2016+ Gaming Laptop Thread: Embracing Pascal's Wafer (Please Read OP)

Hi, new here... I think this is the proper gaf thread to post this question:

I have a Dell laptop (old xps l502x) that allows a secondary harddrive to be installed, replacing the optical drive. I bought a SSD harddrive. I realize it's faster, so should probably take out the main harddrive and flip the standard HDD to the optical drive slot, putting the SSD as my primary boot drive... but then I've read that SSDs have a limited lifespan and the higher IO from being a boot drive is a bad idea and I should just use it as a 'data drive'. Which do you guys recommend?

Using an SSD as a data drie is foolishness. It'd be worthless in that capacity.

p.s. - SSDs don't die man, no more than an HDD would. The one with moving parts has a bigger chance at failing.

Aight. I went ahead and ordered the MSI GT60. I'm still not a fan of the dragon logo on the back, but I'll deal.

Sweet, let us know what you think.

This is pretty much the scenario under which I bought my laptop earlier this year (Lenovo Y510P).
I'm on a phone so I can't look up specific laptops at the moment, but I can give you pointers on what to look for.

For emulation, you will require as powerful a CPU as possible (Intel Haswell i5 or i7, no U or Y cpus), and a cooling solution capable of cooling both the CPU and GPU at max load without thermal throttling. The GPU only needs to be good enough like the GTX860M or even as low as the GT750M.
I have an i7-4700mq, 2.4GHz with 3.3GHz dual core turbo. Either an i5 or an i7 is fine so long as it's Haswell and the clock speed is high.
Oh yeah? Why can I emulate Games like mk dd metroid Prime Zelda tp WW F Zero and PM ttyd then at always Full Speed with my i5 4210u?

Hello friends, not 100% a gaming laptop question but hope this is an okay place to ask. Most likely picking up a Zenbook UX303LA soon and its 128GB stock SSD is far too anemic. It seems to have an empty mSATA slot for upgrades, which I'm not familiar with. Just wanted to check before I purchase, but would I be able to drop something like this in with no problems?

Because Intel and the Dolphin team are wizards.
If an i5-4210u can run Burnout 3: Takedown on PCSX2 at full speed, then I will be impressed.

Why does that impress you? Have 90% the time stable 60 FPS ( in that town 58 FPS). Game looks great for a PS2 game but its nothing special, there are many more impressive GC games! Even when there's a lot of smoke or sparks which I guess draws the most performance it maintains 60 FPS.

@K.Jack well, I don't have anything to rip off my own Wii CD and if I want to download one in the internet there's slow ass speed and because they are 4 GB big.. no thanks. But I'd like to try out tho!

I'm considering getting back into PC gaming with a new laptop. The new ASUS g751 with the 970m is looking really good, especially at the $1500 price point. I have a couple of questions:

Is 3-4 years of 1080p gaming 40+fps a reasonable expectation out of this purchase?
Do you all think the 3gb vram of the 970m in the g751 will be an issue soon (1-2 years?), should I get a 6gb vram 970m instead to be safe?

Sorry if these have been asked before! Things have changed a bit since my last gaming laptop purchase...XPS m1710 with 256mb geforce go 7900 gs (It still works somehow!)

Well, that's the first I've heard of an ultra low voltage processor doing near full-speed emulation of one of the PS2's hardest games to emulate. That's impressive.
Nonetheless, it sounds like you're just barely hitting 60FPS, so for emulation I'd still recommend something more powerful than a U processor - at least until the next generation of processors. The Y processors are still a definite no.
As for impressiveness, well, you've just started the game. Things get crazier later on.

Out of curiosity, what laptop do you have, and what temperatures do you get during emulation?

That's probably because I'm a enthusiast user. Most people with laptops priced from 500-1000$ don't even know how much power is behind their machine, you know? I'm different. And I actually use that power and share it with you guys who are thinking ULV CPUs are still clocked at 1.6 GHz and are extremly weak.

If these CPUs would be actually clocked at 1.6 GHz, they would be weak but they do only in battery mode, plugged in both cores with hyper threading are at steady 2.4 GHz which isn't bad at all. If you compare it to a standard voltage laptop cpu, the only difference is the lower clock speed (2.4 GHz instead of say, 3 GHz)

The Y Processors are a different story tho, they have no turbo boost and actually really stay at 1.X ghz. That's weak.

To be honest, when I bought the lappy I thought the CPU is not weak but not powerful either and it will do my tasks with some cut backs. But after actually trying it, I love it. I get never CPU bottlenecked in my recent AAA games(besides of Unity a bit in large crowds) and video editing is also very fast.

Well if thats the hardest game to emulate, that's not bad at all, isn't it? The CPU usage was around 50-60% when full speed and about 60-70% when in the 50's. Max temperature I got with a few races (man, this game is fun and the particle system is impressive for PS2) is 65 Grad Celsius. Most of the time I had 60 FPS.

Laptop is Acer V5-573G with i5 4210U and GTX 850M. It was one of the most popular laptops in Germany last year, but with a slower hardware (i5 4200U, GT 750M)

Saw that before the edit. Read the first section of my OP, then ask yourself why you need a gaming laptop.

Yeah you never get an i7, an 850M, and 1080p for £500.

Ah that's nice to know.

For anyone wondering, the brand I want with is known as Hasee. They seem to be similar to Clevo but Chinese rather than Taiwanese, however I am quite happy with the quality of the laptop so far. It seems well put together. Would recommend it to anyone who happens to be travelling through China and fancies getting a new laptop

However, one should note that there is one downside, in that the laptop came without Windows installed and it took a while to set it up since their driver CDs are a bit crappy

I forgot to archive the chat, but I was told that PCSpecialist may not even update the Optimus V laptop with the GTX 960m if the 860m turns out to be very popular.

That is not good news for me, since I really like the Optimus V but want to wait for it to be updated :(

Wait you guys are missing a big piece of that puzzle. Gsync works only with the MSI GT72, because it doesn't use Optimus for its GPU switching. Gsync won't work with any Optimus laptop.

I'm confused on this part with Optimus, I thought that the Clevo laptops with SLI didn't use Optimus. At least I've seen that mentioned a few times which is what had me believing that. Am I correct or does it still use it somehow?

I have a laptop with Intel I7-2670QM 2.20Ghz, 6Gb ram and a nvidia geforce gt 540m 1gb. I am planning in getting a new one. Could someone recommend a good gaming laptop, it not necesary must be a high-end. It could sound weird but a really dont need that achieve 60 fps.

You might see an extra deal or two from some of the resellers. If you're not in a rush it won't hurt to wait the short period to see if you can get any extra savings.

It's still hard to say how long cards will last, because we still haven't hit the point where all games are being developed for current gen consoles only. But it's hard to believe a card as fast as the 970M wouldn't last.

I'd feel better with a 6GB card, as ridiculous as that sounds. Seems like 4GB will become the minimum VRAM requirement in a year.

Thanks. Besides price is there any advantage to upgrading the main stock SSD instead of dropping in additional space in the mSATA slot (any speed disadvantages etc)?
Nope.

Though, I've never seen a reason to have two SSDs in one laptop.

They will update, because their competition will, and the don't want to lose a high volume of sales.

Here's a "I want a laptop" post

Country: USA
Maximum budget: $700
Max size: 15"-17" screen
Planned usage: LAN gaming at "Low" settings as described in the OP 30fps minimum. The usual LAN rotation is COD4:MW, Quake 2, Quake 3, UT2k4, Killing Floor, Borderlands 1 and 2 (Rare), and Planetary Annihilaton

Misc: I don't care about battery life, fan noise, etc but I need a number pad (old MMO Macros).

Let me know if there's anything parts or manufacturer wise I should be aware of.

Lyte Edge

All I got for the Vernal Equinox was this stupid tag
After some considerations I ordered a Sager NP8651/Clevo P650SE. Hopefully I won't be disappointed. I expect to receive it by the end of next week.

I got a Sager NP7338 a few months back. Wanted a small gaming-class laptop (it's 13.3") and have not been disappointed. It has been able to run every game I've thrown at it at 1920x1080 on high/ultra settings.

Yeah the Clevo P650SE is a pretty sexy machine.

Any feedback from a Asus G751 owner ? I've watched some benchmarks and a single 980m seems to perform quite well, even with demanding games like Unity.

I need to buy a 17' laptop soon and it will be either that or MSI GT72 (which has a TN screen as opposed to the IPS screen of the G751)

I didn't see that.

Country USA
Budget $900-$1300
Max Size 15-17
Usage Schoolwork and gaming. But basically i dont move a lot the laptop, most of the time is in my desk.

It doesnt matter that i cant play the games in ultra or high

The GT72 wins against the G751, in everything but the screen. Unfortunately only the expensive GT72 SKUs have the IPS panels, at least for right now. The TN panel of the lower SKUs has really bad viewing angles. For that reason, if you have to buy right now, right now I'd G751.

If the cheaper GT72s ever get the IPS panels, it wins in a landslide.

That a good question, but there have been times where i had to bring the laptop to the university or to other places, and for times like that having a laptop was really helpful. Also where I live is expensive to get thing like graphic cards or processors for gaming, but I have someone that can buy the laptop in the usa, and bring to my country, Ecuador.

Okay.

At $1300 I'd take this.

If you take the next step up, you can double your GPU power for $1499.

In case any of you are interested here's HTWingNut's review (from notebookreview forums) of the Sager NP8651/Clevo P650SE laptop. This review is actually what sold me on the P650SE based on the measured temperatures (peak temps of around 60°C on the GTX 970m at stock!). I'll let you guys know if I get similar results on mine.

Nice machine, but the screen looks really disappointing. I can't stand poor viewing angles.

I'd probably upgrade it to one of the IPS people have been buying for the Y50.

Yeah, and besides the G751 is less pricey.

As much as I love the GT72 design and finition, I'm not paying more for an inferior screen. No fucking way MSI.

I'll know which one for sure after the holidays but the MSI one is the one I'm gunning for.

I always have to ask this:

Not sure if this was meant for me but honestly a small form factor desktop would also work for me. My desktop + parts + monitor is 40 pounds/18 Kg and carrying the beast up a couple flights of stairs is getting real old.

Turns out my Clevo P650SE will arrive tomorrow. That's much sooner than I expected considering that I placed my order on Xoticpc just two days ago and I didn't pay extra for rush order and shipping.

Country: USA
Maximum budget: <$400 (cheaper the better)

Misc: Touch screen would be nice. Possibly HDMI out.

Just saw the HP Stream 14 and didn't know if that would be a viable solution. Thanks in advance.

Strongly considering getting a Thinkpad Yoga 14 for:

Sports games (NBA 2K and PES mostly)
GTA V
Project CARS

and older stuff like Skyrim.

My main priorities are 1) smaller form factor and portability 2) inconspicuous design (no flashing lights)

Does anyone have a compelling reason not to?

If the GTAV PC port is anything like the GTA4 one, you're probably going to need something more powerful than that.

Literally just got my Sager NP8651/Clevo P650SE. My first impression is that it's very large for a 15.6" laptop. That being said, keep in mind that while this laptop is lighter and thinner compared to other comparable 15.6" Sager notebooks it is bigger in appearance overall.

@K. Jack - Before, based on your recommendations, I was going to wait for the Optimus V to be updated with the GTX960m. I was thinking of getting one with the following specs: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/quotes/747111/

Just to clarify, I want a gaming laptop where I will only use it for:
- video editing & animation
playing games such as MGSV: Ground Zeroes/The Phantom Pain at 1080p/locked 60fps on high settings if possible

However, since I'm still waiting for the GTX960m to release, I'm thinking of saving up more money to buy the VortexIV with the following specs:

https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/quotes/747113/

So, do you think the specs for VortexIV are good enough to run PC games at high settings at 1080p/locked 60fps? Even if high settings can't be done, it's still okay, but 1080p/locked 60fps is a must.

Or is the Optimus V laptop better quality regardless of its spec? Basically, is the VortexIV a quaity laptop in itself?

I've got more questions such as cooling pads, etc. but I'll save them after you reply to this.

It's impossible to promise you a locked 60fps. I can say that the system reqs ask for a GTX 760, and the 970M should crush that card. But we'll be finding out for sure on December 18th.

As far as other games, I do know it will 60fps the new Dragon Age.

If I could afford a 970M, I wouldn't be waiting for a weaker card.

I understand - it's impossible to know at this stage. Thanks! That's good enough for me. Would the cooling pad be good enough for this laptop or is it not important to get a specific one?

I'm not sure if you can answer this, but would there be a way to turn off the LED lights on the keyboard for the VortexIV?

Also, I need some cleaning advice. What do I use to clean things such as the screen or keys, should they get dusty? Also, what do I use to clean the inside such as the components like the fan, graphics card, etc? Is there a recommended time for how frequently we should clean the internal components to maintain the laptop?

Is there a recommended time for how frequently we should clean the internal components to maintain the laptop?

Oh, I forgot the pad part, about which I feel strongly. Don't buy one. Any laptop that needs a cooling pad to stay cool is one you shouldn't buy. I can guarantee you this particular laptop has no use for one. If you need something to rest it on, buy a wooden lap table from Amazon.

I don't know of any laptop that allows you to turn off the LED lights. As far as I know, you can only control the keyboard backlight.

For my screen I use plain old nasal tissue, or a microfiber eyeglass rag. Keyboard I use baby wipes.

Fans I remove and use damp paper towels. Heatsinks grilles I remove then use micro-tools to pull out the dust. and blow air through them.

I'd say do it every 6 months, or just do what I do and wait until you notices temps getting higher lmao.

Thanks!

Something like this would do, right? http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00IIOUZY6/

Also, thank you for all those cleaning tips :D

Lastly, I forgot to ask this question but when I'm gaming ,is it true that the performance will be reduced if I play on battery power? If so, would you recommend playing it on AC power only and removing the battery? I'm not sure how all this works.
