XBLA (Xbox Live Arcade) News, Announcements, Reviews, and Impressions Thread

Dead Rising 2: Case Zero. Its a prequel and a maximum of 5 levels can be transferred to Dead Rising 2.
While that is definitely true, playing Case Zero first might make you disappointed with the full game. I was, since CZ gives the impression that you'll be playing in a little town, but "Fortune City" in the retail game is really just a massive mall with casinos in it. CZ had a much more fun environment that wasn't just a repeat of what DR1 had.

Great to see the Splosion Man love up in here! One of may favorite XBLA games, one of the best on the platform. I was so hyped about the sequel but I couldn't quite get past all the visual mustard they slathered on top. It was ... weird. Might go back and try it again as I close out my XBLA career (lol) over the next year or two.

Any impressions on the Mark of the Ninja DLC? I adore the game. Been playing through the last few weeks and just beat it last night.

how does the MGS collection hold up? Also interested in the silent hill collection, but I hear they are bad ports?

The MGS Collection is great, especially MGS3 at 60fps and HD looks absolutely amazing.

And yeah stay away from the turd that is the Silent Hill Collection.

Quick question dudes. I'm totally against paying for online, so i don't have a gold membership, but i'm willing to use up all my saved 48h cards and dowload some games.
Now the question is - will these games stay ative after my gold membership expires, or is it just as with PS+?

Yes, but 48 hours trial won't work for the free games for gold members.

Any reviews up yet?

And another one:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-08-21-flashback-review

That's something you could never say about the original Flashback, for all its faults. It might have been obtuse, fussy and frustrating, but it had a clarity of purpose and vision that this anniversary edition struggles to match. Time may not have been particularly kind to Flashback, but 20 years on, it hasn't been forgotten. It's unlikely we'll be able to say the same for this remake in 20 days.

5/10

This is a really depressing SoA to go out on.

Is it though?

Brothers was a fantastic game that will win plenty of awards from game critics this year.

Charlie Murder is a lengthy beat em up with great loot and an interesting backdrop for a story. Not too mention, it came out for 800 MS points which is a rarity on the marketplace these days.

Flashback may not be the greatest remake or even any good at all, but at least you get the original game included if you liked the game when you played it on your old consoles. Also, it's also only 800 MS points.

And Turtles looks like it could be a lot of fun. Batman: AA combat that is focused around four player co-op with moves that tie together with your friends.

I think that while it isn't the greatest SoA, personally I wouldn't call it disappointing, but I guess that would be determined by the genre types you're into as well.

I'm hoping we see some better Flashback reviews. I was really looking forward to this game.
I will try the trial mode and see for myself.

I didn't get Charlie Murder last week cause it just looks like Castle Crashers to me.
Was that a mistake?

I'm with you on paying for multiplayer, but as SirKhalid pointed out the 48-hour trials won't let you access any Gold-level deals. Here's a link to a free month of Gold that I used last month to get Assassin's Creed II, according to the thread it's still active. Just remember to turn off auto-renewal (and delete your payment information afterwards, if you're really paranoid (like me)).

Flashback is bad. Very, very clunky. It reminds me of something like Deadlight or Hydrophobia.

Good ideas but the core gameplay is just z-tier.

You';re not wrong. MS should really abandon the promotion until next gen at this point.

Anyway, been having a lot of fun with Neverdead. Surprisingly good game. Also ended up buying ZoE HD and it's really nowhere near as bad as some people claimed it was. Entirely playable and very enjoyable to boot.

Playin' Flashback now, and... The clunk it has is the clunk I'd want, actually. The leaning into animations is a perfect throwback to the way it felt to watch the over-animated character perform actions on the Genesis version of the game, which is the one I have experience with. It's these old games that make me hate the overly precise, mechanical feel of many modern such game; it takes all the character away from the protagonist.

It's that very charm that made me want to play the games in the first place: Blackthorne, Flashback, Out of this World, and Prince of Persia were all games that were different than what I was in to, but their gloriously overdone animations and unique stories made me give them all a look on various 16 bit consoles.

I don't like pressing in the L stick to duck though. Aiming is way smoother than it used to be, but I don't hate that.

I think that review stating "we won't remember this remake in 20 years" is kinda missing the point. This is a way to revist an old achievement, not a way to make a new landmark. Does anyone think we'll be talking about that Prince of Persia Classic remake in 20 years, either? And for those that have experience with that game, how do you think this compares to it? What makes them so different, as for it to be praised, and this to be panned?

I can't speak much for the game as a whole (just part way through the trial, and don't plan to buy right now), and even if I bought it, I couldn't break down it's overall closeness to the classic (never got too far in it), but it's leaving a decent impression on me for a 10 buck remake that includes the old game as well (Which really should be standard practice by now...)

This is actually good news for me. I loved Deadlight. Even the second act in the sewers and I've enjoyed what I have played of Hydrophobia.

Thanks! That gameplay trailer looked like a lot of fun

So: get Flashback, get The Dishwasher VS, wait for a Shadow Complex sale, wait for Super Time Force, or wait for some other upcoming XBLA game?

Beyond "this year" we don't know when Super TIME Force will be coming out.

If you choose Flashback then make sure to try the demo first to see if you can live with it's supposed failings.

Dishwasher is a fun game, they also just put out Charlie Murder.

You might have to wait until xmas but Shadow Complex should go on sale again this year.

For upcoming games have a look here.

If you haven't already, try all the demos for the games that are already out. If nothing really grabs your attention then wait until something does.

Let's see...
Tried the Flashback demo, okay but certainly no Shadow Complex. So scratch that
Dishwasher is a lot of fun, like a melee focused BLEED
Of course, I loved the Shadow Complex demo
Super Time Force still looks awesome
And thanks for that link, was looking online for XBLA-only calendars. Magrunner and The Wolf Among Us in September, How To Survive sometime in the Fall

I just got around to trying out Flashback and while it impressed me by being a hell of a lot better than Amy, it's still not great. The controls are fine, if a little simplistic-feeling, but the animations suck and there are a lot of shortcuts there, like jumping to a ledge and teleporting the last bit because they couldn't bother to position the platform within the correct jumping distance. I'm assuming that this is going to end up as frustrating as Amy, but for different reasons.

And when Conrad said "Woo, let's party!" when I killed a bot, I quit out.

Narco Terror -- Not a good twin stick shooter.
R.I.P.D The Game -- Not a good forced co-op horde mode
Scourge: Outbreak -- Not a good third person cover shooter

Mars War Logs -- A clunky mix of KOTOR and Mass Effect with a dash of Batman. A lot of heart, I don't think it quite works based on the demo, but I'd pay $2.50 for this.

Flashback -- Feels like a bad team doing a remake of a good game. I like the clunkiness of the original. Here it still feels clunky, but also less satisfying. I'd pay $2.50 for this on PC and use a code to unlock the original.

damn, flashback looked like shadow complex from the screens. wish it was good enough to bother with. only other similar games i can think of are sotn, and outland and hell yeah both of which were ok but games that didn't keep me compelled to finish (shit i have a save right at the last boss of outland but i haven't bothered with the boss yet bc i know it's just gonna be some trial and error until i get it and i'm not that inspired to)

wow that bully price is amazing, anyone who likes open world games should check it out. pretty sure i got the GOD when it was no sale for 10 before.

la noire is 15 (yeah got the complete edition on pc for $5 last week), and red dead is 15 as well, if revolver was 10 i'd rebuy it but eh

So, the only way I have now to buy stuff from the marketplace is to add a credit card?

I had a few points left in my account. I tried to buy Bully from the marketplace website. The only available option I see is to add a credit card, and no trace of my points.

edit: oh, ok, found the answer in this thread.
It seems you have to try to buy something from the console for the conversion to happen.

You can still buy MS point cards and let them convert to your account. It is just that right now you can't use the money in your account on xbox.com. I hope that will be fixed in the future. So you need to buy Bully on your console.
