Nintendo Announces Nintendo 2DS

I understand the need to get a cheap 3DS out there and $129 is getting dangerously close to $99 impulse territory, but, not like this. It should be possible to make a $129 2DS that is still desirable to the over 7+ crowd.

And all it loses is the ability to play stylus based games while placed on a table, the ability to attach the second analogue stick and the ability to actually play games in 3D. It gains the ability to look ugly as fuck, become more cumbersome to hold and doesn't fit in your pocket anymore!

What a deal. Can't wait to get a portable Nintendo that isn't portable and a 3DS that doesn't do 3D!

EDIT: I do not own a 3DS yes, I have been waiting for a small price drop or a redesign to jump in. These changes are not what I wanted.

Okay:

1.) How does it lose the ability to play stylus based games on a table? This actually perplexes me.

2.) I'm sure a second analog stick add-on for 2DS will come soon enough. Monster Hunter is too big for it not to happen.

3.) Yes, 3D is gone. That's the point.

Seriously, you have three options for 3DS gaming, why complain about options?

They did, with the Pikachu Yellow and Pink 3DS XLs. They'll likely continue with those limited editions as an option for people who want white XLs. I just hope we eventually get a Green x White XL.

But those are color mixes D:

(granted the 2DS is a mix too but it's barely there)

This just serves to indicate the core problem with Nintendo's ability to name and market its devices. 3DS was a problem because if you release a new version of it without 3D, then it's no longer a "3DS", even though it actually is. What the hell else are they gonna call it?

"Wii U" is a problem because, well, everyone knows why but let's not go into that.

It IS portable. You can carry it anywhere you want. Might not fit comfortably in a small/regular pocket but a carry-all case will fix that.

And as for the 3D, that's why they call is a 2DS.

The production of this does not stop the production of the OG 3DS or the XL. So why are your panties in a bunch?

This will sell well enough. Instead of buying one 3DS to share between your kids, you can consider buying one to each. Scepticism in this thread reminds me of the Wii remote controller announcement. I called it brilliant back then. This isn't, but it's good, really good.

Now that's just being picky. You want them to release a solid white 3DS XL, despite them having evidence that said color sells poorly in North America.

True... I guess I'm just bitter is all.

Not like I'm buying a 2DS anyways, I'm content with my Animal Crossing XL :p

I actually think its pretty cool.. Should have thrown a second stick on there though.

Why? There's almost nothing noteworthy that uses it other than Monster Hunter, Kingdom Hearts, and Kid Icarus (for lefty mode!) and this system isn't meant to be an upgrade

Let me make this clear in $AU

3DS $199, sometimes you can get it cheaper.

2DS $150-$170

WOW at most a $40 saving holy shit... I couldn't afford it before, but now I can!

What a deal!

Seriously, the price isn't even big enough to give a fuck about, if it was $99 I might have cared.

So... what you're getting at is that Aussies are getting screwed? This is nothing new and definitely not localized to the 3ds/2ds discussion.

No need to be sarcastic. A $40 price difference is pretty substantial, and more people will jump in at the lower price point.

AGAIN, nobody said this is the product for you. It's another option. Clearly, you'd prefer a 3DS or an XL, and since the price difference is negligible to you, you should have no problem simply purchasing one.

It's a 20% permanent price drop. That's better than the Wii U got.

Unless I'm missing some magic dollar levels in Australia...

(I mean, I get that it isn't enough for you -- I'm just puzzled as to why releasing a budget model for 20% less is a bad thing.)

I waited for a redesigned DS, it was a good decision.

I waited for a redesigned PSP and it was a good decision.

I figured they would announce a new 3DS either cheaper or with more features and I was going to get one. Low and behold, no price drop and they removed features.

Hence my panties in a bunch.

It IS cheaper, regardless of what you think.

Also, what features would you like them to add in?

It's a side option for the 3DS, not a replacement or new model design. Just get a XL or og 3DS. We already got a price drop, and with this new 2D we prob won't see till next year or the one after.

Also "And all it loses is the ability to play stylus based games while placed on a table". What? All normal stylus games work..

Barely any games use a 2nd circle pad. Keep in mind their are no FPS games on the system.

The product concept makes sense to me. Due to manufacturing costs, Nintendo is not in a position to drop the price of the 3DS. Nor would Nintendo want to drop the price when the 3DS is doing very well in some territories and reasonably well in others. Yet there is plenty of reason to think that consumers love affordable Nintendo handhelds. With Nintendo realizing that the 3D feature is not important to most consumers, there was an obvious opportunity to create a value model. I think getting down to $99 would have made it an impulse buy for many parents hoping to distract children (and many adults who are generally wary of dedicated handheld gaming), but $129 is still pretty good. The biggest problems I see are consumer confusion (rampant with Nintendo products) and aesthetics. But then, I also don't have much of a head for business, so I can't even begin to assess the opportunity cost for this product that has required and will continue to require significant investment on Nintendo's part.

Well, I don't know if anyone's suggested it (I just got here & I'm not reading the whole thread), but my hunch is this is intended ... probably sometime after the Xmas holiday ... to replace the standard 3DS model. Then there'll be the budget model 2DS, and the premium model 3DS XL. Think about it.

I legitimately think this could've worked out better if they hadn't gone with 3DS XL size screens and just the OG 3DS sizes. Would've given it more battery, decreased the cost even more, and it would've especially been much smaller and would've looked more comfortable.

I won't judge it until I've held it in my hands or whatever though.

I think this is an amazing product for people who only play their 3DS's at home though!

That design is so damn strange, though if it takes off, then more power to Nintendo. Having a cheaper, less potentially eye-irritating option for those that want it is a nice gesture.

"Potentially less eye-irritating option."

You noticed the 3D Effect Slider, right?
You can also disable the 3D effect personally through Parental Controls.

If anything, the least "eye irritating" option for people with that complaint is the 3DS XL with the slider reduced to "off."

It feels like people that don't like the 3D effect for some reason are just screaming "Stop wanting what I don't want" to people who t works perfectly for. I would be far less likely to buy the successor to the 3DS if it didn't have the glasses-free 3D technology.

I got to say it is nice to have start and select as real buttons again.

You mean like on the XL?

It will be the top selling console by quite some margin.
Came here to echo this.

While it may not be the sexiest thing to look at, us here at GAF tend to forget the other millions of potential customers of this thing who don't give a shit what a handheld look like so long as it plays the newest 3DS games and is cheaper.

If Sears catalog still existed, kids would be circling the hell out of this for this Christmas.

Player move by Nintendo.

Screens are OG size and the battery is inbetween the OG and the XL

I doubt it. This is specifically to target the west where Nintendo thinks it can gain additional traction with a younger crowd. I don't think there is any Japanese release plan.

Sucks for Australia. Here in New Zealand the 3DS and XL are $300, so at $180 the 2DS is almost half price!

Alright I've had time to think about this and read other posts after embracing the 'knee-jerk' reaction a few hours prior. Surprisingly, my opinion does not differ much:

The Pros:
• Incredibly smart marketing move to release a cheap alternative with Pokémon X/Y. Kids will be all over it because it's new; parents will be all over it because it's cheap. Most here don't disagree with this.

• There are no hinges to break and parents don't have to dig through system settings and remember passwords to have 3D disabled. Convenient.

• I prefer the color balance they have on this. We see more of the Black or White and the secondary color is now a subtler accent. The Black and Red one even resembles a PokéDex in some shots (though the IRL version will be much darker and less vibrant).

• It's a better value than the OG ever was (or will be). You're only losing speaker quality and ergonomics (though compared to the OG that isn't saying much). The 2DS is bundled with a 4GB SD card, better buttons, bigger stylus, more battery life, a reinforced headphone port, and (I asume) a matte finish. OS seems improved as well.

The Cons:

• It doesn't appear to be very well designed. The buttons are more spaced out and have moved further away from the touchscreen. Younger kids with smaller hands may have difficultly playing certain games.

• Removing hinges doesn't get rid of 'screen scratching'. It just dodges a problem Nintendo created for themselves. Now consumers will have to worry about spills, steps, drops, and scratching the screen themselves - things the clam-shell design minimized. I personally buy screen protectors for all my tech anyway.

• Obviously this will create brand confusion, and that isn't something a large sticker on the box alone is going to solve. Nintendo will need to step up their marketing campaign if this thing is to be a success. Consumers need to know that this is a 'slim' version of their 3DS that plays the same games minus the 3D, and not a brand new system on its own (something that'll be difficult to do without the clam-shell similarity).

• Most of us don't wear cargo shorts all the time...

The Verdict:

Releasing the system itself is a good idea. It seems like people here feel 'cheated' that the latest redesign isn't as good as it ought to be, but I don't think that's the core issue. What we really need to focus on is whether this will actually help Nintendo, or just create additional problems for them. Will this increase their install base and return some of the money they lost on the Wii U, or will it further confuse consumers?

Also, the Pokémon X/Y games are introducing 3D to the franchise, and there are special edition 3DS XL's to go along with the game. Will they be bundling special edition 2DS' with the game as well? It'd be interesting to see how Nintendo displays the bundles - one with 3D and one without. It'd also be interesting to see where Nintendo takes 3D gaming in the future, or if they just scrap it entirely with their next brand new handheld.

As for the rest of us - owners of 3DS's or not - we shouldn't over analyze this. We wont experience the problems that kids owning the 2DS might, so this may actually be a more attractive buy for adults who just aren't interested in the 3D. I also don't think it's "ugly" necessarily, and I'll probably buy one of the special editions sometime in the future for keepsake. However, it certainly wouldn't replace my 3DS XL as my main handheld (especially after all the work I did to customize mine), and I wouldn't consider taking this outside with me. If anything, it'll be something I own to let little kids play with when they visit instead of letting them use my XL.

The 'mobs' really ought to tone it down - pro 2DS and anti 2DS alike. Part of online forums is discussion and feedback, and at a certain point a "joke" (nicer version) stops being a joke and these 'consensus' threads just take turns for the worst.
A friend gave me the idea. Could not resist:

Not that Nintendo memes aren't amusing.

Sure, but that was before white became a popular hardware color for things. Nowadays all I ever see are white iPhones and majority white android phones and whatever. Anecdotal, but still!

They should try again!
You are familiar with the Wii U, right? The Basic model?

this thing is awful I don't even know how is one supposed to hold it with the shoulder buttons up there holy shit what were they thinking and still no second stick can only be a sick joke :|

Like I said, I'd rather they release a revision with a better battery and possibly a slightly sleeker look with a matte finish (still same as the OG size). This thing would have been fine if it was the clamshell.

Here's the secret: if you're posting on NeoGAF, there's a good chance the 2DS is not remotely aimed at you.
