I just got a call from GameStop here in Finland, that my preorder for the Wii U DedSec edition has been cancelled. That version is not coming out.

I asked about the other versions, and he confirmed that the regular edition and Vigilante Edition are still coming.

I have the WiiU Dedsec Edition on order, as i'm getting a PS4 soon i am thinking of switching my order, o know that the game is supposed to be good with the gamepad, but i just don't know, i'm 50/50 on which version to get really, the other issue is that there will be much more mulitplayer options on the MS & Sony consoles.

ITS OFFICIAL (sort of)

I have a friend who works for Ubisoft here in the UK, I've just messaged her and her response was "Internal rumours, but I wouldn't bank on it on WiiU"

So for me personally, that's all the confirmation I need :-(

Independent of Watch Dogs for Wii U being canceled or not, Wii U won't get any 3rd party games except for Lego, Skylanders and few others. So let's not act like this is the turning point. It isn't. The sales for Splinter Cell, ACIV and Ghosts sealed that.

One thing I don't understand though, why are producers not willing to put the nearly finished games on eshop rather than cancel it completely?

But surely the game was almost complete? From a business perspective, why refuse to release a game that's almost complete and no doubt had a good few million spent on it? If they want to cut their losses, then fine. But surely make back what they can and just finish what's almost done?

I've been wondering the same thing about the e-shop. I'm guessing the version is just pretty crappy to be blunt.

Maybe they're cancelling translations (with the exception of French/Spanish)? I can see Ubisoft releasing WD with only English, French or Spanish language packs. The Wii U is pretty much dead in every European country apart from France (which would probably get the Canadian version, just like Spain would get the US version).

Still have to go through QA, testing, certification, classification, etc.

Like EC said, the cost of all those things may work out to be higher than the probably revenue that can be generated by Watch Dogs on WiiU.

Maybe they haven't done much of a WiiU version yet. Maybe they were silently planning on delaying the WiiU version. We don't know.

Was anyone here actually going to get the Wii U version? Genuinely curious.

In all honesty I was. However in the time since it was delayed I've decided to draw back from Wii U so I won't be. I might get it later in the year on another platform when I will likely get a PS4 or Steam Machine.

"Internal rumours"? That doesn't confirm anything.

To me it seems to be about cancelling one special edition, which I think is smart. They really don't need to press various editions. Just put out one version, two maximum, and it's done.

If anything, I'm surprised this hasn't happened sooner. Ubisoft would be fools to release Watch Dogs on Wii U at this point. It's practically a guaranteed loss of money.

Not actually that important
Gamestop.it has removed every mention of Watch Dogs Wii U, not only the DEDSEC sku; there's also a clickable cover for the game in the WiiU section of the website but clicking on it just redirects you to the homepage.

I've just called my Gamestop and they insist the game is cancelled.
Waiting confirmation from a friend from Ubi Milan (if he even knows about it), I texted him but got no answer yet.

Imo this is how things are, the expensive collector's is no more but the game is still alive.

If they already informed retailers about this, then maybe we will get an official release date soon together with new footage. I wouldn't be surprised if this slipped to Q4 this year.

It's listed as "Spring 2014" on the Ubi site. Another delay might turn out very bad for this game.

Why any delay is bad for a game? Game is (hopefully) released when it's ready. There are other games to be played meanwhile. I don't even want some halfassed bugridden version. Watch_Dogs was actually my PS4 launch game, I bought PS4 for that and in the end I'm glad they postponed it if they need to fix some issues in it. I'll get Thief next month and Infamous in March, and I'm all good 'til Watch_Dogs is released.

I'd be pretty surprised if it really releases this spring. Either the summer like Far Cry 3, or September like Blacklist and Rayman. Maybe even later, depending on what they're doing with this year's AC.

I referred to this delay, not delays in general. When Nintendo delays a game you can be sure it's to ensure higher quality. With Ubisoft I'm not so sure, they don't exactly stand for "bug free releases". Some of their games have been released with severe game breaking bugs in the past.

Eh... what? I think you have misunderstood what it is that has earned EA the "evil corporation" tag.
Yep.

Also, a company cancelling a game because they think they are going to lose money on it is... just a regular company. No company wants to go bankrupt. No one wants their company to go bankrupt either.

EA is not a very good company for other unrelated reasons, not because they are not supporting a system where their games are going to bomb and any original content made for it is likely to fail.

Well crap. If the final cancellation word comes out, I guess it's 360 version for me. Or maybe I'll finally build that PC I've been putting off for a long time...

EA saw this a long time ago though. They didnt belive in the platform at all.
Good call on their part it seems.

To be fair they didnt really try execpt for some late ports. On the other hand, major AAA games from third parties werent exactly hot sellers on the Wii either. It was pretty clear from the beining that 3rd parties will abandon Nintendos home consoles for good.

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Whew, if Ubisoft really is out, that truly is the end of the road. Not just for WiiU, but for Nintendo home consoles.

Who's going to come back next time around and give it another shake, when history is now undeniable. Nintendo would have to sell almost 5-10 million off their own back rapidly to even be worthy of consideration by third parties.

I am going to leave my WiiU pre-order for the dead-sec version & order a PS4 version until i know more, i would like the dead-sec version so if the WiiU is dropped then i will have no choice but to get the PS4 version, shame as Ubi had said they had put a lot into the second screen version with AR & scanning things.

It still needs a certain amount of investment to reach the point whereby it's ready for general release, whether that's say another three months of development, QA, localisation, etc. It might be 'close' to release, but they still need to invest a fair chunk of money to reach the finish line. My guess is they've seen the terrible sales for the Wii U as well as their own software on the console and figured they'd cut their losses and cancel it.

Uh, Far Cry 3 released early December 2012.

CVG got a response from Ubisoft. Doesn't really fill me with confidence to be honest. The game is announced for Wii U, it wouldn't really be that hard to say that it is still in development.

CVG contacted the studio to address the rumour after it was claimed that Italian branches of GameStop have been cancelling pre-orders and informing customers the Wii U version had been scrapped.

"We have nothing to comment at the moment," a Ubisoft spokesperson replied.

It is unclear why Ubisoft is not discussing the matter, though the publisher has a general policy of not addressing rumours and speculation.

Ubisoft next financial call is on February 10. Pretty sure we will hear something then.

Invest millions until now.

Sell maybe 100.000 and get back some money.

Sell 0 and get back 0 money.

Don't see how this makes sense now.
This. It's most likely pretty much a sunk cost at this point.

It might be like Call of Duty Ghosts where some places didn't carry the Wii U version physically but you could order it from the website
Could be this. Gamestop Italy just may not be stocking it in stores. Seems more likely than an outright cancellation, but who knows.

A year ago near this time when Ubi had their fiscal call they delayed Legends and announced it going multiplatform.

This year Watch Dogs might be cancelled for Wii U.

It was only the beginning.

I think so too.

It'll be cool if Ubisoft is still going to release Watch Dogs on Wii U but I can't really blame them if they won't. Feels bad as a Wii U-owner to say this though. But business is business.

That's... odd... One could read that as an unofficial confirmation.

Yeah; I'm betting it's cancelled, but they're waiting for the proper announcement to come out in a press release. I don't see why they wouldn't just say "As far as we know the Wii U version is still going ahead" if there was no doubt at all.

I'm wondering how much money was put into the port before being canned. At what point did they look at the progress of the port and decide that it would cost more money to finish and ship it than otherwise.

I'm guessing they haven't been very serious about this version for at least a few months.

I planned on picking up the Wii U version, but only if the actual game turns out great - it's not my favorite type of game in general so it will need to be a bit special for me to purchase it at all, on any platform.

tbh I'm far more excited for upcoming Wii U exclusives (DK, kart, smash, bayo, x, zelda u etc), most multiplats I'll purchase on PC if available anyway. In the case of Watchdogs I like how the GamePad is generally used in open world games and it's why I was interested in U version over PC.

I'd only be a little disappointed if it's true - I buy Nintendo hardware primarily for Nintendo developed/published games anyway, but it is certainly sad to see the console losing more 3rd party support.

This. It's most likely pretty much a sunk cost at this point.

Not if significant changes are being made to the codebase and the Wii U version needs reworking. It's better to cut one's losses and move resources to a project with a better ROI. Ubisoft games have sold like shit on Wii U and Watchdoge is already being released on five other platforms, all of which have proven buyers of their games. The additional revenue generated by a Wii U release would not be very high as they would be targeting a very narrow base of people who only own a Wii U, there can't be very many of them, and to justify continued investment the attach rate among those people would have to be insanely high. Unrealistically so. Cutting and running at this stage is still a viable option.
