Weird. I can start the game up in offline mode just fine.

I just forced my connection offline while playing, too and nothing happened.

Must have just been a random glitch or something held over from the GFWL days,

Yeah it must be a bug. I can still play offline if I just start over from the main menu but for whatever reason it takes me back to the menu if it goes out while playing. Thankfully this game saves after entering every room.

Getting a General Protection Fault crash just after the cinematic where Scarecrow is introduced in AA.

Which is hilarious considering
the "game crash" hallucination from the second encounter with Scarecrow...

So I just bought AA again, but here's my reasoning. I want to go ahead and play it without GFWL. If my GFWL key is eventually made to be redeemable, I can probably sell it to someone else for $5 since the sale will be over and someone's bound to have missed it, so in the end it'll likely not really cost me anything, and I don't have to wait. I think that makes sense.

Works for me.

I have had no game crashes playing either game so far. I used to get the occasional crash back to desktop in Asylum once in a blue moon, so if it happens during this current play through i won't immediately jump to the GFWL borked it up conclusion.

Yes. You can go from regular to GOTY.

Achievements are borked though, some trigger in the GOTY game but some don't and it seems you cant earn them anymore.

For example I converted my save game from the vanilla AC and imported it Oct 20 @ 10.22 AM
It pinged the achievements at that time, however I couldn't earn the "pay your respects" despite my trying for a good 30 minutes. It was only in a new game when I managed to get it.

So it looks like the achievements you earned in the standard game, if they didn't carry over then you won't get them without starting a new game.

I haven't been able to read through the OP yet but I have a question. I have two Arkham City games in my library (Batman: Arkham City TM and Batman: Arkham City GOTY) one Arkham Asylum. I haven't touched them yet but I do plan on playing through them soon. Which Arkham City do I install?

Restart your Steam and you should have the GOTY version of Asylum.

Run the GOTY versions, the vanilla versions haven't been touched.

It is because you had purchased AA GOTY and AC Vanilla. Vanilla versions were upgraded to GOTY since those were the ones that were patched.

You are fine. All of this information, and more, is in the OP.

This roller coaster ride of patches makes me feel like I should have played the game before they do something and break it in some horrible way.

Needed a little more time in the oven.

I mentioned this earlier, but its ironic because they 'finished' work on this well before Bioshock 2 was finished.

Man, I had forgotten music stops playing in AC's "overworld" halfway through the game. How can this be on purpose?

Man, playing AA makes me appreciate AC so much more. The combat is amazing. Well, obviously it should be, being a sequel, but it's way more realized and fun to play, with a bigger amount of things to do while fighting.

EDIT: just noticed i started my post the same way jett started his. lol

They might be waiting for a response back from Microsoft to alleviate the key situation.

Hope MS would hurry it up. Bought both AA and AC(Colletors Edition) retail and have only played 10 min of AC due to cr@p GFWL(HATE IT!) SO DYING TO PLAY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Arkham City would've been a lot better if there were a lot more building to enter. It was a very empty open world game.

Is it crazy that I am super excited for Deus Ex: Directors Cut? Usually after I finish a game I look back and wish all these design decisions wouldve been different. And it's really refreshing to have a game that is going back and fixing most of those bad design decisions. Just wish they would have reworked the final level. The last mission enemies just kill the pace and overall feel of the game.

People seem to like comparing Arkham City to Zelda, and I think comparing to Zelda 1 this actually sorta makes sense given the freedom you had going all over the place there and the fact the only places to enter are either some single room areas or dungeons.

Patch just pushed for AC GOTY.

I don't think I got a patch today for that, although I guess it could have happened before one of the points I turned my PC off and I didn't notice. Steam really needs a manual check for patch button in each game's options in the library. Something that goes a lot faster than verifying the cache of a nearly 20gb game.

All you have to do is restart Steam or launch the game to check for a patch. The patch was probably just for the Mac version.

GFWL removed so far on:
  • Arkham Asylum
  • Arkham City
  • Bioshock 2
Is there any news on:
  • GTA 4
  • Fallout 3
  • Fuel (lol)

All we know so far

All we know so far is:

- Batman: Arkham Asylum and City are having GFWL replaced with Steamworks (with the GOTY flavours already at this point)
- BioShock 2 has had GFWL replaced with Steamworks
- Epic is discussing internally what to do with Bulletstorm
- Codemasters is removing GFWL from Dirt 3, while Dirt 2, F1 2010/2011, Fuel, and Operation Flashpoint: Red River "are being looked at"
- Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet is having GFWL removed (no word yet on whether Steamworks will replace it)
- GFWL is being removed from various Capcom games, but again we don't yet know if Steamworks will be put in its stead

Everything else is up in the air at this juncture.

Edit: Added sources.

Well yesterday I was getting General Protection Fault crashes in a very specific area just after the cutscene introducing Scarecrow in AA, today I somehow got past that point, ran through the first Scarecrow sequence, immediately after leaving the room when I was done I got another Fault crash >:|

This whole GFWL removal process seems pretty wonky so far. Never had these issues before.

This method worked for me using HxD Hex Editor with Arkham City. Beautiful! :)

[How to!] Use old GFWL savegame in Steamwork version
Backup C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\<userid>\200260\remote
Your GFWL savegame have your GFWL username as prefix.
<GFWLusername>-save#.sgd
Delete all files EXCLUDING these files: (remember the folder backup)
profile.bin and <GFWLusername>-save#.sgd
Open with a HEX editor the savefile you want <GFWLusername>-save#.sgd
Lets say Sharkiller-save0.sgd
Image Search Type HEX: 00 00 00 03 00
Image Select all the text BEFORE the searched text
Image And delete.
Save and remove your gfwl usename from the file. "save0.sgd"
Open the game and you have your working savegame there.

Some new posts from the Steam forums

If you are experiencing a launcher crash/ dx.dll missing error, please attempt to update your Direct X directly from Microsoft via the following link: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35

After updating please retest the issue.

Retail Key Owners:

You can get a new key directly from Warner Bros
Call their support: http://support.wbgames.com/ics/support/contactUs.asp

NOTE: The latter is not from a developer, just a customer with a work around for those that do not wish to wait.

JaseC

gave away the keys to the kingdom.
Some new posts from the Steam forums

Is that to suggest retail keys won't register on Steam after all and people will need to contact WB for replacements? Or is it just an interim option for the less patient? I assume the latter given this post is still up.

It occurs to me that I probably should have clarified that quote, it did not come from a developer but from a customer. Just some advice he gave on circumventing the whole process.

I'd expect something on GTAIV eventually, but I guess Rockstar CAN be kind of thick. Fallout 3 already has fan mods that snip it out so I expect Bethesda to eventually just patch it out entirely, if we're lucky maybe they'll patch in a sort of profile support to easily use old saves without moving them around.

At any rate nothing confirmed if Grief.exe hasn't spotted anything.
Harley's Revenge was some kind of awful. Why bother with this (non)quality of DLC?
It's admittedly another example of why to not take DLC too seriously, very rarely does it seem to be REALLY worthwhile, and I really do think Microsoft's pricing policies did a lasting disservice to what DLC should be.

Is there a way to get the CD Key after a title has GFWL removed? I wanted to earn a few more achievements in Arkham Asylum so I can finish it off on my LIVE gamer tag.

Two updates for ISTP. Steamworks will be replacing GFWL and GFWL will not be an option ala Toy Soldiers.
