Irfanview is free and does the same.

im aware yes.

I havent done testing on it but photoshop has a wider breadth of quality settings. i dont know how much of a difference it makes or if its actually just rebranded but Photoshop quality levels max out at 12 (and they say its for excessively accurate IQ) that may be higher quality than irfan or Faststone. Also, some people just dont want to download additional software if theyre already familiar with one they own.

Some people cant get photoshop though. I can only use it because I have a work license.

I can't tell a difference between PNGs or max quality JPGs from FastStone so I'd say it's pretty good. Batch converting and resizing in FastStone is also ridiculously easy.

Any here are a few more Wolfenstein screenshots. I might play through Rage again next. Not really sure.

Edit: I actually did a comparison test and FastStone seems to have higher quality JPEG output when compared to Photoshops JPEG output, BUT the visual difference is minimal, and Photoshop has considerably smaller file sizes. I'll post comparison results in a bit.

I totally recognize this, and I'm not posting it as a universal solution for people, I'm just assuming that some of the people posting PNG's are because they don't want to go through what may seem like a significant effort of converting all of their screenshots. I just intended to show that as long as they have photoshop, it really isn't a difficult process at all.

I didn't cover free stuff because I've already given the little tutorial on FastStone in the JPEG guide in the OP, as well as the potential quality difference.

I think I'll actually just go ahead and test the quality difference between 12 quality photoshop JPEGs and max quality faststone conversions so we can finally know how big of an impact it really is. I'm guessing not much, but it would be good to have some sort of tested visual proof rather than just assumption.

That makes sense. I was wary of Photoshop jpgs because they always came out so much smaller than FastStone. I would imagine people stick to their PNGs because they have misconceptions about jpgs and quality.

I originally switched to FastStone because of how easy it is to convert massive batches of images in a single step, but then I fell in love with lanczos as a resampling filter as well. You can also open one in full screen and start flipping through. Larger images will be resampled as you go so you'll see how they'll look after you do the resize. All in all, a great program for viewing, resizing and converting images.

BF4 1920x1080, Ultra, 200% Resolution Scale.

Was using MSI Afterburner. There are format and quality options to choose from.

100% JPG: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5502/14222821290_bd4c3ca191_o.jpg

100% PNG: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5578/14408140192_9d5ed43732_o.png

There's a slight difference with camera positioning and motion blur, but otherwise, the quality looks very indistinguishable. The only difference am seeing is with the cpu/gpu overlay - it has a more solid color with png.

Am going to test MSI AB with gedosato next.

Thanks to this thread, specifically sertopico, I've been playing through NOLF after many years. It's amazing how much this game gets right and although it is showing its age, it's still a very fun experience. It nails the spy genre, covering pretty much every trope, airplanes, exploding airplanes, trains, space bases, underwater, secret island bases etc etc. It's very funny at times, the story is groovy and the characters for the most part memorable. It still does some amazing things with dynamic music that not many games have replicated (the soundtrack is fantastic too) It's not perfect though, you can play it like a pseudo stealth game, trying to kill as few enemies as you can, but this is limited by the engine at times. Also the driving sections are terrible, they add nothing, the female assassins end up serving no real purpose and the last few levels feel a tad rushed., (the ending throws a lot of information at you at once). Also technical thing, you can't downscale it, which sucks.

Might have to go through NOLF2 soon, although I know I didn't enjoy it as much as the original last time around. (change in cate's voice, respawning enemies, weapons nowhere near as fun). Shame we may never see NOLF 3, would love to see what could be done with it today, although only if they get original Cate voice back.

I've been away for way too long, things have really moved forward!
It also seems my flickr has been fucked since the last time I logged in.

Hey bud, all of those images are really compressed, and this thread doesn't allow compressed JPEGs.

Imgur compresses images automatically. Alternative file hosts which don't compress images that you could check out are Sta.sh, and Flickr.

Also, the shots from Spin Tyres don't appear to actually be downsampled from 4K based on the aliasing that's present.

I've posted my JPEG comparison of FastStone vs Photoshop here.

And I definitely agree that FastStone is a pretty great program and super handy. When not using photoshop, it's definitely my favorite program for doing resizes and stuff like that to images.

Been using FastStone ImageViewer/ Image Converter since i was in college back in 2009, damn great program to this day!

Also really useful to snip a screenshot of a cutout section of your screen or screenshot an entire "scrollable" page from top to bottom too!

I haven't played much of this game due to having tons of graphical issues. Turns out changing from temporal SMAA to 2xMSAA solves those issues, so I can actually play it. Here are a few test shots I took.
