MS just couldnt have been ready for sonys announcement, they got blindsided and have been and are scrambling since.

Its like they are doing a soft launch, followed by a hard one.

I also have no idea how this thing is going to be able to understand people from north jersey vs. north dakota vs. louisianna, I kant and Im a human.

good luck dealing with a thik foriegn akent

I never owned a Kinect, but I have had to put on a fake American accent to deal with automated telephone systems in the US.

Anyone here do that to make Kinect work better on the 360?

I would absolutely love videos of this if this is becomes a thing.

Aren't they like the worlds biggest software company, with a near limitless supply of engineers and indian testers and tweakers?
Man, i remember voice command stuff coming out 20 years ago, and its still nowhere near cracked.

No company has it anywhere closed to being cracked, and honestly, MS is pretty far behind Google on it.

hard to believe that a software company asbig as MS with localized products all over the world is doing this mess. Reminds me of former sony with their huge corporation and sections each doing their own thing

Most Irish accents are pretty neutral, it's just select places that are the extreme. Perchance UK actually includes Ireland? Wouldn't be the first time

I'm not sure.. when they listed the countries it was releasing in, wasn't Ireland and the UK listed separately?

Still though you do have a point, it's a fairly common (and stupid) thing to do by listing Ireland as part of the UK. Although we'll not go in to that argument. lol

UK has so many accents in it too that it's seems daft not to have Ireland.

I mean just in a few mile radius around me I have Sand Dancers, Mackems and Geordies and voice recognition is always fun.
You are making the assumption that it will work with most UK accents. I don't think that assumption is justified based on MS's history. You'd probably be lucky if it works with 2-3 at best.

This is my thought as well, unless I am missing something.
There was another thing here, in terms of getting media deals completed in time for launch but I'm expecting media deals to also be trash or non-existent at launch for anyone other than those 5. I guess we'll see. We're down to 2/3 now.

How ,exactly, is a lack of voice support indicative of supply issues? Seems like the countries are still getting the box.
Microsoft cited localisation of Kinect functionality as one of the major reasons for X1's launch being scaled down. These news remove further credence to that excuse. This leaves supply issues, and/or media licensing, but the later is also looking increasingly doubtful.

Wrong English.

Sorry Mates,

Kinect just isn't good enough tech for your country..

After all that has gone done this year it really seems like Microsoft wanted to launch the Xbox One in 2014 and the competition forced its hand early.

Launch volumes are not really an issue. This was simply a software issue in terms of getting local language and voice support in the dash. it's pretty straightforward, but disappointing I know for people who are missing launch.

Obviously, I support people waiting for the official supported launch in the affected markets for the best experience ;)
.

Before February they must have had a holiday 2014 release schedule. The more details come out, the surer I am they were working overnight for 6 months now to at least build anything. Crazy MS.

So they delayed the launch of many countries because of language support but yet can clearly only support five countries?

Probably been said before ... but what?

Microsoft have been remarkably consistent in their incompetence across all areas of their business over the last few years, but it really feels like they've stepped up their game with the launch of the Xbox One. It's been a quite dazzling display of ineptitude so far and I'm constantly on tenterhooks for the next piece of news. Very entertaining. :)

This is a funny coincidence:

They're having production issues because a very trustworthy insider said it and it was confirmed by them after they reduced the launch countries.
And we have a Microsoft employee stating the exact opposite. Who you believe is your choice.
You mean you'll take MS's PR over anyone else, right?
Oh please.

This is exactly the problem. Anything anyone from Microsoft claims is immediately shot down and ripped apart without any substance.

This is the discussion I had with Opus just a few hours ago. I kind of feel bad for the people who want to believe Microsoft's bullshit excuses, they have been disappointed repeatedly the last few months.

The only way this could be more hilarious is if Microsoft has followed Apple and Siri's path and required it to connect to a server for "understanding" purposes.

Just another voice command system where I can't allow myself to become tired and fall back to my native brogue when I scream at a computer.

Same thing that Apple did with Siri.

I doubt voice controls will ever become popular.

They will when they become good and effortless to most everyone. Not that I expect as such any time soon, but in the mean time we could still get more games like Seaman and Odama. I demand more Pinball RTS which allows me to scream at troops.

it's funny how if you believe one thing, everything you hear after that only reinforces it. because there's no other possible explanation, ever.

as someone who is excited for xbox 1, this is the problem with the selling point of the system being voice commanding...english isnt the only language lol

This seems a silly way to roll this out. Why not just allow voice commands in all territories at launch; but just limit it for the languages that you can support out of the gate? I am not sure; but this language/translation BS seems to be convenient scapegoat for their manufacturing constraints despite their claims to the contrary?

As an Asian, the excuse given by MS for the culling of launch countries over localisation issues is utterly hilarious, because MS has never cared to support Asian languages, much less the dozens of accents here throughout the entirety of 360's lifespan.

And I honestly expect that that they'll not localise our languages into Kinect even into the next 5 years.

And of course this information is in the small print, hoping people from the affected regions don't notice.

Also it works in the UK which means it works in Northern Ireland but the Republic of Ireland isn't listed?

IMO a Dublin accent is a lot more neutral than geordie or scouse accent, so this makes no sense at all. Not that I care, ill never be getting one

They gotta program all those accents in. I think that was the excuse they gave, wasn't it?

Which means they must have Boston accents in...and NY accents....and CA accents....and even the non-accents here in Mass.

I hate to break it to you, but you have an accent.

Don't they have a decent Australian voice recognition working on their windows 8 phones and computers...
Surely that tech is somewhat transferrable.

Also what happened to reduced country launch was because of 'voice issues' and not supply. They changing that too?

What next? Down to 3 countries that can use the controller?

Only the US will get launch day games. Their China factories explode the day before release. Their ships malfunction.

Seriously it's shit like this that makes everyone treat the xbox like a joke.

Wow! With such importance placed on the abilities for Kinect, this does not seem like a great way to roll-out. I guess more countries to be added to tier 2?

You're losing me here. The 5 countries getting voice support blurb does not mean any less HARDWARE is rolling out. Sounds like localization issues to me.
Albert claimed that the only issues causing the delay were language and voice support. Now we find out that 8 of the 13 countries it is launching in don't even have voice support. This begs the question: why couldn't they launch in the delayed countries then?

Its OK everyone outside of these countries. I have heard that Kinect still picks up the middle finger which luckily is universal

Come on you guys, look at it from MS point of view: by now we all should be speaking american.*

This.
How is that hard to get?

So I guess the console will only be released in these countries after all? Because you know, it got delayed to 2014 in 8 of the original 21 countries because of localization issues.

Ok, I see. He'll have to answer that I guess. Maybe they're closer to implementation in those 8 countries than the rest.

No, because if Microsoft is prepared to launch in 8 countries without voice support, they can't hide behind lack of voice support for delaying the launch in a further eight countries. This adds a ton more plausibility to the supply problem theory.

If you are in a North Ireland locale it will probably be unlocked as a UK region. That doesn't mean it will be able to understand you.
