Sega Sammy wants Atlus to make some IOS/Smartphone games too.

According to the article.

No it obviously means they only want Atlus to make phone games, gaming is over.

Calm the fuck down people.

Pretty much. What the hell is going on? Did Sega suddenly pee on people?

Atlus doesn't make games for Japan, they make them for a worldwide audience now. If you really think any mainline Persona or SMT game isn't coming to your territory, you're insane. Do you really think they bought the company and are going through the trouble to sort out the goddamn mess it is just so they can make stuff in one place?

Called this months ago

Idk why people wanted Gungho to buy them.

GameArts haven't done much have they lately? Also WHERE IS MY GRANDIA IV?

Because Gungho won't be doing anything to Atlus USA. But with Sega running things they might not even exist.

Other way around, SEGA Sammy is the parent company. SEGA and Sammy respectively are subsidiaries. Index/Altus will become another subsidiary, but has a chance of being a known entity within the company instead of being absorbed by SEGA.

A very good chance. People need to look at this process with some logic instead of just flipping out.

Atlus itself -- not Index as a whole, but the consumer games development division that we're talking about here -- is a consistently profitable enterprise. The listed sale price is $141m in US dollars -- a price that would be quite excessive simply to pick up a couple IPs whose value is heavily invested in their current, dedicated-niche-fanbase manifestation. Sammy also bought Atlus over a variety of other bidders, after Index specifically talked about looking for a buyer who would maintain some continuity in the operation.

Paying that kind of money to just loot the corpse and turn currently profitable IPs into mobile waste dumps would be quite pointless when, as it stands, they can buy Atlus, let them remain profitable doing what they already do, and also exploit them via sleazy mobile titles and so on.

Atlus USA is definitely the bigger concern here.

It would probably make more sense for Sega to actually dissolve Sega USA and then rename Atlus USA the new "Sega USA."

from what my superpowered gerbil brain can understand, sega sammy owns sega corp and whatever atlus was (index digital media? i dunno). sega and atlus are both their own things in a bigger corporation.

however you would think it would make sense to not have two american publishing branches, where two development branches is okay.

if this happens, then i think sega usa will stay sega usa and only some people from atlus usa will make the transition.

Specifically, it says Sega Sammy wants to use Atlus's assets effectively, including (but not limited to) Smartphone games.

Which article are you getting that quote from? I do not see it in the Nikkei article, and I'd like to see it.

I found a leaked (or should I say leeked) screenshot of Persona 5:

Aigis to guest star in future Project Diva titles. (Which disturbingly is not as far fetched as I make it sound....)

Also, you need to be registered on the site for the full article, which might be why some of you couldn't see the sentence about Smartphones.

To be fair, they also say they're aiming to revitalise Index's home console business as well.

Oh for christ's sake, they didn't do VC3 because the 2nd one dive bombed, deal with it

You got 5 goddamn Yakuza games when you really only deserved one after the sales that one got (I blame the dub for that though).

Shit, you got Dead Souls for crying out loud! The only thing you could maybe get mad about is Kenzan.

So that's TWO titles.

But no, Segata Sanshiro is going to fucking judo throw everyone at Atlus USA into oblivion because they only bought Atlus to make games for Japan :p

Sega has...well lets say I agree with you but for some reason they appear to be more likely to be a company that only cares about larger %$ gains.

This is probably good for SMT x Fire Emblem... but it makes me fear for all of Atlus' other games. I won't be surprised if Devil Survivor 2 Break Record isn't localized...

I think we're all a little scared about whats going to happen.

Can someone confirm this? At work and no access.,...but this has me scared....*

Persona 5 iOS/Android release 2014!

and I think I might just quit gaming. Perhaps.

Holy shit, you actually think P5 might not come out in the US now? Get a grip.

Given Sega's track record toward their own niche titles? I don't blame him for that line of thinking.

Before going for a "doomed" post, can someone here tell me the difference between Sega Corp and Sega Sammy? Afaik, they are two different companies right?

Sega Sammy Holdings is the parent company formed by the merger of Sega and Sammy. Sega Corp is a subsidiary of that, and the one everyone thinks is coming to rape their Personas and MegaTens and whatever.

There is every possibility that Atlus will become another subsidiary separate from Sega and mostly left to do their own thing, but that doesn't really suit the doomsday narrative.

I am trying my hardest to be optimistic here. Atlus is one of my favorite gaming companies. I guess I have to wait for details on the restructuring and what, if any, changes will happen in areas like localization >_<

This is torture :(

What if the fantasy is to become a reality?

Considering the site says you need to register to see the full article... no way to confirm that as of yet.

I'm never going to buy a Sega game again and now I think I have to buy every Atlus game ever made before Sega throws them into the Arizona desert and buries them.

So does this restructuring bode badly for seeing P5 at TGS? Maybe we'll get P5 released around the same time FFXV gets released? .__.

Yeah I see it now. Completely missed that part. Hopefully we can find out the full details soon.

Regardless, Atlus already did a lot of mobile game stuff around the time of P2 and P3, so this might be a blessing...

To make effective use of Index's (Atlus's) assets...Sega Sammy is thinking about expanding them into smartphone games.

This doesn't necessarily mean that they're going to stop making games for consoles / handhelds, and it doesn't mean that development on Persona 5 is going to stop.
