I don't really want a "save the world storyline" again. It would be awesome if you played as a Cop tasked with taking down a gang or something along those lines.

I would love to play through as a Quarian - and explore more of the flotilla.

This.

I hope they won't make a compromise and remove quarians along with krogans just because only a "minority" would like them to appear. Whether as playable characters or as NPCs, they should make games for those who can appreciate it and not for the masses.

A whole universe and you want a cop drama? Hindle plz :p

If it is a new cycle, I hope it's all based on issues surrounding the first contact between species (and potential wars with may happen), and if you are the one who has to sort them out etc...

That has been mentioned a few times, hopefully it is further fleshed out with the Yahg's etc...

Just let me play as a Salarian please. Pwetty please Bioware.

I would get rid of the asari in general. Easily the worst, most uninspired race in Mass Effect by a country mile.

I would say it's the humans :p I can't name that many interesting human characters. Most of your squadmates are absolute bores.

Well when you put it like that lol.

You get what I mean though, a storyline that doesn't end with saving the world would be awesome. Maybe an intergalactic conspiracy based around race?

No. We can get rid of the pesky Quarians and all you Tali waifu loving weirdos.
Tali's hardly one of my favourite characters, so I don't know where you're going with this.

And at the very least, the quarians have a fairly well developed (by the standards of Mass Effect) culture and have an interesting visual motif that plays off the geth. Asari are bland, boring, and undercooked in both lore and in design. They presumably wanted a species that their average player could relate to and find attractive immediately and were too uninspired to figure out how to do any of that besides just painting human women blue.

Control

"Shepard did this stuff and then the reapers just disappeared... no one heard from them again and Shepard was never found"

Destroy

"Shepard did it and stuff blew up setting us back a bit, but Geth etc ended up surviving because they had been building a really powerful shelter to try and outlast the war and slowly rebuilt"

Synthesis

"Everyone had green eyes for a while and there's some altered dialogue but that's it"

Since they wrote away the whole 'everyone in orbit is obviously dead" and all the ramifications that would have had with the three different endings, it's actually pretty easy. All you need it some Bioware grade 'who gives a fuck' hand wave writing that invalidates or marginalizes any past decisions. They're really good at it writing their way out of corners with logic that makes no sense.

The bigger issues are actually how they would deal with things like the outcomes of the Geth/Quarian conflict and the Genophage.

This. And to answer your geth/quarian and genophage questions -

Saved quarians? Geth rebuilt themselves after war ended.
Saved geth? Migrant quarians rebuilt race from those not in the fleet

Activated genophage? Krogan saved, no problems
Sabotaged genophage? Cure implemented post-war, Krogan still restored

"Save the world" I'm fine with. "Save the universe because you are the chosen one and it is your destiny" is what I don't want.

Yeah the Quarians are just awful people. Asari are great, where else are you going to see Space Elves stripping on a club and being mercenaries. A refreshing take on supposedly superior and wise beings. It's funny also that since all Asari are female then none of them are, that means your canon love interest (I can't believe I forgot her name, the only asari with eyebrows) is not a woman, yet is not sexless. Pretty nice in my opinion.

More Geths please. You know that shit is going down, when you see some Primes.

Maybe not a "cop drama", but I would prefer something smaller in scale than "save the universe" scenario too. At least then it would make sense for all the other species and leaders to be ignorant about your mission, and the main character wouldn't be turned into space Jesus again after just a single game.

This is exactly what I came here to post.
They're by far the most interesting species to make a game about, in my opinion.
Especially if it's set when all the shit with the Geth originally goes down.

They looked amazing by the way. Also they stated that, like humans having many different features from each other, they wanted to do that with other races. That showed off some salarians and krogans with interesting face and bone structures.

Why do I kinda see a "Why do Klingons look different, please explain in excruciating detail why newer Klingons have ridges and the older ones don't although we all know it is just because of budgetary reasons" scenario in the near future.

Except for the ancient guardian race stuff the info reads good, though. Especially the part about a stranger in a strange land. Semi open world please with 20 big and varied locations to explore.

Not me, I love the epicness of Mass Effect 3. If anything make it bigger, what lies beyond those clusters? doesn't it all takes place in a single Galaxy?

It's kind of hard to customize Quarians considering you can't even see their faces, so it makes sense why not many want them as playable characters. Krogan...well, they all look the same to me.

Wait, is that racist?

Grunt and Wreav look pretty different. I think it's more to do with hardware limitations.
For example, I have to use a LOT and I mean a LOT of my imagination to think of jack's students as 15-17 old kids, when all of them look like middle aged turtle people.

Hopefully we see a more varied models, like young people and stuff, kids for example. I don't think I see any besides the one that blew up.

Why does aging doctor Karin Chakwacks has a better body than Jan Shepard? A soldier that hold it's own against a Krogan.

I am sorry you took my post seriously.

I can see reasons why the Quarians and Krogans might be on people's shitlists (Talimancers and the shoehorned "the Quarians were shit to the Geth" stuff from ME3; FOV problems caused by huge Krogan character models and their general Space Viking schtick), but there are worse races out there in the ME lore. But I just see this sequel thing turning into a disaster if they don't plan it out properly and ignore the Synthesis ending.

I wonder if the new species are the raloi. I hope not since I always had this image that they would look like tall chozo like beings all badass and stuff.

As much as ME3 turned me off the series I just love it too damn much. Release a sequel, don't mention the reapers or shepard, totally ignore the shepard trilogy and I'm in bioware. I'm just to invested in this series.

For what it's worth, I don't feel any race should be canned. Some, like the Asari, probably haven't lived up to their potential but I still feel there's room for improvement. Asari are an enigmatic and interesting species, one of my biggest hopes is that they'll get an interesting back story in the new games similar to the Krogans and Quarians.

Quarians are boring, honestly. After that loyalty quest, I felt like I knew everything there was to know about them.

Salarian needs to be playable since they screwed them on the first game(not having a crew member despite the other council races having one.)

More than anything I don't want it to turn into a mediocre third person shooter again. Please do something different with the combat. And I don't want to get rid of any of the races. If I had to chose I'd drop the humans honestly. And no more 'save the world' stories, please, for the love of god no more.

I don't know what's wrong behind the concept "have a big world and 'mundane' conflict". I'm not saying we should play as farmer in Dragon Age, or Omega bar bouncer, but why RPG games with big world as much as Dragon Age and Mass Effect must have end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it plot. World as scope is too ambitous and would be horrible, writing nightmare if they still insist that player agency is important. More 'mundane' conflict could have more benefit from player agency. The effect would only limited to small numbers of people, so the writing much easier to pull off. Also 'mundane' conflict could be interesting at a time. I'm having more fun from reading the galactic headline on the main menu when it still online than from playing most of the side quest. Small scope doesn't make a game less interesting, since it will fall down to executions.

The choices are: drop player agency if they still insist keeping the plot, if not the quality of the writing would again horrendous and player's agency falls flat because the immense numbers of the consequences; or they could opt for smaller scope, which makes the writing process much easier and player agencies have more feeling to it.

This what makes me so incredibly hyped for Star Wars 1313, a Star Wars game about bounty hunter until it got cancelled :(

They did say that exploration and story are very important and that one of their goals to strive for was "a stranger in a strange land like ME1" I think that's the way Mike Gamble worded it.

Yes please!

I agree with you. Granted, a lot of it has to do with how simple writing that trope is, and how well it lends itself to the BioWare structure of "unite races that are opposed, face a common foe".

Writing a non-conventional story that still involves the basic RPG mechanics - fighting, decision making, inventory management - difficult, since having a 'world-based', 'rescue all civilizations' lends itself very well to have non-descript, generic foes, weapons and items to acquire, and diplomatic situations to occur.

Not to say that you can't have those with a problem that is less dramatic - it's just easier to think up how to write for them. Having something like a race against the world is interesting, and you could have opponents to fight off, weapons to collect to fight off people who are trying to take you out of the race, and diplomatic decisions when discussing if you're going to buy off the ref, but it's not a 'comfortable' skin to quickly put on and it's harder to get an audience settled in.

Who the fuck wants to get rid of Krogans? They're like Dino-Klingons.

Me. They're a boring race really. It's all violence and dumb brute behavior and it seems to affect 99% of them. I don't mind getting rid of the quarians either really, I'd prefer those two going away than the geth, turians, salarians and asari.

There are krogran scientists and mechanics. Its like with the Klingons in Star Trek. Those who follow these careers are looked down upon but they do exist (like Okeer in ME2).

I like the Krogan if not simply for Wrex and Grunt. Sometimes only they can deliver the punchline to a joke.

I know... Fuck Turians, Drell is the superior insect race!

Turians are birds, Drells are lizards.

Edit:

More than anything I don't want it to turn into a mediocre third person shooter again.

Mass Effect 3 is the most varied and fun third person shooter of last generation. Way beyond the lines of Uncharted and Tomb Raider in terms of gameplay. Lots of guns, classes, powers, enemy behavior, verticality. It's a joy to play.
