Physics can't be THAT hard to program, right? Isn't it all math based regarding speed, momentum and such? If it's a given science, how hard is it really to replicate the 2D physics in 3D? These guys get paid for crunching numbers and programming codes, you'd think they could do it easily!

Classic Sonic physics in 3D aren't impossible or anything. Sonic Adventure 1, Sonic Adventure 2, and Sonic Heroes actually had a fairly sound "Sonic physics" base, they just don't really get used for anything because the games are so heavily scripted. (This was discovered when people figured out how to hack in custom levels to Sonic Adventure)

Fans have also started fangames with proper 3D Sonic physics; there's BlitzSonic for the old Blitz3D engine, and it's open source so it comes in many flavors (see: here, here, here, here). A more modern equivalent is SonicGDK, which was created with the free Unreal Engine 3 devkit. Video examples of that are here, here, here and here.

So it's not impossible, it's just Sonic Team really likes to heavily script what Sonic can do. Even when not explicitly scripting Sonic's exact movements, games like Sonic Generations still have ways to push and pull Sonic's movement and position to be in highly specific places and specific speeds.

While I liked Generations, I think it ultimately exposed the big problem Sega is having with Sonic games.

You blow through the game too fast and it's hard to make content, so either you make a shitload of filler content or make the game short. Generations compromised by making a short game with filler content.

I don't know that they'll ever solve this issue to my complete satisfaction.

The really funny part though was how they "solved" the issue with Colors but then went and made a move with Generations (the whole Classic Stage v Modern Stage dissection) that essentially re-emphasized the issue.

Edit: What what what, total series reboot? This could be interesting or scary.

Yeah, kind of an overreaction, as much as I dislike MLP, the issue has always been with the fans, not the actual show which is headed by the talented Lauren Faust who worked on many classic Cartoon Network shows.

I just want a new 2D gameplay Sonic game, without stupid gimmicks like the (IMO) game-breaking auto-attack lock on, and physics like the classics. That's all I'm asking for.

This. Sonic 4 Eps 1/2 just didn't have the tight and enjoyable gameplay of the Genesis originals, and Sonic Generations had too much emphasis trying to shove 3D gameplay in there at every opportunity.. and at a shoddy 30fps on consoles too. No 2D platformer should suffer from 30fps.

Sonic Colors was the start of the problem that dragged down Lost World, I feel. You can say that Sonic is a platformer franchise but as a platformer his controls were never as good as Mario.

The ultra-fast gameplay of Rush, Unleashed and Generations were, in my opinion, a stronger identity for Sonic. Pushing Sonic harder down the path of Mario downplays what makes him unique.

I agree and think Sonic Generations' modern levels were better than the classic levels, at least for speed running. The classic levels did have a bit of nostalgic charm, but they weren't as fun after the first couple times through. I was disappointed that Lost World moved away from Generations' modern playstyle.

Don't know if true but I saw this stuff being posted around:

>Sonic Boom to premiere on Cartoon Network in September 2015
>Will be "strictly a comedy", and poke fun at the series
>Many obscure characters from "decades of Sega classics" will make cameo appearances
>Characters to get redesigns "reflective of a new era, but still acknowledging the charm of the classic, iconic art style of yesteryear".
>Takashi Iizuka to be a close associate and creative consultant to the show.
>Crush 40 to work on the show's soundtrack.
>Characters will "act their age". Sonic and Amy are in their teens, Tails is 10, Knuckles is 19 and "Eggman is as old as you think he is".
>The humor and self-awareness in Sonic Generations partly inspired the desire to reboot the Sonic universe.

I honestly would not be surprised if this show ends up becoming surprisingly popular if they play the cards right, especially the "decades of sega classics" if they really dig deep.

Also, from what I've heard, apparently the show designs are NOT being used for the games.

Woah, someone saying that colours is the start of the problem?

I have to ask, what? If you mean the wisps, I'm baffled, as they fit seemlessly into the game (unlike sonic lost world where they appear to have been forced in as a bs excuse to use the gamepads "features").

So like, does that mean there's gonna be an episode where the Bonanza Bros steal their stuff & they gotta get it back? Or Tails has to help Opa-Opa because he can't fly anymore?

I am going to reserve my opinion on all of this until I know and see a bit more.
I want to at least see the actual non-silhouetted character designs first.

I'm....actually okay with this for the most part....even if Knuckles is still a bit steroid-ish looking.

Sonic Colors was a pretty slow game with lots of fiddly platforming bits that didn't feel super great.

Somebody from Sonic Team admitted post-release that Sonic Colors was intentionally designed to appeal to the "Nintendo Audience", and that they were trying to make a game they thought fans of Mario would enjoy more. The wisp power-up system is kind of a dead giveaway in retrospect; Sonic's never had anything like that before.

Sonic Colors' Nintendo-inspiration paved the way for Sonic Lost World, and Sonic Lost World is a contender for the slowest Sonic game ever made. As I said earlier in the thread, it is a poor man's Super Mario Galaxy.

Woah.

I'll admit, it's not as bad as I was expecting. Hmm.
That Knuckles though... that may take some getting used to. Wow.

Wow, I was expecting them to look a lot more different than they look now. Knuckles looks pretty much the same but buff and imo it looks a bit awkward.

Well that could've been a lot worse. I'd like to see Tails now. I could definitely see this being just for the tv show then, since there aren't huge differences.
