of months later.

I do this all the time and it saves me a lot of money.

yeah this is my MO 90% of the time too, but after seeing what became of stuff like Sin & Punishment 2, Killer 7 etc i don't think i can sleep

So is the Wii U the gamepad?

It doesn't appear to attempt to solve the main problem - differentiation. People will watch this commercial and they'll still believe that it's a Wii. Particularly with the Wii controllers.

More pre-launch promises that Nintendo has not yet kept up with - the second Gamepad should be front-and-center. Or at least the Pro Controllers.

I was talking to one of my less gaming focused friends and he said what I was thinking.

Kamiya should have pitched this to a 3rd party so it can be on more platforms. I don't think this is going to make anywhere near a dent compared to seeing this on PC/360/PS3/WIIU.

Best of luck to PG.

Kickstaster, anything. WiiU is floundering. Sales are not going to be as good as they could be.

Now we see him concerned about marketing. I thought I saw a commercial the other day unless that was some youtube video I saw on the game.....

Thats why other publishers are better at this than Nintendo, Journey had the full backing of Sony and has advertised like this small struggling underdog made by 2 guys with fedoras in a basement. Nintendo should have gone with this route with this one.

That's the problem. Kamiya is the biggest thing this game has going for it in terms of marketability. But seeing how poorly most Kamiya games sell few people have that experience to illicit an insta-boner when his name appears.

To everyone else it's a superhero game for kids with Pikmin-style strategy elements.

No one has brought up Excite Bots yet?

Nintendo has a history of sending games out to die. Their whole marketing operation has stunk since Kaplan left. I would blame Reggie, since North American advertising is his purview, but I am pretty sure that all media requests get funnelled through NCL, as they set out all marketing guidelines. Poor Reggie. In retrospect, I believe "Check the box" was a coded warning. Reggie, blink three times if NCL is holding you hostage.

Nintendo needs new management, asap.

I would go even further. If you bought NSLU, and pre-ordered Mario 3d world and you don't give this game a fair shake.. Smh

Yeah, they should've said something like "sponsored by the brand new Wii U" so people know it's not the Wii.

I feel the gameplay and word of mouth on this forum already sold me on the game. I don't need a commercial/print ad campaign (although, seeing a bunch of midget/dwarf/vertically challenged actors dressed as superheroes trying to stand on each other's shoulders to emulate the 101 could be a funny commercial).

But this gameplay video looks...wonderful

Nintendo has no idea how to market and position new (non-casual) IPs in the market.

They're also extremely conservative and risk-averse so they don't want to spend money on new big IPs and promotion. This is exactly why almost everything they do is either a Mario spin-off or a sequel to a classic IP.

Btw, considering today's gaming landscape, TW101 (as interesting as it looks) shouldn't even be a full price retail release.

There's still a market for such games, just not at retail and certainly not at $60.

Smh @ guilt trip day 1 buys. I know that feel. And they're always Japanese titles.

This can't be life.
Japanese titles grow more irrelevant in the west sadly. Wel, outside the usual big names like Mario, Pokémon, Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo or Resident Evil.

Don't worry, Kamiya, we will start a revolt on Miiverse.

We have the power to make the game sell.

Everyone lie and say it's like Zelda to those on there.

I don't think there are many third party publishers tripping over themselves to fund a platinum game, especially a Platinum game that looks like this. TW101 wouldn't make a dent on any platform, it's not what the masses want.

I don't think any marketing Nintendo does is going to help this game, at least in the US. It's releasing the same time as GTAV, which will probably kill any launch hype Nintendo could build up. Don't know what they were thinking with that release date.

I'm obviously not getting my point across.

If I was a dev looking at developing for WiiU right now. I'd look at the state of the system and the almost complete lack of marketing by Nintendo and say no. I'm not going to bother.

When exactly do you think they began developing Wonderful101? And how was that a stupid thing to do back then? You think P* were flooded in cash and offers after smash hits like Bayonetta and Anarchy Reigns?

Yeah Nintendo should definitely advertise it more to support a new IP. At the same time the whole not understanding what it is like Okami isn't Nintendo's fault. The game is simply too unique to communicate what it is in an advertisement (which may be why Nintendo doesn't advertise it).

What did it look like to a lot of us when we first saw it? The responses were Pikmin, its played from the isometric game and you control a group of characters and gather more. But its much closer to Bayonetta as an action game. Then you have the drawing mechanic with different symbols like Okami.

If Nintendo were to advertise it quite a few people would probably be confused and with Pikmin 3 coming out right before it could hurt its sales as people may see it as a simple copcat product.

The reason I love Wonderful 101 is its uniqueness. That same uniqueness prevents a lot of people from understanding it. Should Nintendo attempt to get more magazine previews and ads? Yes. But its key to remember that attempting to properly advertise this game its very hard.

Without knowing what kind of deal they have, it might not really matter to Platinum how many copies the game sells from a financial standpoint. I mean, name a single company that went bankrupt because one of their Nintendo published games bombed? Now, it's obvious that a creator always wants to get his game in the hands of as many people as possible, but that's a different (if totally valid) issue. And I really doubt any other publisher, or Kickstarter for that matter, would have bankrolled this project in the first place. It's supposedly a big game with an unusually long development cycle.

Still, the game doesn't come out for another few weeks, and Nintendo doesn't really market their titles until very close to release.

Nintendo never really markets their games much, which is why their games outside of the big famous characters do small time numbers.

I don't get why people don't get this game.

You recruit and carry around a bunch of superheroes and other folks and form weapons with your group to destroy alien whatevers.

I'm happy that they at least market their Kirby games. For Kirby Super Star Ultra, they set a world record for most people chewing bubblegum (pink, of course) at the same time. Or was that for another Kirby game? Which one had the Kirby shaped foam blasters?

Yup. Except for a handfull of people (including me, because I think it's awesome) nobody will give the Wonderful 101 a fair shake. That's part of the Platinum curse; they make very enjoyable games, but if it's not tied to a well-known franchise like Metal Gear it will flatout bomb. Especially in the west.

Even Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance was also very far from being a sales success in the West. We can say that Japan "saved" this title.

It does seem weird with all the money Nintendo is sitting on, that they don't seem to ever give a fuck about 3rd party titles on consoles at least. I mean during the last direct we got a montage of games that have been out for years elsewhere or multi-plats people are likely to get elsewhere. Instead of focusing on Deus Ex or Batman, they should really push stuff like W101.

They spent 1.5 times the manpower on this than Bayonetta 1?

I think I found the problem. They were never going to recoup on this as a Wii U exclusive.

Um, W101 was at the direct, had a couple of minutes on it, whereas third party games had about 5 seconds each.
