Sony won't offer option to disable PS4 DualShock 4 light bar

What does that have to do with anything?

Glass reflects, surely that would have factored into your decision. Sony didn't make you buy a Plasma so now you have to deal with the issues that arise from having a glass screen.

Suck it up or don't play on the console, problem solved. Sony aren't going to spend time and money to "fix" something so trivial.

Er, that's not really what "solved" means.

Its probably that the electronics in the DS4 won't allow for the light bar to be turned off, the decision to dump the pack in camera came late so i'm betting they didn't envisage the need to turn it off during the controller design.

I never see mine reflected on the TV (LCD though), I usually forget it's even there, and when I notice it I remember that I actually like it.

Adding the option to turn off the LED isn't rocket science and could be done by a single engineer in a short time span, resulting in an extremely minimal delay for other fixes that's most likely not even noticeable. This would result in given people more than double the battery life while costing you nothing.

If you don't care please stop posting here or stop acting like the problems doesn't exist.

You must work for Sony if it's so easy maybe you should do it for them.

It's not just as simple as adding code, there is testing to make sure the code you added hasn't broke anything else, testing to make sure it won't brick everyones machine, etc.. etc..

I can't believe that people are arguing that it's too much work to offer an option to disable that light. Seriously.

No I don't work for Sony. And don't assume that I know jack about software engineering.
If Sony has troubles with adding such a small feature without making sure that the system doesn't brick than Sony has some real problems. And I would be more concerned about the capabilities of their software teams than about this.

Yeah way to miss the point of the post, keep whining about that LED, I'm sure Sony will change their mind if you keep doing it.

I dont see the problem with these light bars, can someone explain why?

I never look at my pad tbh when playing, and when watching Netflix or anything, i put it down to the side and it dont distract me, if it did, i would cover the light with a cushion or sometihng...

Please enlighten me on how exactly I'm missing the point?

Besides I think it's really funny that you're whining about people who want a feature added to the console. A feature that doesn't affect you in the slightest.

Holy defence force batman

Plasma owners are clearly to blame here

This thread clearly shows it is not so trivial

this is completely pointless, there's literally no reason at all to not offer the option to turn it off

You should all just be ignoring LegendofMart. He hasn't said one intelligent or worthwhile thing in this entire discussion. You guys are just wasting your time.

That's probably what most people do - I know I do - and it's a slight inconvenience.

End of the world? No. Slightly incovenient? Yes.

What grates slightly is that on PC its been shown that the light bar can be turned off through software. Sony's refusal to allow this means I'm going to have to either i) open up my DS4 to try and physically remove the connection, or ii) put some tape over the light bar
, or iii) deal with it.

Defense force is vexing. Terribly vexing.

Anyway, I'm one of those thoughtless plasma owners - has anyone dismantled the DS4 to cut the light?

This was my concern as launch was approaching. I like to play in the dark at night and I was worried that glare would be a problem on my tv due to the controller LED. Leading up to launch, there were many statements downplaying how bright it was and that eased my concern.

Day 1, I play it at night and it certainly did create a glare on my tv showing a green/blue light on my tv. My TV has a matte screen as well. At this point, I'm thinking what the heck is the point of having that LED light on when you're playing by yourself? I mean, I never even notice the light is changing colours like it does in KZ and NFS Rivals unless I'm playing in the dark.
Maybe they can add an option to have it off when only one controller is connected and then have it on when multiple controllers are connected for the sake of player indication or using the Playstation Camera.

I have a plasma and no PS4, I do use DS4 on my PC though to play on plasma, wow such defense force.
You are telling people who are asking for a feature change to resolve an annoying issue of the pointless LED on the controller that it is their fault.

Clearly you are not invested, my bad

Goddammit. Can we at least get an option to dim it? Fucker clearly shines through the tape I put over it and reflects in my TV.

Sugru plastics wonder fix! :D

Since they want to keep it presumably because it's the only way to tell if the controller is on, would making it slowly blink reduce battery consumption? Like, once every 10 seconds, it slowly glows for ~2 seconds, and the rest of the time it's off, unless the game requires it.

Then, I don't understand electronics.

Three of the four things the lightbar currently does require you to see a light or a change in the light's color. Infrared would not work for that.

Having a infrared camera on the other end? Of course it would!

Out of that list, only giving ambient light effects wouldn't, though I'm not even sure what that means :p

It's a crap answer tho.

No ones blowing it out of proportion- it's a minor annoyance. But the fix is likely just as minor.

It's an answer that was known for months. It's not even news; and also he said they'd look into the possibility of allowing users to dim it.

I use a projector in a dark room. I only want to see the light from my screen. I don't want to see my lap all lit up like a smurf when playing.

I think it must be especially bad the TV is displaying a black background. Besides, someone correct me if I am wrong, it is useless unless you have a Eyetoy.

Me too.

seriously though, who uses the controller with the Light bar directly to the TV? for me its either it is pointing abit downward or upward. Never straight nor seen a reflection on my TV.
I agree with the spoiler part. But if you really have to cover it up, consider sticking with something that doesn't leave residue when peeled off.

Not everyone plays the same. This is my problem with it:

I sit in a computer chair with my tv on a small stand about 7 feet away from me, and the bottom of the tv starts about level with my knees when I'm in the chair. I'm simply holding the controller in my hands with my forearms/wrist resting on my legs, and the DS4 lightbar is always visible at the very bottom of my screen. It's annoying as fuck.

This is a pretty reasonable, and I'm guessing common arrangement (several of my friends have roughly the same setup). I don't think I should have to rearrange furniture or put fucking tape on my controller to fix this shit that I didn't want and does nothing for me.

How is anyone defending this, lol. This doesn't make Sony evil, but it sucks that plasma owners need to deal with a pointless blue light for no reason.

Really boggles the mind.
The stupidest thing is that some people are even going so far as to blame others for buying plasma tv's. I mean FFS. It doesn't get much more retarded than that.

It makes no sense that they don't make the light optional (option to turn it off for all non-camera games, eg. only have it light up for a few seconds when the PS button is pressed) since this is clearly a minor software issue.
However, some of the reactions here are blowing it way out of proportion.

Nope. The guy who coded DS4 to Xinput wrapper added the ability to turn of the light bar on PC.

I have my TV hanging on the wall approximately 40 inches off the floor. I don't have the issues of seeing the controllers LED reflection. Also I don't care about the LED during movies because if it's that obtrusive, I turn the controller off. Even if I don't, it shuts itself off after being idle 10 minutes anyway. If it really really bothered me, I could just put some tape over it. BUT! There should be a way to shut it off. But then again. My Keurig doesn't have an option to function without its LEDs. My smoke detectors are worse. You can't shut them off, and they blink! My TVs all have the intrusive LEDs. My thermostat, my battery chargers, my PC, and Laptops.......I'm surrounded by LEDs that the manufacturer has deemed it their job to decide whether they want them on all the time or not. Without my say so! I'd hate to be those that find the light offensive. It must be maddening running around the house putting tape on everything.

Don't be so obtuse. Clearly the DS4 LED is more of a problem, as for some it reflects directly onto the TV as they're playing a game.

My brother bought me a controller charging dock for Christmas. Best gift I've gotten in a long time. Thing runs out of juice or near dead every day.

I guess i'll have to make an option myself, with electrical tape or something, because this thing is really annoying when playing at night.

Yeah cause choosing to have a glass screened TV that is obviously going to have reflections is the same as living in a place you don't want to be.

It's a design choice that they chose, they don't want to "fix" a non-issue, get over it.

It's a useless gimmick that's causing a problem to anyone who has the TV screen low or close enough.
It's absolutely silly to defend it, since it serves almost no useful purpose, beyond gimmicks that a single small led would've done just as well.
Matte screens reflect lights too, btw.
Something that would absolutely trivial to deactivate as an option.

It's an issue and they apparently don't want to fix it nor give any explanation as to why, and it seems like some people are defending a multimillion dollars corporation for their bullshit, just because they're funny on Twitter and acknowledge their memes.

I love my PS4, but this is some bullshit.

Anyone saying "just turn the controller off", well, no. Obviously that doesn't work for games, but even with Netflix I might want to quickly pause the show for a whole bunch of reasons.

I don't even care about the light bars impact on battery, I just don't want my controller glowing. Ever.

Well, this is just great. Another piece of home electronics that I have to put fucking tape over. Thanks a lot.

Not to downplay the issue, but as a solution (for now), I have my controllers set to time out after 10 minutes. If I need to pause during Netflix, I just hit the ps button. It turns the controller on and takes you to the home screen while pausing the movie. A quick x x starts it up again.
