Microsoft will "aggressively challenge" any gov't attempt to spy through Kinect

I think this whole fear of the government spying on you is paranoia. If the government wants to watch me sit in front of the television in my underwear eating junk food, they're welcome to watch.

K2 cant spy on you...as been said, but if government tried to use k2 to spy on you, we will wage war in court against it.

Against Agencies? You must be new to America.

Are you seriously so incredible naive?

The hell is wrong with people? Smartphones, laptops, mics and headsets all have these very same functions and your all worried about 'spying' now, 10 years later? Hypocrisy. Those crying wolf aren't even buying the device (Sony fanboys) and voicing concern for something they don't even want in the first place? Hypocrisy. If MS uses the device in the manner suggested they'll get sued to kingdom come. They have huge departments just to prevent this kind of thing. It's all opt in data, nothing the consumer is committed to.

Have you been paying attention at all these past few weeks?

I feel sorry for people who are so willing to surrender their personal freedoms. It's not paranoia at all but its pretty clear you don't follow the news at all or you would know that.

I also think it's nonsense to be concerned about privacy on the Xbox One when you're on the internet where everything you do is stored somewhere and you're open to hacking and other things. It seems very hypocritical to me.

People used to think that the government listening to your Skype data is paranoia too.

so why didn't they do this when the government was seeking data from their other stuff?

Because people didn't know about it then lol. If I buy XbOne, the Kinect is getting electrical tape over the camera, aimed at the wall and then covered with Styrofoam so it can't record my voice.

And how exactly would you know about my stance on privacy for the last 10 years? Calling people hypocrites without the shred of proof is a pretty bold move.

I was dead set on getting both consoles day one at the end of last year. Certain policies and decisions made me change my decision.

Did Microsoft get sued for giving access to Skype?
Did Microsoft get sued for giving access to outlook.com?
Did Microsoft get sued for giving access to Skydrive?
No they weren't. Why? Because they were doing the governments bidding in accordance to the law.

Thinking it would be different with the Xbox One is delusional at best.

To be honest you guys should be more worried about Sony (and any other major company) protecting you data on their 'secure' servers than something like this. Yeah, there's a real valid concern based actual history.

Not one of the well known XBone DRM supporters calling out Sony fanboys. You were one of th few people supporting DRM so I guess i should ignore

I feel sorry for people who live their lives in fear. If you guys care so much about your privacy, throw away your computers and cell phones and go live off the grid in the woods somewhere.

microsoft might not provide data to NSA, but what guarantee do we have their 3rd party partners wont? you know, the ones who WILL be receiving our data.

In Spain we call this defence "Y tu más" (and you more), our politicians mastered it. It doesn't matter if I do crap, OTHERS do crap too, and maybe is bigger.

Oh God, anything for the good fight.

Call us when you care about your privacy.

They do. End of story.

oops thought it did ... doesn't matter the wii u, vita and 3ds does,, oh no!!!!

You keep bringing other things up and it's irrelevant bullshit. Let's flip this for a second and pretend we're on the Apple forums discussing the privacy issues with an iPad. Now I come in and start "defending" it by saying that Microsoft and Google do this too! It isn't just Apple! It's ridiculous. Stop.

I'll also point out (since you're somehow apparently unaware) that Sony and Nintendo are both Japanese companies. They are not named in this PRISM mess because they aren't the NSA's bitches. That's not to say that it isn't entirely possible that these companies and/or their governments also use their devices for these kinds of purposes, but so far there is no evidence of that.

So relevant. Captures the seemingly innocuous setup, the horrible possibilities, but also the seemingly (but perhaps not actually) paranoid nature of people worrying about Kinect and the govt. Its about personal abuse, but it really applies to the situation as a whole..

First they'll say its not happening, then they'll say any collection of data is rare, then they'll say that yes, while collection is widespread and universal, everybody does it, and finally we'll settle on nobody having any right to privacy anywhere at any time, with constitutional protections being a quaint relic of some long lost age.

That's how these threads always go.
Every time.

I only brought them up for those who think I am arguing this because I am somehow a MS fanboy.

and there are people here going further than NSA and are talking about hackers around the world.

so now maybe you can see my points. There are different groups here arguing different things.

I feel sorry for cowards whose only options are run away or put up with it rather than fight it.

Let's just remind ourselves what Microsoft did to lose credibility on this, considering how ignorant some posters have shown themselves to be:

• Microsoft helped the NSA to circumvent its encryption to address concerns that the agency would be unable to intercept web chats on the new Outlook.com portal;

• The agency already had pre-encryption stage access to email on Outlook.com, including Hotmail;

• The company worked with the FBI this year to allow the NSA easier access via Prism to its cloud storage service SkyDrive, which now has more than 250 million users worldwide;

• Microsoft also worked with the FBI's Data Intercept Unit to "understand" potential issues with a feature in Outlook.com that allows users to create email aliases;

• In July last year, nine months after Microsoft bought Skype, the NSA boasted that a new capability had tripled the amount of Skype video calls being collected through Prism;

• Material collected through Prism is routinely shared with the FBI and CIA, with one NSA document describing the program as a "team sport".

I have nothing to hide. If you also have nothing to hide, then you have nothing to worry about.

I hope you are 15, that exact phrase was used in the Communisms countries. Don't you worry about the secret police, the abuse or the tortures if you have nothing to do.

Console wars has reached a new level: I don't care to live in 1984 as long my beloved company wins the holy war.

That you want to think MS is scheming with the government to spy on you?

Or that they are scheming to sell pictures of you in your underwear to the big evil cooperation for advertising data ?

So, they signed a contract with PRISM to allow information to be passed to the NSA and now they're going to aggressively fight the NSA if they want information ...

They're advertising Bengay on a games console. Think about that for a second.

Edit: Kinect 2 version = Say "I love Bengay" to receive 20% your next tube!

contests with ads are okay because usually contests are sponsored by a third party. Ones that are just simple ads and nothing more got to go.

This is just a plan to make consumers think Microsoft won't allow the Feds to listen in, so they'll be more relaxed and more susceptible to saying compromising things because they think Microsoft won't allow them to be heard, so the Feds can do more drone strikes on US civilians who jokingly said they'd shoot up a school and novelist can be paid more taxpayer money by allowing the Feds to listen in.

I'm onto you, Bill Gates. Or whoever runs it nowadays.
