Best Looking Trees In Gaming

The Last Guardian looks like it has decent trees too.

The first time I saw these birch tree's, I fell in love with Skyrim. My favorite kind of tree's in real life.

Someone on reddit explained it here

Yeah. This thread resulted in a reddit post about that tree, lol
...I should try that when I play it again and take screens of it:

"Some people don't seem to believe, but it's real. I'm not sure if there's a name for the method Uncharted uses, or if this is the exact process they use, but what they appear do is have very high res textures for everything, but during regular play in motion, you only ever see the downscaled version.

However, if you aim at an object, the high res texture is loaded and it looks amazing. You can aim at cars, the ground, rocks, people, everything has very high res textures that show up when you aim at it/them.

And it doesn't look weird to have the game load a new texture on the fly, because theres a small blurring effect that feels like your eyes are adjusting focus when you're looking at something with more attention.

You won't find a screenshot of Uncharted looking this good when Nathan is not aiming tho."

no way... I don't remember it looking that good. Typically I remember things looking better than they are...

Someone tell me I'm not looking at a Crysis mod or something...

Answered in that reddit. It only looks that good when you aim.

That is really clever. I think I remember the blur effect, and it makes perfect sense when you're playing. Very cool.

I feel like such a damned PC snob, but I see a picture like this and think "God that art style is absolutely fantastic. If only the texture resolution wasn't so low so there could be clean detail in all of the backdrop behind the characters."

The characters look so clean and crisp but the backgrounds have really blurry low res textures and it's just upsetting to me. I love seeing games at their full potential and it feels like the games visuals were so great and just held back by the hardware they were on.

I just tried it out and I can confirm that he is right and it works, heck some textures look different when zooming in, like a higher resolution.

It's probably just their texture streaming solution.

I hope people understand that it is 95% artistry and 5% technology that makes things look so great. Even though it is realistic, it takes insane talent to make something look good (sometimes even more than stylized). The ND tree's are incredible, because they are incredible artists that know game-art extremely well...

I can explain/make most of the tree's shown here, but that ND one is just simply perfect. Not sure how they did that. Could be scan data (with normal), but I know they weren't using that on U3.

I do love CDPR's trees in The Witcher series.

Surprising how so many people didn't notice how incredible Uncharted 3's trees looked. That little forest section in France was probably the best I've seen graphically in the previous gen. They had three games to hone their craft, and goddamn did it show.

Far Cry 2 deserves a mention, too. It might not have the best looking trees, but it certainly some pretty amazing foliage physics. Every tree and bush reacts to you, cars, enemies, bullets and even shock waves. I was a bit disappointed that in FC3 the trees were mostly static.

A stylists tree, which represent the art style, the game world and the whole theme of the game, will always look better, then any realistic tree. There is simply more meaning, thought and work put into an stylists tree. A realistic tree is mostly just an tree.

Oooh yes, thanks for reminding me. They can be technically ugly, but they've got such charm... especially in Kunark imho. Sorry, I got a bit carried away with nostalgia here...

A stylists tree, which represent the art style, the game world and the whole theme of the game, will always look better, then any realistic tree. There is simply more meaning, thought and work put into an stylists tree. A realistic tree is mostly just an tree.

Thought / Work: Are realistic videogame assets easy enough anyone can do it, no method or design, especially the very best ones? Don't know what's so special about these Naughty Dog guys then!

Meaning: A tree is a tree. You look at it, your brain recognizes it, you attribute the meaning of "tree" to it. Maybe "pretty tree" or "weird tree", but that's how it goes. There's your meaning.

And you can't think of a "stylists tree" that looks worse than an actual tree? Do you like kindergarten drawings better than walks in the woods? Much stylists.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Oblivion's colorful trees blew my mind back in the early days of the 360 generation. They didn't necessarily show the best fidelity, but just the sheer color and the fact that the game had freaking forests blew me away.
