I just got an XPS 15 (9560) in recently, and it's my first charge up.

Why's this power supply ringing? It's just faintly there. Really weird. Is it normal for these, or should I call Dell and get a replacement for it?

Electrical noise?

Definitely call Dell -- it can be an indication of a few things but it's never intended.

Does anyone know of an i7 (gen 6/7) laptop with a gtx1070 that doesn't have massive heat issues under load?
A common theme I am reading about while researching, especially with the Asus ROG series, would be cpu/gpu temps hitting +90 Celsius. While I am aware heat is always a issue with laptops the thinner you get but it seems with the latest batch of gaming laptops are even more prone to heat & throttling then before.

I'm curious what manufacturers would you recommend (lenovo, MSI, gigabyte, ect...)?

Or any solutions you may have that will not require scaling back gaming performance?
I would be disappointed to invest in a 1070 laptop only to have to downclock it an get the same performance as a 1060 laptop.

MSI GT series is the god-tier of cooling right now. Unequaled.

What is your laptop budget?

I have been looking mostly at MSI, I have far more faith in their parts than whatever Asus uses... I could be way off base with that perception tho.

Roughly $2200 CAD give or take, preferably taxes included (12%).

I got the MSI GE72mvr. Think it's coming in this week, but yeah, it's exactly what you're looking for and I've never heard of any issues with it. Canada Computers carries it (though they're mostly sold out in Ontario right now) and they often discount it for $100-$200 like every week putting it in your price range.

How much did you pay if you don't mind answering?
Hmmmm I haven't been checking Canada Computers, just mostly newegg, amazon, ncix. Thanks for the heads up on that.

Was about $2200 when I put money down on it and ended up being around $2500 including tax. YMMV depending on when you catch one since the base price fluctuates by $100-$200 literally every week. Dont thinm it goes lower than that though.

Anything wrong with https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MS7NSZ8/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=APTJB2SEQO65W&psc=1

It seems to have a lot of good reviews, has a 1070, and doesn't have that "gaming laptop" appearance. It's also on Amazon, which I have spendable rewards points, unless there is a significantly deal elsewhere.

I'm from the US, would prefer something from Amazon if possible, 15 inch range (17 is too big), want something actually portable, and doesn't look ridiculous. I also need the computer asap as my current pc has kersploded. Not thrilled about buying a PC now, but I need it now. Let's say 2k budget max.

Yeah that one looks good, go for it. MSI GE series also has some great similar options in that price range of you're interested. Not really gamer looking outside of the light up keys.

My personal question is: is investing in a cooling pad worth it? And if so which one.

Went to Best Buy today to pick up an iPad Mini 4 128GB for my wife. While I was there, I was checking out their laptops to see if anything caught my fancy.

This Alienware 17.3", R4...
i7 7700HQ
16GB RAM
GTX 1070
IPS display with eye tracking
128GB SSD + 1TB 7200RPM HDD

Well, it was an open box from buyers remorse. So, they have it priced at $1571. Compare that to the $1399 I paid for the MSI GS63VR (gtx 1060 6GB) laptop I bought a month ago.

$172 difference, for a better screen, better GPU... well, I took it!! I'll spend a few days to compare them, but the screen and sound is miles apart from the MSI.

You aren't going to find another 120Hz G-Sync w/ a 1070 in that range. Looks good to me. Eluktronics is a Clevo rebrand, so the laptop will be reliable.

Why not build one of these instead? You'd get a real GPU that way.

Not sure if you picked up a new laptop but back in February Micro Center had a great deal on a Acer Predator 17" $1399 and it runs very cool and quiet under load, I know it's not a popular pick but I couldn't resist such a amazing deal and very happy with it so far.
I know they have a newer model for $1899 which is too expensive for my taste but if you live near one I would go check them out.
They do have a 15" model on sale right now for $1399 , can't say this model runs as cool but it's worth checking out in my opinion.

Though this model has a 1060 instead of the 1070

Did any of you guys got a chance to use Nvidia whisper mode through Geforce experience? The new Nvidia driver apparently enabled it on the GTX 10 series mobile and desktop graphics cards. I tried wit watch dogs 2 and it seems to lower performance slightly but the GPU ran significantly cooler and quieter. I am impressed. I would be interested in knowing how it's fairing with other laptops here.

My GeForce Experience has been broken for a few months. I've wiped it, reinstalled multiple times and every time I try and launch it it says something went wrong and I need restart it.

What does whisper mode do to your GPU clocks?

I am going to be abroad from October 2017 until March 2018 and thinking about buying a gaming laptop. I saw something about nvidia Max-Q designs but they are not yet readily available in Austria (I can also order from Germany). I'd like to have Nvidia g-sync 120 hz and be able to play Rocket League. 15.3" is big enough. I was also looking for Zen/Vega notebooks but they seem to come out late in the year/next year.

I was also wondering about the notebook market in Tokyo/Japan. Are notebooks cheaper/more expensive compared to Europe? Does anyone have any experience?

I still find it ridiculous that Dell's "gaming-focused" Inspiron doesn't support eGPUs even if it's just a proprietary Alienware Graphics Amplifier port. I'd be seriously reconsidering my Alienware 13 purchase if the 1050ti in the Inspiron wasn't what I'd be stuck with forever.

Been looking at 1060 and 1070 laptops, but Im starting to wonder if that is overkill for me. All I want to run is Dolphin/ps2 emulator and the two Ori games on steam. Is the 1060 or 1070 needed for those?

Also wanting something that will run dolphin/ps2 for an hour or more without throttling...

Yes, those would be overkill for what you're looking to use the laptop for.

What's the budget? Neither G-Sync or 120Hz come cheaply, especially in Europe. You may want to look up Schenker/XMG laptops in your region.

You DO NOT want to wait until you get to Japan, to purchase a computer.

And that is exactly why they do it, because otherwise they'd only have gotten Inspiron money out of you.

What's overkill today, is exactly what you need in the future. As I said to someone within the last couple pages, "Don't buy what you think you need today, buy what you can afford."

You may go from Dolphin, to Cemu, to whatever ends up emulating the Switch.

Always afford yourself room to grow, because you won't be able to upgrade the GPU later.

I'm offloading my gaming PC and getting a gaming laptop instead (moving internationally, it's just much, much easier to deal with).

I find that a lot of gaming laptops are really bulky and inconvenient. Are there are 1060/70/80 tier laptops on the market at the moment that are around 13-15", not crazy heavy and are somewhat slim? Battery life isn't really a concern.

The Razor Blade looks nice, as does the Asus ROG Zephyrus. The latter looks kind of hard to find in Australia. Anyone have any experience w/ them?

edit: bummer, the Zephyrus isn't out in Australia yet.

Thinking about getting the alienware r3 with 1060 model. My Question is how loud are the fans? Do they get really bad under load the noise I mean. Also how big is the difference between 1050Ti vs 1060? I play lot of demanding games like Battlefield 1 or witcher 3.

I have a 2015 Razor Blade with 970m and I only had bad luck with it. First off I got 3 dead pixels roughly 6 months after buying it. The left mouse button only works sporadically, the rubber feet are falling off and the keyboard sometimes registers inputs twice.

The worst however is the fan noise on load. I live on an AFB and the fans sometimes sound like a starting jet (yes that's a little exaggerated but I guess you get what I mean)...

Even though I like the form factor and I guess the sleek look I wouldn't recommend buying one, especially for that hefty price tag.

My next laptop will be either an Alienware 13 with Oled Display or an AW 15. They'e bulkier but at least the are better quality and have way better cooling/ are quieter.

The fans do get loud when playing intensive games, not jet engine level but you will definitely notice them if you haven't got sound/headphones on.

1060 will give you 1080/60 for most current games on high graphics, 1050ti you would have to drop your graphic settings down to achieve that in some of the more powerful games.

From personal experience getting the OLED Alienware 13 has been a positive one, however I haven't had enough time to really put it through it paces.

About 2k Euro. Anything coming out until about October?

I may have been wrong about what I said. Try building one of these. It comes stock with 120Hz G-Sync.

8GB RAM (16 max)

1TB 7200rpm (M.2 SSD is a option)
1080p screen (4K Screen is a option)

Dont play PC games but Overwatch (meh) plays 70-90fps on medium settings 1080p

I only looked at Firestrike but it seems like the 1050ti is slower than the 970m in my laptop. Just to give you an idea, my 970m hovers between 40 - 60fps in Witcher 3 with a mix of low and high settings @ 1080p, averaging somewhere below 50 so a 1050ti can only get you lower performance than that. I also have a desktop with a gtx 780 that averages closer to 60fps at higher settings and a 1060 should be quite a bit faster than my 780. It might be a similar jump in performance as going from my 970m to 780 (which already shows a noticeable difference)

So, an i7, 7700k, 1060 6gb, 8-16gb ram is what I should be looking for to run Dolphin/ps2, steam games (more than Ori), and maybe even cemu right now, correct?

This should also let me stream games to my nvidia shield portable or Switch if that rainway app comes out, right?

Ok I need some advice please.
I am currently looking at a msi ge62 gtx 1070 with a 256 ssd for $1999 CAD and a ge72 gtx 1070 with a 128 ssd for $2149 CAD.
I am concerned with heat and was really wanting a msi gt/ge 63 for the added fan and extra heatsinks. But all the 63 & 73 models are more than I want to pay.
So here is the question: Should I go with a 17" in the 2 series for better heat displacement or is the 16" good enough for gaming under load?

Yes to everything but I'm not sure about cemu, haven't really tested it yet but I doubt that system would have any trouble.

For streaming, I would suggest trying moonlight since it allows higher bitrates than the official app (up to 100Mbps vs 30 with the official gamestream app?). There seems to be other factors though that might make one app better than the other, but I've had a pretty good experience with moonlight.

So I couldn't pass on the deal and ended up buying the Msi GE62MVR 7RG-004CA Apache Pro for $1999 CAD (Link for those who might be interested)
http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX65203

But I have one more question left:
Is there any benefit to using a traditional multi-fan laptop cooler and a vacuum cooler as well?
I might be going nuts and over thinking the issue of heat in the laptop; but I will be playing demanding games for extended periods of time on this thing and really want to avoid potential damage and/or throttling.

I'm thinking of getting a klim vacuum cooler and a cooling pad.

So im kind in the middle of a dilemma right now.

I need a gaming laptop since im going mobile for the next a year or so (got an implementation project out of town, fun fact : odoo ! )

my local store have an ASUS ROG STRIX GL502 on sale, but its the skylake version:
Intel Core i7 6700HQ-2.6Ghz Turbo 3.5Ghz,
RAM 16GB DDR4
HDD 256GB SSD (SuperFast & AntiSchock) + 1TB
VGA nVidia GTX1070-8GB

the other one is also an ASUS ROG STRIX GL502 but not on sale, its the kabylake version:
Intel Core i7 7700HQ-2.8Ghz Turbo 3.8Ghz
RAM 8GB DDR4
HDD 128GB SSD (SuperFast & AntiShock) + 1TB
VGA nVidia GTX1060-6GB

Both are 15'6, and have almost $200 differences. Edit : actually almost $250

I believe you guys already see the dilemma. One is a skylake but with a 1070, the other one is newer version with kabylake, but with a 1060 (although the ram is 8GB, it can be easily upgraded to 16GB). I am also going to use this laptop for a long time, not only for the duration of the project. Im expecting a 4-5 years lifespan.

So GAF.. which one ?

on the side note, here's the list of the games im going to play on the laptop :
- PUBG
- GTAV
- Witcher 3
- Starcraft
- Total War series
- Battlefield 1
- Metro series (This laptop MUST be able to run Exodus)
- Should be able to play the soon to be released Assassins Creed
You got the idea..

I think most people here would say take the 1070 version foregoing the kaby lake CPU unless you're a stickler for CPU-intensive/simulation games and need the extra 0.2ghz.

Thanks, i also have simulation games which are planet coaster and cities skylines. I dont know how big an impact is an extra 0.2Ghz, i believe not much ?

I might be going nuts and over thinking the issue of heat in the laptop; but I will be playing demanding games for extended periods of time on this thing and really want to avoid potential damage and/or throttling.
Congrats on the purchase.
Don't buy a cooling pad before you get your hands on the laptop and measure the temps. If the temps are good, you won't need a cooling pad.
Both are 15'6, and have almost $250 differences.

So GAF.. which one ?
What are the prices of those laptops?
If those are really your only two choices. take the laptop with the 1070.

The discounted GL502 with i7-6700 and 1070 costs around $1600
and the newer one GL502 with kabylake and a 1060 cost around $1800 (converted from my currency). I do have another option like alienware 13 R3 with i7 kabylake and 1060, cost are also around $1800.

If they dont have the discounted GL502, then my dilemma would be between Asus ROG and Alienware 13 R3.

The 1070 laptop is the cheaper one!? Take it now, it blows the 1060 away. It also has more RAM and SSD storage than the 1060 laptop.
