This is probably more due to the Xbone architecture and the time (or lack thereof) to master it. I expect that next year's iteration will be more optimised and the difference to be less noticeable. The Digital Foundries videos are going to originate some amazing threads that's for sure.

The fact that the PS4 is more powerful and also easier to develop for just makes it a breeze to port things over apparently. I think that's the biggest takeaway here.

It's not just resolution, but a couple of things like bad perception from which they haven't fully recovered, price, weaker hardware, etc.

Also, while many people won't care or probably even be aware of the discrepancy in resolution, you can't underestimate bad PR and negative news nowadays. Information now travels faster and to more people than ever. Look how MS had to practically change their whole focus for next gen just because the word of mouth was too much for them to ignore.

This is anecdotal, but I have a friend that works for neversoft/activision. He said the XBONE version was better optimized than the PS4. Take it all with a grain of salt. I think he might just be a xbox loyalist but since he's actually worked on developing parts of the game it makes it hard to completely ignore.

But he's doing it from a position of strength. No negative rumors about the performance of the PS4 version and IGN saying it's 1080p.

The rumor and buzz is objectively good for Sony, so why not let it go? He also deferred to Activision, which is the smart thing to do.

To that point, Activision or IW not debunking this is the real story. If it weren't true, you'd think they'd get something out to defend their game.
