Polygon: Why Spike is hitting the reset button on its video game awards

As long as we don't get fireworks ejaculating 30-year old men in angel costumes, I'm all for it.

...That did happen, right? Or am I remembering that wrong?

I'm guessing the actual reason for the format change is that the ratings have cratered over the years and Spike/Viacom decided to slash the shit out of their budget.

Fair enough, but I still think the Advisory panel picks are less than ideal this year. Seems skewed if anything, and 3 members of the Polygon staff? Really? Why don't IGN, Gamespot, GiantBomb etc get the same importance? Honestly not keen on the new additions. Mainly too many Polygon staff and Jeremy Parish. Also, it's a shame there's no longer someone from Official Nintendo mag, nor has there ever been anyone from Official Sony mag, whilst there still is from the Xbox side of things.

I'm glad how Geoff has done everything to make us like this more, we'll see if tomorrow was worth it.

Expecting a music medley like last year.

Maybe the R* North going all the way there is for Studio of the Year? Right, guys? TLOU will surely win? Anyone?

Would it have been if they didn't change the format? Or did Spike just not care to put it on TV regardless because of dwindling ratings or whatever?

I honestly think the latter is true, BUT -- as I said in another thread, Spike would force c-list celebs into the show if it was a live TV event.

The VGA's really should be a condensed Christmas E3 conference. Game reveals and trailers make the most noise, the cringe worthy skits and everything else doesn't add anything significant.

The Walking Dead winning last year was neat, but that one Dark Souls 2 trailer had as much hype as the show itself.

I'll tune in and give them a shot, it used to be absolute shit but I'm willing to give it a second chance because I'd love an award show that focused on core content and was executed well.

I'd prefer they let a game dev host, kick it off with Ron Gilbert or Tim Schafer as host.

I'm cautiously optimistic, if they can gear it to be more gamer centric (cut the movie/TV celebs and other really stupid stuff) then I'm all for it.

It a show regarding games, as such hosts should be well known game people (give me Carmack) and everything should be game related.

I didn't love to hate on the VGAs. It was a terrible production that just didn't work on any level, I don't care who your target audience was.

I remember a segment from last year when Daniel Keizer, or whatever his name is, was interviewing Marlon Wayans and Marlon was just laying into the dude with jokes. It was hard to watch.

Stop trying to be something you aren't. This is video games, not Hollywood. Hopefully the VGX show is a better one.

I won't be watching this year. I can't trust it'll be worth my time.

So if they're serious about this, they'll at least give it a whirl two years in a row. So the word of mouth that it's no longer garbage will strengthen viewership next year.

So it seems that at least the VGX judges haven't forgotten about GTAV yet. Pretty much everyone else seemingly has.

Is this Keighley's attempt to remove that dorito pope hat from his head? We can only hope.

Eh, just because a game is extremely popular shouldn't guarantee that each new release is met with unanimous worship and praise.

definitely watching this year, all i care about are the reveals so i don't care about celebrities with bad jokes. The awards themselves are a bit meaningless. For movies they might get me to check out something i haven't looked that much into, but for games it's the biggest most pr-friendly games that typically win. I didn't like GTA 5, winning a GOTY award doesn't really matter.

If people are done playing a game it doesn't mean they've forgotten about it. I 100%'d it in a few weeks. I enjoyed it but it came and went. Doesn't mean I've forgotten about it.

The way some of guys talk make it sound like the VGAs can be used as a form of torture. I mean come on, yea they do dumb shit on stage, but do some of you have such thin skins that you can't even tolerate it?

I find much of that crap cringeworthy all the same, but I don't even let it get to me because I love seeing new trailers and new games get revealed. Bunch of drama queens in here :p

The format in previous years ranged anywhere from mildly embarrassing (in recent years) to an utter trainwreck (in older years). Basically the people hosting and running the show try way too hard and often came across awkwardly.

Assuming they're being truthful that this year's awards show is a major change from the past, focusing more on core gamers...I get the feeling that they may be overreacting to feedback from previous years and therefore may be swinging too far in the other direction. I'll watch the awards tomorrow, but I expect a lot of people on this forum are going to post that the show bored them.

It's great that the show may have much less BS (if true) and will be more focused on games, but at the same time we want the show to be entertaining too. I think both can be done. Just be fun in an intelligent, non cringe-worthy way.

Well you can give the GoTY to the rightful winner Fire Emblem:Awakening for one. But I have zero reason to believe it won't be yet another western-gaming-"journalism" + AAA publisher circlejerk again.

People are critical of it because it's a big mainstream media event that has, in the past, perpetuated an image of the gaming population to the public that makes us look like a bunch of dudebros and such.

That's basically what I meant by it. The game came and went. And it went rather quickly. Not really deserving of a GotY award in my opinion.

I don't know, I haven't personally met anyone who sees video game players as such. In fact the opposite. I really don't think it has as big a reach as you think. Still, I really don't give a damn what some naive fool on the street thinks about me and my gaming habits, do you? I guess I just don't let that get to me. I keep on everyday all the same, no one's opinions hurt me or the industry. Industry's going the right way in growing up, slowly but gradually.

This is viewable on PS4 right? Also, is there going to be a rebroadcast after the show? Sorry if I missed it said. :/

Not on PS4, no.

You will be able to watch it again afterwards. Twitch will have it archived and Gametrailers will have it up after.

I was fine with last years show. It took a few years of begging for the show to finally be more mature. Maybe not something we can be proud of but at least it was something we weren't embarrassed by anymore. After all those years of us asking, and Geoff promising that the show would grow up, last year they finally delivered. Thanks Geoff! You're a real bro!

If this will be an improvement on that then even better. Now bring back Tricia Helfer as host dammit.

It's not so much what the general public thinks (and believe me, there are plenty of detractors as evidenced by media reports whenever there's a mass shooting), but that the creators of the show think that that was the kind of show we wanted. It's condescending.

Why would that cause a meltdown? I think Super Mario 3D World winning would cause bigger meltdowns.
There's a lot of people I noticed that really want TLOU to win, so they downgrade gta 5 hardcore, no matter how much quality it possesses. SM3DW got tons of praise out of people who actually bought the game, so that will be a pleasant surprise IMO.

Guess it's just my personality then lol, I just don't care. Yea they do dumb shit, but I don't even flinch at those, just stay for the trailers and reveals.

I'm torn. I want to support what he says he's doing.

But Geoff is a salesman first and foremost, and I can't help but be skeptical when the Doritos guy tries to sell me something.

The whole rockstar dev team there in person? GTA V GOTY confirmed? I sure hope TLoU gets it.

They pretty much just spoiled it.

He said all devs made acceptance videos and only said the GOTY would have a live acceptance... then said the Rockstar team would be flying in lol.

Well now the "gamers" have to step up and actually watch this shit or they'll be forced to go right back to that other format or give up entirely.

Yup. I hated the VGA's, they were complete trash and the teabagging on stage during award acceptance speeches was fucking god awful.

But I will watch this iteration of it if it is targeted towards actual gamers, not mainstream tv watchers with a light interest in gaming.

Oh I thought you were on their side lol.

I disagree with you though. Most games come and go, especially during hectic release schedules. This year GTA suffered particularly in this aspect due to the arrival of next-gen.

If Geoff is still a part of it then no thanks. Fuck that guy.

But he will guide you to the crunchy land.

I actually did enjoy the VGAs last year (mostly because of Samuel L Jackson), and I will be tuning in this year hoping for good things.

Keighely says that Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony will each have a presence at the show and that folks like Rockstar Games are flying the entire Rockstar North development team into LA from Edinburgh, Scotland for the show.

GTA5 GOTY winner confirmed. Way to be subtle about it Keighley.
