Great move from MS, perhaps this has something to do with MS recruiting Jason (forget his second name) from Steam recently. He was apparently the poster boy for the platform and a huge advocate of the summer sales.

Revamped windows platform incoming?

Games for Windows Live will be discontinued on July 1, 2014. Although it is available through Steam, Age of Empires Online requires features of the Games for Windows Live service. You can continue to enjoy all the features of Age of Empires Online as the service will remain 100% operational until July 1, 2014 when the server will shut down. Please visit the Age of Empires Online forums for additional details.

Does this only apply to AEO Online, or does this mean GFWL will shut down completely next year?

Seems like new thread material because that's much bigger news than being unable to just buy stuff.

I hope retailers like Steam are prudent and update their store page to include this cut off date. It would be awful to buy a GFWL game in a Summer sale only to have it shut down a week later.

I have quite a few unplayed GFWL titles on my shelf, bummer.

Guess what i'm doing before christmas.

The games should work in offline mode I think but either way I still have: Batman Arkham City, Dead Rising 2, F1 2011 (to finish), Resident evil 5, Fable 3, Dirt 2 and 3 (to finish), Halo 2 (want to beat on legendary and get cheevos), Section 8, Battlestations, Bond, Bioshock 2, Dawn of War gold edition, Dark souls, Viva Pinata, RedFaction and some others I downloaded and forgot about.

Throwing them in the trash.

I will be honest, I bought them because I like GFWL cheevos being tied to my main 360 account as a complete list of goals reached in my games, it's why I prefer to play games on my 360 then PC most of the time.

Sad to see it all go :(

I can't believe they'll be shutting down gfwl this soon. is it that hard to keep the activation servers running for those that previously bought games. It had to be aoe online that is closing.

"Games for Windows Live will be discontinued on July 1, 2014."

not a lot of ambiguity there.

Apparently, publishers are officially on the clock now. Dark Souls seems to do quite well during sales but I have no faith in Namco to do the right thing.

If this is indeed system wide, Steam and other DD retailers should at the very least add a very clear message to potential buyers that important features will vanish from these games in less than a year.

No, it's the corpse of the first one.

That's not to say the new one doesn't take after its parent much, but time will tell.
Sony's made strides to keep content accessible from PSP to Vita, and for some PS3 games to be crossbuy on Vita, and we still don't know what they plan to fully do with PS4 but some form of BC seems to be in the cards, and while Nintendo FUBARed their account system they still actually had a system in place to fully transfer Wii purchases to Wii U. Don Mattrick had been completely flippant about BC and Microsoft looks to be more than happy to unceremoniously drop old services, so of the three I'm most pessimistic about them.

Though if Valve were in the console arena I'd probably be most optimistic about them period for keeping stuff accessible far into the future. Especially as your HL keys from 1998 work just fine to get you basically all the Gold Source games.

In their defense, they just scored one of the key people in Steam's success. If anything can change their approach to backwards compatibility, it's him.

Still, it's wise to be cautious.

If I wont be able to finish Dark Souls and lost my money because of that MS POS then I will get seriously mad and will like my money back.

I have very little confidence that my Xbox 360 DLC will still be available for download after they discontinue the 360.

Me either. They've shut down live for the original Xbox, and now windows, I'm sure it will go great for the 360. I don't trust them to ever buy anything more than xbla games. I'm not going to buy $60 digital games on their service.

so I opened up the GFWL marketplace to see if there was anything I want to download

Apparently I bought a bunch of shit from Game Room at some point? Probably using Bing points.

I don't even remember what was in Game Room at this point.

If you downloaded the free demos they were permanently added to your game list. I was pissed when I downloaded the demos and they were permanently added to my game list.

Hey stump, why don't you try opening GFWL marketplace to see if there's anything you want to download?

Good idea, stump

"You must install Windows Live Sign-in Assistant"

OK, I'm not sure why, but I'll install that. Whatever.

Hey that's weird.

*googles*

Two possible causes:

4TQOVwX.png

1) GFWL does not support two-factor auth and blocks you from using it! Boy I love GFWL!

NsudiZN.png

2) GFWL apparently chokes on passwords with non-alphanumeric characters even when the same passwords work for other Live tools. Boy I love GFWL!

If you generate a per-application password (login.live.com) you can circumvent those two issues. Apparently I spent $1.09 on GFWL Marketplace during its long and sordid history.

I went through every single title that is not available on Steam and thus will officially disappear from digital PC sale when the marketplace closes end of today... and the vast majority of them are already not for sale.
afl live: not available for sale in canada on gfwl
battle vs chess: not available for sale in canada on gfwl
carneyvale showtime $9.99
crash time 4: not available for sale in canada on gfwl
gears of war: $19.99
halo 2: listed, but not actually available for purchase
hour of victory: not available for sale in canada on gfwl
game room: apparently not available for sale in canada on gfwl
quantum of solace: not available for sale in canada on gfwl
shadowrun: $9.99
juiced 2: not available for sale in canada on gfwl
legend of the galactic heroes: not available for sale in canada on gfwl
mahjong wisdom: $4.99
rugby league live: not available for sale in canada on gfwl
tinker: free
tron: evolution: $39.99
vancouver 2010: $49.99
viva pinata: $19.99

where's waldo: not available for sale in canada on gfwl

I had to change my Uplay password because Far Cry 2's in-game password form doesn't support special characters. Thanks, Ubi!

That is just so hilariously sad.

I think I had a similar problem with some specific EA game not liking non-alphanumerics so I had to change my Origin password to something purely alphanumeric.

So it's everyone's fear of digital games come true? I won't be able to play my copy of Age of Empires III next year since it's on GFWL. I wonder if the execs at Microsoft are still wondering why people fear a digital only future.

Apparently, the date of closing the web store was silently pushed back? Reposting from other thread.

PC webstore is still up, despite it being the 23rd here on the east coast, lol.

EDIT: Wait a minute, now it says they are closing the store on August 25th.

As part of the recent Xbox 360 system update, Microsoft Points will be retired and the Xbox.com PC Marketplace will be closed as of August 25, 2013. We encourage you to spend your Microsoft Points balance prior to this change. Although you will not be able to purchase new games, you can continue to enjoy previously purchased content by downloading it through the Games for Windows Live client software as usual.

I guess they changed it?

It's a little bothersome for me to think that all my Xbox 360 digital purchases will just disappear once MS decides to pull the plug on it. You have to consider this current gen has been the longest ever and the one to have really capitalized on digital distribution of content. I would hope MS keeps that in mind, and spends the time to unify the overall system, which would ensure we don't have an incident like we did with the original Xbox Live closing down.

Anyways, back on topic - I still have a bunch of GFWL games I haven't activated yet. Maybe I should go do that ASAP before the 25th rolls around, just to be safe.
