Rom Hacks that Improve the Experience (not level edits)

My #1 and #2 answers are Ms. Pac Man with speed hack.

It's the only version of Pac Man that I care to play.

The DX stuff is fine, but I have this as my preference yet.

One of my favorite hacks was a fairly simple patch (really could be done as a AR/Gameshark code) to Donkey Kong Country Returns that did two things: allow the Classic Controller to be used, and moved rolling off of a waggle motion and onto the R button. Two things that drove me nuts about the game, completely removed and fixed. Increased my enjoyment of the game ten-fold.

I'd have to say Tecmo Super Bowl 2014. These guys have been updating this game every year for the last 7 years

Do you know 65816 ASM?

If not, then I'm sorry to say that savestates are the best you're going to get.

Is that how the FF6 save anywhere hack was made? I was going to base it on the method used to make that one.

Edit

Please correct me if im am wrong, but the FF6 hack would have required the source, if what you are saying is true. I doubt the person involved in that hack had the source for FF6.

Uh no. If you want to hack something, you pinpoint the data using a tracer or a corrupter. How else do you think stuff like Lunar Magic was made?

lunartnew.gif

SMW has been completely and utterly disassembled. Every single bit of data has been mapped out. No one ever had the source code for it - like all hacking, it's done via pure trial+error and careful searching.

If you want to hack FF6, load it up on SNES9x with Geiger's tracer, study what the game writes and reads to the console/emulator and use the information from those commands to help you. You'll need to discover how the compression format used by Square in the game works too, and you'll need to code ASM routines to get the new save format working.

Basically, if you know nothing about rom hacking, you are not going to be able to do it. Prepare to study for years.

The Tengen Ms Pacman on the Genesis is the best version I have found. It has special stages, a Pac Boost, crazy difficulty settings. It's great.

Or i can possibly find a PAR code and use a hexeditor to change the rom..

Just like the guy did for the FF6 hack. All without years of study or developing a condescending attitude. ;)

Sorry, I'm just trying to help. I may have slightly misunderstood your request - not being a big FF6 fan, I assumed you meant adding in a save function that wasn't previously in the game.

If it's a simple case of flipping a switch (ie. it restricts the save anywhere in certain locations), then that's a simple thing to find, and I could even do it for you. If you want a bit of experience with it, try finding the PAR code yourself - simply convert it to hex afterwards and try changing the values.

Castlevania II: Redaction. Exactly the same game. No difficulty changes or new areas and visuals. Just speeds up the day/night transition text, speeds up text in general, fixes missing text & incomprehensible/misleading translations.

Most of my favorites have been posted, but I will mention MIJET's work: http://mijet.eludevisibility.org/

Besides their excellent translations, they made nice enhancement patches. The "no-shuriken" mode in the Shinobi III patch is my favorite part of their enhancements.

I find myself wishing there were some simple "always run" hacks (like in Control Freak for SM) for the Mario games and games where you double tap to run (Kirby series, Shinobi III). I feel that with those games I always want to be running and having walking be the default state is a slight nuisance.

A Knuckles Chaotix redesign hack that let you select characters normally, removed the rubber band gimmick and added more life to stages (they feel a bit empty and would need some redesigning to work without the rubber band) would be interesting too.

Some of my favorites are Sonic Classic Heroes, customizeable versions of Sonic 1 and 2 that adds saves, shields, and all 3 characters, 2 players and lets any player switch characters on the fly.

For the Frogs The Bells Toll on Gameboy (English translation) has the same engine that would later be used in Link's Awakening. Fun game where you switch between a person and a frog.

Super Mario Land Color is also great.

So, in the classic Pokemon thread, I've been showing off this absolutely incredible hack of Pokemon Red that converts the game into a full Game Boy Colour game, complete with updated graphics:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3tAlAbfTqw

I've flashed it onto a spare GBC cart I have lying around, and it's a joy to play on the handheld - even to the point where it makes my Pokemon Red retail cart absolutely redundant. It improves the experience that much.

So, what other hacks are there that improve the experience? I'm not talking about major level edits or anything like that - UI, Graphical, Audio or control modifications that improve the game.

Anyone got any? I've got a few more in mind, but I'll let you guys go first. And for the sake of getting more replies, PC games are fair game too.

Wow this is excellent, I had no idea this was made, one of my favorite games ever too. I have a GB/GBC flash cartridge, someone in the official thread for that hack said it messed up his Gameboy Color screen and now everything he plays is blurry. Did you have any issues when you ran the game?

No issues whatsoever. Played on a combination of GBC and my GBA SP AGS-101. As always, use hacks with caution. I flashed the copy onto an eeprom I had spare and soldered it into a real GBC cart. If you're using a flashcart, it may result in totally different results to myself as I was essentially using real hardware.

I personally cannot see how a game could affect a console permanently like that - I'm more inclined to believe that it was due to a flashcart/dodgy soldering job that fried it with an incorrect voltage.

I'm surprised that there's absolutely no hack for Yu-gi-oh GBC/GBA to add new content.

Looked everywhere and there's nothing :/

I really love this sorta stuff, being able to play BS Zelda completely was a dream come true. :) I dunno how the awesome people that do them do it but I'm happy they do!

Sonic Megamix too, so good.

Was always disappointed there weren't really any DuckTales NES hacks though (I don't think?). There's like DickTales and stuff but... yeah lol.

There's another Metroid romhack out there that adds saving, a map, and the ability to combine the Ice and Wave beams together. Unlike Neill Corlett's admittedly awesome hack, this one does not rely on LUA files so you can use it on real hardware providing you have the means to flash your personally ripped ROM file. :p

Now that is even more impressive. And here I am playing on an emulator like a mug.

No one posted this gem yet?

Extra Mario Bros.

Turns SMB1 into an open world Metroid game complete with new powerups and upgrades as well as music from Super Metroid. Easily the best SMB1 romhack in my opinion.

Also that's a cool Pokemon hack. I do have a GB flashcart. Wonder if it would work on that. I'll have to try it out one day.

Thanks for the information, will give this a shot later.

This, this, so much this. The game is still pretty terrible, but this makes it a billion times more bearable.

Pokemon Sacred Gold & Storm Silver. Its a hack of Heartgold/Soulsilver with a harder difficulty level, the ability to catch all pokemon available in one game, and a bunch of other neat features like new custom events, GB Sounds from the beginning, and Dreamworld abilities.

http://gbatemp.net/threads/pokémon-sacred-gold-storm-silver.327567/

What I like best about it is that SG/SS has a much more satisfying level curve than the original. The basic Johto games are pretty much unplayable to me now.

His VWF and re-translation patch for Secret of Mana is also pretty decent, but I can understand why some don't like it:

http://fusoya.eludevisibility.org/som/graphics/mana2.gif[img]
I'd rebuy retranslated Secret of Mana on every possible platform if S-E just let me :(

Will second place suffice? ;)
There's an amazing Metroid hack that adds a map and equipable upgrades I think.

Haven't tríed it though

Ah yes LUA
Third, technically.

It's not exactly a ROM hack, but there's a Lua script for Metroid on the NES that adds in an automap.
That said, to his credit, he's the first to link the damn thing.

Can you play these on an emulator or do you need a flash cart or something? If so, where can I get those?

Found a hack for HD textures for Super Smash Bros 64.

Used it on my old HTC Raider. Made it lag like hell with anything more than one computer, and didn't work with all of them, but still made the game much less of an eyesore on a 1280x800 4.6" screen.

I gotta reinstall N64oid on my phone and see if it plays the game any better.

I decided to try out that Breath of Fire 2 retranslation patch. I just watched the intro and its amazing that somebody figured out how to hack in a song like that. The rom checkup at the beginning is a neat touch, too.

My favorite is Pussy City Pimps (modified River City Ransom). It alters the game's ludodiegetic fibre, and as a result the game becomes something More.

What the hell guys, I thought I'd let someone else mention this one but no one has yet!
I posted what in my opinion is the best SMB1 hack before. Well here's the best SMB3 hack.

Mario Adventure

Lots of improvements to the gameplay like some new mechanics, new powerups, a slot for saving an item a la SMW and tons of crazy levels.

It didn't for a long time, but now it works on real hardware with the PowerPak flashcart if you apply an extra patch, and by loading an empty .sav file with the rom. It's very hard though. Brutally so sometimes. So if playing on PowerPak be sure to get the savestate mappers so you can have savestates.

Edit: ah never mind I'm confused. I thought this thread was about hacks that are more than simple level edits in general, but I see now that it's actually about hacks that simply improve the standard game... So disregard both of my posts I guess, but the hacks are definitely worth checking out anyway!
