Oh I'm ready for this shit.

fuck. yes.

No one wants a throne you've been sitting on!
looks like shit.

had zero hopes for this movie ever since they changed the story from the book.

New image looks pretty good, and I actually like the new name since it works well thematically.

I was just thinking about this movie last week and thinking how there's zero chance they follow the source material much since it would involve Cruise playing a pretty inept soldier for half the movie, which I doubt he would go along with. I'm sure the enemies will be changed as well. Speaking of, has there ever been any official or semi-official art of the Mimics?

What's with the strange body enhancement armors in films lately?

Between this and Elysium, how effective is stapling metal to your bones going to be really? It leaves so many open spots for bullets to get through...like the head.

Man, I'm really bummed out that they changed the name.

WB have yet to confirm anything and that site is wrong about a lot of things. I wouldn't necessarily trust it until we hear from then.

Then again, Edge of Tomorrow seems more marketable than All You Need is Kill, but a lot more bland.

all you need is kill, sounds terrible! Edge of Tomorrow sounds good enough.

Both have mediocre to terrible scripts, although I think this one underwent heavy rewrites.

Elysium looks like it's hitting all of today's hot political topics; class warfare, universal healthcare, immigration, TSA screenings etc.

That premise sounds like something I would have come up with if I were 7 and a half years old and just got done watching Groundhogs Day, and that includes the "level up skills" system.

I don't think Cruise would have a problem with playing an inexperienced soldier. Just think of Born on the Fourth of July.

Coming up with allegories is easy. Take a real conflict, put it in a new time or place. Subtlety, however, is hard. Can't remember the last thing I've seen that has an ounce of subtlety to it.

Both sound like parodies to me. Can't remember the last time when I could tell the difference between sci-fi and a parody of sci-fi either. Well, Moon was good. Moon was four years ago. Okay, well I answered my own inquiring.

Yeah, in the most simplistic, rudimentary and heavy handed way possible. He literally just put a visual spin on the caste system, which is not only the most literal and lazy means of conveying those themes, but it's already been done before. Upside Down for example. Not to mention the fact that Blomkamp has a tendency to abandon his thematic premises after the first act in favor of mindless action.

It's literally Groundhogs Day, Halo and Gears of War in the script that I read. It was inspired by gaming in the worst way possible. Hopefully the rewrite ditched everything but the initial premise.

Along with Jupiter Ascending this is my most anticipated sci-fi project of 2014. I hear that the studio is very confident about this project so I'm definitely eager to see the first trailer and see what this supposed 'buzz' is all about.

"Edge of Tomorrow" is infinitely better than "All You Need Is Kill".

What were they thinking?

Agree 100%. When I first read the draft that sold I told a friend that there was NO WAY the studio would release a film with a title like that.

And lo and behold...,

Not that 'Edge Of Tomorrow' is that much better mind you. It makes it sound like a South Korean soap opera.

Satire doesn't have to be subtle. Dr. Strangelove, Animal Farm and Robocop aren't subtle, but they're all classics. It's the execution that matters.

It also brings up memory of all the bad sci-fi/action movies Jodie Foster has starred in.

Yea this is exactly what I got from the latest trailer. I'm no longer excited for the movie.

You cant be serious...

To be fair, I can't think of a lot of other actors with a career like Cruise's. Dude was a movie star in the 1980's and he is still an A-lister pushing the lead role in major tentpole summer blockbusters 30 years later. I'm sure there are a couple others like him, but I can't think of any off hand. Mel Gibson probably would be if he hadn't tanked his career a few years ago. Stallone maybe?

You do realize that you chose three tongue-in-cheek satires because you HAD to right? Humor doesn't need to be subtle. The viewer must be in on the joke. The parody must sell as such.

There is nothing tongue-in-cheek about modern sci-fi. It's all trying so very hard to be intelligent and real and gritty and yet allegorical in the most obvious and uncreative of ways as possible. Again, I can't tell the difference between parody and non-parody any more.

At the end of Elysium, what do you expect to get out of the allegory? Because for Dr. Strangelove it was a laugh out of yourself, your culture and our government. At the end of District 9 what did you get out of it other than a "derpy" message that did not need to be said? And, sadly, by today's standards District 9 is subtle, and humorous despite being neither of those things.

Exactly.

It's possible to touch on those themes in a big way without having to resort to some lazily put together hamfisted overarching allegory. Children of Men for example is probably one of the best films having to do with Illegal Immigration.

If there are two directors I keep a close eye on, it's Doug Liman and Paul Greengrass. Probably has to do with the two being Bourne directors and have two different filming styles. I'm just curious if they go on to make good and successful movies post-Bourne.
