Rom Hacks that Improve the Experience (not level edits)

Pokemon Prism would be my choice.

A hack of Pokemon Gold with new maps, story, character customisation, mining and other skills, sidescrolling sections, releasing pokemon and controlling them (mystery dungeon style) and more that I can't remember.

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=EIioXzPnWqM

Edit 1: Oh and mingames and housing system and running shoes.

Edit 2: and new types of pokemon, and newer generations of pokemon.

(Pokemon Brown does similar stuff, replacing all the misaingno's with real pokemon )

Hm. I played both of those Metroid hacks (and linked to it in another thread not too long ago). Good stuff. Didn't know about colorized Pokemon Red. Nice. Perfect for people who can't abide by the stuff that got changed/added for the 3rd generation and beyond (don't laugh... they exist!). I haven't looked too far into it: is the hack only cosmetic or did they introduce Gold/Silver/Crystal balance changes like split Special/Special Defense?

Would something as simple as a simple font change suffice for this thread? I remember Aeana posting several instances where she changed a (usually GBA) game's font to something easier on the eyes.

Though I guess when it comes to fonts whether they're good or bad can be pretty subjective. She says they're just for personal use... but I don't know, maybe they should go up on Romhacking.net or something. Some of them are pretty good (rocking the FF5a one now, actually).

Oh, is it finished? He's been working on that since forever ago. Did he finally get that intro working?

Pretty much - the latest patch has almost everything. He was still deciding on the final music for it over at RH last time I checked(intro is in beta), but that was a few months back.

The latest one I've enjoyed is the hack for mega man x3 that lets you play as zero for the whole game. Search mega man x3 project zero on Google. I'm on my phone now so can't post pics but it is fantastic.

Sweet. You should post that in this thread.

Does anyone know why we didn't get any creative ROM hacks for PSone games? At least with N64 the z-buffer went a long way when it came to modding.

Seemed very minor but Lufia I and II have some small translation fixes + uncensors, I think they censored some crosses and bunny girls, maybe some alcohol references in the NA versions.
Oh yeah, the Terranigma NTSC patch is a must.

This thread is useful for finding fan mods or fixes for a bunch of games. Thanks for making it op.

Also I want to bring up the Casltevania 2 hack/mod for the NES/Famicom Disk system, from what I've read about it it makes the game less of a slog.

I really like these two:

Final Fantasy Tactics LFT - http://www.rpgdl.com/lft

Basically a rebalance of FFT with the goal of making every class useful and making the game more playable. Skills are moved around, every class has innate gained JP up to decrease grinding, stats are changed, etc. Some of my favourite changes: Archers now have innate Ignore Height, Knight Break skills now hit at 100%, Thieves have innate Two Swords, etc. I really recommend this for any fan of FFT.

Final Fantasy V - Ancient Cave - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4t6nDOVBAk

Named after Lufia 2, this hack takes FF5 and turns it into a roguelike. Everything, including jobs, is found in chests and randomized. The game mechanics and skills remain the same but each run is wildly different thanks to the different skills you may find. Finding White Mage is super valuable but only if you also find Cure in a chest!

Wish there were more GBA palette/color hacks. Not just for SNES ports but for any GBA title that could look a lot better without being "optimized" for the non-backlit original hardware.

Here's one for Castlevania Harmony of Dissonance that gets rid of the obnoxious glowing outline from the character. Still doesn't alter the bright washed out palette though. I think games like the Castlevania or Mega Man Zero series could benefit greatly from improved palettes that aren't bottlenecked by all the brightness.

There's been plenty of palette hacks for Genesis titles recently as well. So many ports were so shoddily handled you'd think they just ran it through some automated palette converter algorithm without any human oversight.

Great. Now if they replace the Yoshi's Story cries with the SNES sfx, it should be perfect.

I could give that a go later.

Edit: I'm bored. I'll try it now. Hang on.

Edit: disabled the sound effects, but unable to get the format right for replacing them. Will try again later.

This thread really shoudn't have gone two years without a bump. Great stuff here, but this one below in particular sounds ridiculously amazing for a roguelike AND classic FF fan like myself:

Edit: Aw, I thought it would be a deeper hack (limited enemies or stamina, etc). Not really a fan of keeping the unlimited random encounters and simply adding a time limit. Ah well!

That Pokémon red looks pretty (video not working btw). That makes me want to play this again, but idk if I really want to do that on PC/phone

You should give it a try - the combinations that you get can be weirdly entertaining. It's not perfect but it's a fun little experiment.

play it on an actual handheld then. You can play it on the real hardware via an everdrive, on a DS, GBA or even a Wii, Wii U, 3DS or PSP via homebrew.

Travesty that FFVI Brave New World hasn't been posted yet. Complete overhaul of the broken stats system and magic system as well as a reworking of mob encounters and AI. Makes it a much better balanced and interesting game combat-wise, actually requiring you to manage buffs beyond the standard shell/reflect combo and think about equipment choices for stats rather than a straight linear progression and basic elemental affinities.

There's a good patch for Streets of Rage 3 which brings it more in line with the Japanese version Bare Knuckle 3. It fixes the difficulty levels which were badly changed for the west and adds back the more colourful pallets for the characters.

I think it's strange there are no hacks for Super Mario Land 2. It being my first Mario game I always dreamt of Yoshi in Super Mario Land 2 or a level editor for that game. Sadly, no one seems to be interested in SML2 in the hacking community.

Someone released a hack for Mario Advance 2 where they removed the voices for Mario and Luigi.

http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/2564/

I'm kind of surprised nobody has made hacks for Mario Advance 1 & 4 where they try to make the graphics and sounds more in line of the NES versions, rather than the All-Stars version. 8-bit graphics and similar sounds to boot.
I know both games have new content like the mecha-birdo boss and e-reader levels, but can't hurt to try.

I was gonna say... has someone created a hack of Advance 4 with color correction and all the e-reader content more easily available? That would be cool.

Also, my dream hack: Super Mario Bros Deluxe with a zoomed out camera. ugh. regular version is unplayable to me because it's so zoomed in.

Hm, Neil's Metroid Lua page has been down since forever ago. Anyone have a working mirror for those who might wish to try it out? Romhacking.net doesn't host it (probably because it's a script and not a patch?).

EDIT: oh, here's a mirror of the file

It's a good hack, just limited by the fact that it's a Lua script and thus only usable only a select few emulators (well, only 1 the last time I checked). I prefer snarfblam's Metroid + Saving hack myself, linked earlier in the thread.

EDIT: should probably post other quality-of-life hacks I'm familiar with:

Ninja Gaiden III Restored - english version of NGIII that reverts the game to the way it was in the JPN version, including a working password system.

Contra Hard Corps M.I.J.E.T. Enhancement - cleans up the script and adds some user-friendly features
Contra Hard Corps Hit Points Restoration - restores the life bar from the Japanese version (a.k.a. Easy-er Mode) + other goodies. Can be applied in conjunction with the M.I.J.E.T. patch.

Phantasy Star II has a few hacks that try to improve the game by removing the endless grinding and fixing bugs present in the original game. Of these, Phantasy Star II Modernization Hack seems the most promising: 2x Exp/Meseta gained from battles, re-balanced character stats and what equipment they can use that gives them greater utility especially near end-game and other changes. It's also still being worked on unlike some other hacks. Now if only someone can come up with a working 'speed up walking' patch, which is really the only thing the Phantasy Star Collection version has over any of these patches.

I'm also aware of a Secret of Mana hack that's attempting something very advanced: changing gameplay mechanics to allow for things like binding spell-casting to specific buttons, better partner A.I., giving magic a recharge time like when using a melee weapon (fixes the one thing that's broken about magic casting in the game), variable attack strength (think Smash attacks), manual blocking and dodging and other stuff. Check it out if you're interesting, could be something amazing if and when it's ever finished.

It's been a long time since I've played either the SNES or GBA versions. Did the GBA version even add anything substantial to the game?

There is a patch to swap the A and B buttons for the Gamecube Megaman Collection, which for some reason were the wrong way around, and there was no option to swap them i the game.

Lufia 2 has a patch that fixes a major nearly game-ending bug in the NA version. I say nearly because with enough patience, you can get past it, but most people never figured it out.

If only someone could go all out and fix the awful color palette and Game Boy-quality sound in Harmony. The game probably isn't as good as Aria of Sorrow or even Circle of the Moon, but it's so jarring and unpleasant the way it is.

I'm glad someone else liked the ones I posted! I've done a loooot over the years, for various systems up to and including the DS. Too many. I'm just too picky. :\

Someday I'll finish and release this one:

Proper casing patch for the Sega CD Lunar games, so they aren't entirely in upper-case like they were originally.

Most notable would be one extra level for each world .
In SMW GBA the game had no slowdown at all. Luigi had his unique attributes (and you could use him as P1), dragon coins were added in castles and mansion stages.
SMB3 had a bunch of exta levels and new (old) items like the SMW cape. However, they were locked behind that e-reader thingy.
All of them are generally easier, too.
