This part is pretty hokey. Especially since my left attack was set to INS and my right attack was set to F.

What is it in the PS version as well?

Anyone having any weird audio issues with the Tifa's bootleg package installed? I'm just using the Anxious Heart package in the bootleg, and then selecting the enhanced soundtrack in the FF7Music installer.

Music sometimes cuts out and won't come back. Sound effects play though my USB headset, while music plays through my speakers even though I disable my internal soundcard because I want to listen to the audio on my headset. Really weird stuff.

FFVIII probably takes little to no work to for SquareEnix. Before I rebuilt my computer I ripped my FFVIII discs and had started replaying it earlier this year and it works right out of the box. Took some effort to get a gamepad properly working, but otherwise I had no issues.

They spent most of their time implementing that online system, launcher, and DRM for the square store.

What a joke.

Square-Enix has literally missed the point in the last 6 years or so.

What the fuck is wrong with you SE?

Just being one of the worst-run companies in video games, and that is difficult to do.

So bad that the GM of Eidos just quits citing bad business practices.

The only thing I hate is that this runs in 4:3. I wish it also was in 16:9 and 16:10.

Would stretch the backgrounds unnaturally because of the upscale.

Of course, there are methods to upscale images that won't adversely affect the image quality too much. Square just chose not to implement them.

It's fun to replay this game after several years. There's so much I've forgotten, and yet a lot that I still know how to do. It's also fun to see just how strange this game is compared to newer games.

I mean from the start and to where I am now, I've played Donkey Kong, except I was the one throwing the barrels, fought an evil house, visited a brothel, dressed the main character up as a girl, threatened to rip a pimp's genitalia off, then fought his pet sewer alligator, met a talking dog and recruited him to my party, and played a motorcycle minigame. And that's all before even seeing the World Map. And all of it was played completely straight.

They just don't make games like this anymore. I don't think Square-Enix would even be capable of making a Final Fantasy VII remake as they are now. They don't get how to be weird in a fun way, like this game does. Not anymore at least. Plus the motorcycle chase would totally be a cutscene if FF7 was made today, not a minigame where you beat up motorcycle cops with a sword.

It sounds so much more awesome when you describe it like that.

Started replaying FF7. Out of Midgar, and just got Beta. Took a few tries because the darn snake kept throwing Cloud (Enemy Skill holder) out of the battle even when he was just defending.

Anybody know if you can use Locoweed to get Mighty Guard or White Wind? Not that I really need them before you get the Manip materia, the game is plenty easy anyway.

Hehee, can't help you with your question but I've been collecting my enemy skills too. Love this game...

Is there a perfect point for stopping and leveling up Aeris' Limit?

I might just make a separate save point and just come back to it later when I'm watching a TV series or something.

The best place for farming kills for limit breaks is in the caves after Midgar Zolom. You'll frequently encounter a group of 5 enemies that can all be killed with a simple, and MP cheap, Matra Magic enemy skill.

Any higher level area is fine for meeting the limit break use requirements. You just need to take damage. Use a Hyper to get your character in Fury status and equip them with Cover materia so they take more hits.

Once she forces herself into your party, I'd say it's time to start farming. Matra Magic E. Skill is useful for kill farming on low level enemies. Though this would've been better done straight out of Midgar, in the caves.

They're just as easy as they always were.

I disagree. In the PS version, you're presented with a single symbol, all differently colored, whereas here you have words you need to distinguish at rapid pace, all the same color and same length. It is much more difficult to keep pace.

Where do you get that enemy skill? I just got onto the barge for the second continent.

Matra Magic can be gotten immediately upon leaving Midgar. You encounter Motorcycle type enemies right before Kalm that can use it against you.

You don't NEED Matra Magic for this to work, it's just the most convenient.

The earliest place to get Matra Magic is right outside Midgar. There's a robot mech thing that uses it. Also has a good steal for Barret for that point in the game, which probably won't help you now but could be nice in a replay.

And that's a useful Enemy Skill for a lot of the early-game since it hits all enemies with non-elemental magic damage. It's generally not strong enough to kill most enemies, but when fighting groups the damage can add up nicely and it's easy on MP.

I've already missed it then, unless it shows up again.

You can go back to that point fairly easily, but you have to pay to stow away on the ship. And something else uses it around the point in the game you're at but I don't remember what it is.

I'd recommend just waiting until you get the party member that comes with a Manipulate materia. If you don't get the skill before then you can get it once you get map access again, because you'll want to revisit a couple older areas for some really, really good enemy skills that Manipulate allows you to get (Might Guard and White Wind).

Enemies around the Kalm area - Custom Sweepers. The skill will pop up again a few more times. You would normally have a chance to get Big Guard from the beach enemies near Costa Del Sol, but that requires an item from later in the game. Same with White Wind and Death Force. Not much can be learned at your current point.

Ugh. Part of the reason I never finish this game on replays is because it is so mindlessly easy.

Not going to go for a full on hardcore challenge run yet, but I think for the rest of this playthrough I am going to restrict myself to Command Materia only. So I can still have some fun with things like Steal and Enemy Skill.

Anybody know how to mod the game?

I moved my steam folder to the root of the C drive and have the game installed.
I made a "%Mods" folder in the FF7 folder and put Bootleg (and FF7GameConverter) inside of it. I also have a blank .iso mounted.

First, do I need to have Bootleg in the FF7 folder?

Second, I ran BFE and downloaded every mod in red. Now I just have a bunch of .jpgs and no clue where to put them.

Any idea what to do?

bfe needs to be in the folder with all the mods. the bootloader needs to be in the ff7 steam folder. what's the best preset so far?

FF7 just got an update on Steam. It now uses the Playstation soundtrack instead of that horrible thing it had originally. One-Winged Angel sings again! Unmodded, even.

Junior, please.
is it worth it? never played it, and pretty much never played any FF because I didn't own a ps1 or a ps2

I've heard many people say the game aged terribly

They're wrong, it's the best Final Fantasy game. Totally worth it. Play this, then VI and IX, and you've covered the best three games in the series.

It's definitely worth buying and playing. Whether you like it or not... that's up to you. I liked FF6, 8 and 10 more than 7 but I still enjoyed playing.

So many feels booting this game up the other day. I have bought it on PC twice now, once on PS1. I'd do it again.

Are the sprite mods worth it? I can't tell from the youtube videos if they make the game more or less bearable.

But I've been meaning to do another run at some point.

If you like JRPGs it's worth a playthrough. The gameplay has aged fine unless you just don't like traditional JRPGs with overworlds and stuff.

Should I play this on Steam or PS3: Which one is the better version?

Assuming you aren't using mods, about the same once you set up a controller. Has achievements on Steam if you care about that, and some text edits/fixes (mostly grammar).

Not really, mostly because modding the game well is a pain even with the bootleg app. It always breaks something for me even if whatever I'm trying to do is simple, like just using the upressed backgrounds. And most visual mods (especially the character ones) end up giving you an inconsistent look that's, IMO, worse than the vanilla game.

Fuck it, I bit.

Please let the controls not be a pain. I'm excited.

Please also bring me FFVIII and IX.

Or at least VIII.

The soundtrack update makes me much more excited about whenever I get around to my copy since I don't have to manually replace it now.

A FFVIII PC release might be in the cards since, like with VII, there's a pre-existing PC port that Squeenix can lazily dust off. Wouldn't hold my breath for IX, though, unfortunately :/

Controls are fine other than the fact they're full 8-way digital instead of analog. You'll definitely need to manually set up your controller and probably cross reference the original controls though, unless they fixed the defaults in an update.

That's what I assumed, thanks.

Even upressing the backgrounds can be tricky? That's the thing I was looking forward to most.
