2015 NBA Draft |OT| The Resurrection of the Lakers

But what the hell is the point with gunning for a 6-8 seed?

Oh I agree with you that its nothing to savor. Just saying they could/should make the playoffs if healthy. Then again that team has sucked for a while now, they haven't made the playoffs since a nonfat Felton led them there. Just making it surely would be good for the fans

edit: My bad. forgot about the sweep by the Miami Heat

I think Charlotte permanently took themselves out of the tanking game when they went 7 and whatever for Brow and still ended up with the 2nd pick.

As great as it is to talk about hypothetically tanking and finding a superstar, we've seen how that goes with Philly (and CLT has seen it firsthand as well). Tanking doesn't sell tickets. The team hasn't won a playoff game in over a decade. It's great to say "why make the playoffs if you're not a title contender", but at the end of the day, only one team can win.

Look, I think Charlotte should have taken the deal, if only because they could have gotten a boatload of picks and maintained the flexibility they have now. But they clearly think Kaminsky is a rare talent. And we don't know Boston's exact offer - what if it was 16, 28, Brooklyn's 2018 pick, and another lottery protected first rounder? I can see why that might not be compelling to MJ.

I love what Philly is doing, just so you know where I'm coming from, but it does take a dedicated owner to put up with that, and it does suck for the fans. That said- if you really think the point is to win a chip, then I totally agree.

TRUST

THE

PROCESS

Hinkie over everything.

Hinkie just gonna fuck around for a decade and keep fooling people with that TRUST THE PROCESS shit. The process so far has been to lose lose lose and hope to eventually land a top 10 talent.

we call that the Cleveland plan of failing into success. Unlike the whole Lebron thing, the 76ers don't have a hall of fame homer to do something with those picks like Cleveland did.

I used to be sold on the process but I'm not so sure anymore. What happens if we're in year 5 of the process and Hinkie just has a bunch of decent big men but no superstar? Not to mention what this is doing to the mentality of players being drafted by the Sixers.

As a filthy casual, I watched the draft last night. The 76ers drafted no one but centers. Uh, what's the plan with that?

Don't the have Embiid, Noel, and Saric?

Meh. What does he really have to show for it? What if Embiid never plays a game this season? Okafor will be good, but they'll have had 4 straight years of garbage for what? One good low post guy who MIGHT turn out to be the second coming of Al Jefferson?

I guess I'm judging the process on the results, which isn't the right way to look at it, but too many of these processes haven't resulted in shit (Charlotte in 2011, Philly so far).

A ton of assets, basically a clean book re: cap space, and Nerlens + Oak which is a damn good front line.

I'd take it.

FYI, Hinkie was hired by the 76ers 25 months ago. People act like he's been tanking forever, but it's really just been 2 seasons thus far.

yeah but he completely tanked. Like, this is some of the worst (best?) tanking ever seen in the history of the league. Most teams would have something to show after +2 seasons of tanking, even the cavs started looking promising with Kyrie, Wiggins, Waiters, and Bennett line up. You could see where that could've gone on to do some interesting things.

but this? this is just bad.

Hornets have a clean cap sheet following this season as well. They're going to try to make some noise this season with the Kemba/MKG/Big Al core. If it doesn't work, I have no doubt that MJ is going to blow out the front office and coaching staff and let those FAs listed above walk. He'll rebuild around Kemba, MKG and free agents.

Like I said, I would have taken the offer because all of the above still applies AND we'd have a ton of picks making the job that much more attractive if it comes open.

But MJ clearly fell in love with Kaminsky, so as a Hornets fan, I have to hope he's a beast.

To be fair the Cavs were stupidly lucky with their drafts. I mean you just named three #1 draft picks.

The Cavs had the #1 overall pick in 3 out of 4 years! That's just some dumb luck.

And I don't remember anyone criticizing Hinkie for taking Embiid at #3 last year. Many said he would have gone #1 overall if not for the injuries. That hasn't panned out thus far, but that doesn't mean it wasn't the right move.

well, at least they drafted something that looked like a team. 76ers keep drafting big men like there's no tomorrow.

I agree that the plan is failing them so far but in the past three drafts, that ended up with them taking Noel, Embiid and now Okafor, the Sixers made arguably the best choice based on who was available. They just got kind of screwed this year by the Lakers when they took Russell instead of Okafor but I feel like anyone else the Sixers could've taken would have been a reach at 3.

Listening to Ford and Russilo draft recap, they make a good point about Mudiay playing in China and getting advice from ex players there how on hard it is to make the NBA. Mudiay understanding how this is what happens if you fail in the NBA. He has first hand experience and understands that this is a job. Let's see if he pans out

This has to be bullshit. There's no way a GM could make this offer, and then another GM to turn it down. lol

Money may not have worked out.

This is the NBA not NFL, 90% of draft picks are bench or meh role players. Not really worth the trade if you really have no real way of knowing what's going to be there.

Idk why people are giving up on embiid when the only thing thats been reported is that his foot hasnt healed as fast as they wanted

There is no setback, and hes been playing fine with it, its just not healing as fast as they thought which happens a lot

Because it's rumored that he'll have to miss another season and foot injuries can ruin a big man.

Thought Emoji Movie was good. Take that as you will.
That franchise is just entertainment for you guys so you can say shit like "lel lower your expectations"

There's no plan for the team. When they signed Melo they said they wanted to compete and most fans had pipe dreams of the team trying to make some noise in the 2015 FA. That team doesn't even have an NBA caliber player outside of Melo, how are you supposed to convince someone to come here? But hey that's fine, plans change. So you're going to tank and rebuild through the draft. We're fine with that

Except you don't even do that right and walk away with Kristaps fucking Porzingis when you could have had KAT, Jahlil or Russell.

That franchise is a mess and will never have a winning culture as long as Dolan is alive. I just wish fellow New Yorkers would wipe their hands of that garbage franchise like I did. It's not even worth it.

Waaa..wait. How exactly is it that the Knicks could have had KAT, Jahlil or Russell?

If the ping pong balls fell a different way??

I think they made the right pick.. I'm not as high on Winslow as some here are.. but it's a higher ceiling pick in my eyes than the guys who were drafted after him.

It was a 3 man draft and you had pick #4.. that shit happens.

History states that 80% of all lottery picks won't be all-stars and of top 5 picks from 2001 to 2010 only 20 out of 50 were all-stars. Less than 50% pan out to be good enough to make a single all-star team.

Expecting the world from the draft is stupid... there's been very few guys to come in an contribute day 1 from the draft.

People miss more than they hit.. getting mad because you drafted KP over Winslow or Mudiay? I don't think a lot of people had Winslow coming off at 4... I think people thought it might have been Mudiay.. but KP and Mudiay both have a lot to develop in their game.. but at least KP can shoot.

One of the picks might've been an unprotected from Brooklyn, a potential lottery team. Boston is also a potential lottery team.

You take their picks and run instead of going for Frank Kaminsky. who might've even still been available had they moved down. lol

Let's just say the historical track record of bigs with lingering foot/lower leg injuries is not at all promising.

Also this isn't an injury that has been solved by medical science like ACLs or something. Sometimes bones in these parts of the body just never heal properly

Ainge is an idiot if he offered 4 fucking picks for a draft pic , that's just bs
Offer that to a proven player , not an NCAA unproven player , anyone can be a bust

Kaminsky is god so Jordan won too :p

That vid on the last page was amazing, if only I were tall :( , someone with a beard x height of like 7 foot put a gasol jersey on a few years back and lots of people thought he was pau gasol lol , this was at the all star game I think

If the Celtics had Winslow as the 4th best player on their board (and many had him somewhere in or around the Top 5) then the 4 picks offered is reasonable.

Put it another way, would the Knicks have accepted the same trade to move out of the #4 spot? No, no they would not have. But in the Celtics' mind, Winslow was worthy of being the #4 overall.

WTF were people expecting him to take Mudiay???

He went Best Player Available as he should have. If the Lakers don't take Russell everyone would be saying Philly is on the right track with Russell/Noel/Embid

"Rumoured" hell have to miss another season even though everything coming from the sixers and embiids camp said that he didnt even reinjure anything and everything is basically saying he should be back by the season opener!

But rumours guys!

''It was healing on a steady, upward sloping curve,'' Hinkie said Friday. ''It doesn't seem to be healing as well anymore. The way they're describing it to me is, we'd have expected it to be healed, even more healed, than what it's showing now.''

Hinkie said surgery has not been ruled out and a course of action would be decided ''soon'' after Embiid meets with a North Carolina specialist.

He could be ready by the season opener but none of this should instill much confidence.

Russillo and Chad Ford's draft recap podcast today gave some insight into why Ainge was salty as fuck the Hornets didn't take his offer. The gist of it is that next year's draft is weak and all of Boston's picks are likely to be outside of the top 10. Brad Stevens is too good of a coach such that Boston will never finish poorly enough to have a legit shot at top 3-5 pick. Brooklyn, knowing they don't have any incentive to tank, is doubling down on getting at least the 8th seed next year, and even if they miss out on the playoffs, their record will make it so there is little chance for that pick to be anything more than in the late lottery.

While it's a great idea to think you can trade all these picks to get into the top 5 to draft a superstar, the reality is that most of the teams up there, in a well-liked draft, are loathe to trade their pick. They want superstars too.

Ainge doesn't have real bonafide assets to be able to draft a superstar, and he knows it.

Yeah good listen, I hope the draft isn't very weak Raptors need to maximize that Knicks pick

I think these are fair points, Ainge needs to hope something like the James Harden opportunity comes up again.

What's "weak" about next year's draft? Are we talking no potential superstars, a dearth of quality players, or both? And it's not 2013 bad, right?

The 2015 high school class is generally considered weak in terms of one-and-done talents, and there's no real great college players coming out either. Ben Simmons, a 6'10" SF/PF who will be a freshman at LSU, is thought of as the unquestioned #1 pick at this juncture, and then it's a bunch of meh.

It could obviously change.

msdstc

Incredibly Naive
What's hilarious about all those picks being offered, is if Ainge wasn't such a moron, they easily could've finished in the top 10 if they hadn't made a push for a few extra dollars by securing their first round sweep.

The incoming HS class outside of Ben Simmons is not highly rated, but you never now how the college season goes. Nobody expected Karl Anthony Towns and especially DAngelo Russell to go 1 and 2 a year ago.
