Super Smash Bros Wii U & 3DS Thread 4: New Year, Old Arguments

G/S - Pichu
R/S - Plusle & Minun
D/P - Lucario
B/W - Zoroark

My absolute pipe dream of a Pokémon roster would be:

Pikachu
Jigglypuff
Mewtwo
Pokémon Trainer
Plusle & Minun
Lucario
Zoroark

Good point on zoroark. I do think P+M might have missed the boat, though.

Yeah, it's definitely too late for them. For whatever reason, they've always been among my favorite Pokémon, and it would be nice to see the Double Battle mechanic represented in Smash Bros. When I found out they were supposed to be in Brawl I lost it, because that was the only chance they'd ever have of making the roster.

I don't see why we there couldn't be two Trainers. That way we can keep Red and still have generational diversity. I love Gen 1 as much as the next guy, but some more variety wouldn't go amiss, assuming it worked within the game itself.

That's technically nine characters, which most people would say is too many, but considering Pokémon is Nintendo's second-biggest franchise I'd be completely fine with that. There are bound to be at least ten Mario family characters, after all. Also, had Plusle & Minun and Mewtwo made the cut as originally planned, Brawl would have had eight playable Pokémon.

Good post, I agree completely. I can't speak for what would be a good Gen VI rep since it's the only gen I haven't played, but I wouldn't be averse to adding one more for that game if there was a good one. That way there's a good balance of adhering to the classics and representing the new games, and that would put the series on a good track to only have to add one new Pokemon rep per game, or none on some occasions.

I mean, not only does Pokemon sell more than any other Nintendo franchise other than Mario, it also has far-and-away the most potential characters.

Sixth gen rep confirmed, there's no other way about it. Zoroark is a failure compared to Lucario in terms of popularity so I doubt we'll see it.

I can practically guarantee Sylveon won’t be playable. It’s only notable because the Fairy type is new. All the Eeveelutions are considered equal — we’re not going to get Sylveon without Jolteon, Vaporean, Flareon, Umbreon, Espeon, Glaceon, and Leafeon.

Oooh, we're on Pokemon roster discussions again?

I think it's going to be Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Pokemon Trainer, Lucario and Mewtwo.

Like someone said earlier, Jigglypuff is not just a Pokemon icon, it's a Smash icon now. If I had to cut someone I'd want it to be Jigglypuff, but I can't deny that it looks like she's here to stay.

Pokemon Trainer is the main character of the series and Red is the most well known. The Kanto starters are the most iconic. They're not going anywhere. PT is also the first Pokemon character in the series to be unlocked from the start besides Pikachu.

The cry for Mewtwo can't be ignored, and it came back into relevance with not one but two Mega forms. I think it deserves to come back and hopefully be improved.

I don't think Lucario is going anywhere either. People try to dismiss it but Lucario's been relevant through all 3 gens so far. Lucario even replaced Zoroark on the Pokemon Sunday show, who originally replaced Lucario. Not only that, Lucario is getting a D-Arts figure, which is an honour that has been given to Mewtwo and the Kanto starters' final forms. Lucario is not just a fad Pokemon--it's extremely popular.

With the Pokemon Company trying to make Zoroark the next Lucario and failing at it, I doubt Zoroark's chances. I'd say it has a better shot of being a Poke Ball Pokemon. Trust me, I've grown to like Zoroark but I don't think any gen 5 or 6 Pokemon will be playable. Mega Mewtwo or Mega Lucario will rep generation 6 if anything.

Having another Pokemon Trainer in the roster would be way too much work and way too many Pokemon characters.

found other leak from gamefaqs I guess.

I work for Bandai Namco and I am currently involved in development of the next Super Smash Brothers. Obviously I do not directly work with Sakurai nor do I have the full roster of Super Smash Brothers 4. Sakurai tries his best to keep all that information locked up tight. However, I have talked to a few coworkers and managed to get a decent amount of information.

-The Mii has been completed, but Sakurai is waiting to reveal the character. The Mii's moveset is loosely based off of the sports games.

-Ness, Ike, and R.O.B are all returning primarily the same.

-Little Mac and King K Rool are planned for the roster, but development for them has not yet begun

-Mewtwo is in early development. Mewtwo uses elements from Pokemon X and Y, including Mewtwo's mega evolutions.

However this is all I currently know, but I will make another post if I happen to learn anything else.

I would consider the Smash cycle to take the aspects of Smash discussion that is silly and pointless. Talking about Pokemon isn't silly and pointless which is a part of Smash. Talking about fake rumors is silly and pointless.

I'd love for it to happen, and Sylveon is pretty popular, so I wouldn't be too surprised.

For Pokemon characters, I'd like to see the roster be Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Mewtwo, Lucario, Pokemon Trainer, New Pokemon Trainer with X and Y starters, and Sylveon. I know that's not very likely, but personally I'd love to see it end up like that. I wouldn't be surprised if Lucario was cut, and wouldn't even mind very much since I'm not fond of him, but it would be a pity to lose a unique moveset.

What's with all these rumors popping up? It's like every day we have a new batch of BS.

and plz don't cut lucas :(

Well, I always take rumors as good sign that the game is getting ready to be released. :p

If I recalled correctly, the rumors have been slowly increased when we got closer to the release date, right? so it will be a long bumpy ride along with a lot of false rumors and only few real leaks. It will make it harder for us to verifying the real leaks.

I don't know if I'm allowed to post the link here, but if anyone's bored and wants to hear Sakurai talk about Brawl for almost an hour I reacquired his 2008 GDC keynote address (GDC removed the file from their site last year).

There isn't really anything new in the speech -- it's been summarized on various sites in the past -- but it's still nice to hear in full.

as much as i want those two, I swear this isn't how fighting game development works

If the game is coming out anytime this year all the characters probably would've been finished conceptually by this point. I very, very much doubt they'd make one character at a time.

I've been having an internal conflict with myself regarding a potential The Wonderful 101 character. That would either be Wonder-Red (which is the popular choice) or Wonderful Ones, a group character comprised of multiple Wonderful Ones, or at least the main ones (Wonder-Red, Wonder-Blue, Wonder-Green, Wonder-Pink, Wonder-Yellow, Wonder-White, and Wonder-Black). My choice would be Wonderful Ones, though I question the plausibility of such a character. It would certainly be something different and unique, though, which is exactly what Sakurai is looking for.

Even since the reveal of the game, I've thought that a character from The Wonderful 101 would be perfect for Smash Bros., but I doubted that it would actually happen, so I omitted Wonderful Ones from my roster predictions and all. But after giving it much thought, I believe they've got a decent shot, at least as much as Shulk does, so I put them in my roster as an alternative to Shulk.

Would characters not be at the top of the to-do list?

I hope nobody takes these "leaks" seriously. BS through and through.

Yeah, it's even worse when other leaks from a month ago act like there's still a ton of internal debate over whether 'x' should be in over 'y' which insinuates they're not even remotely planned out, let alone started being modelled/rigged/textured/programmed/tested despite the game coming out anytime from this summer to winter. It's dumb.

I'd think they'd be one of the first things the crew handles. They'd probably have to wait for art and assets to fully implement them, but they'd certainly have placeholders they could use while they wait for those to come into later builds.

I work for the 'dai' part of Namco Bandai (which is why you've probably not heard this before because other insiders probably work for the Nam or co or Ban parts of the firm) and I can confirm that while playing Smash for Wii U with the GamePad the Bandai series of Tamagotchi will be playable on the GamePad screen so when you are fighting with Mario you can be feeding your big lipped blob looking thing. It will be very exciting and just another step in the ways the Smash series is pushing the fighting genre forward!

Technically they do if you are talking about one team. I don't have any experience at any major, but I learned from what I heard. They actually focus on a character at a time depend on which teams that are working on. I'm terrible with explaining but I will use an excuse instead. However they might work differently than other companies, so don't take my words or examples as 100% fact.

Art & Model Team would work on a new character model (Takamaru) and they just completed their job with veteran character. (Fox) So they would pass it over to other team to work on character and install them into the game.

Moves & Behavior Team would receive the model of Fox from other team, and port Brawl's files into SSB4. Of course, they would adjust the files and make it much better. Hopefully. Once they are done with setting up the moves, and giving them facial expression and behaviors (Stand By, Taunts, etc) (I'm not sure if Moves, Behavior, etc would be in a same team, but it's just an example.)

HitBox + Balance Team
You know how it work. blah blah blah.

Once they are done with a bunch of works, then they probably would have beta testers to testing the games out. (usually at late phrase of development.) Technically if they only have three teams then they could work on three characters at once with three different teams.

Edited: Also those teams are for character progress only, and I'm pretty sure that they had other teams working on the stages, trophies, etc.

Rumors might be my favorite part of the pre-Smash release cycle, especially the super outlandish ones.

That new GameFAQs one is weak!

Since when is that confirmed by Sakurai or even a consensus? If anything Sylveon is more likely than the others because the Fairy type is new, as well as being one of the promotional 6th gen Pokemon.
