That's what I'm asking you. I mean, this is a great notebook for a non-gamer type.
oh i agree thats a great laptop, but she says 15.6in screen is more important
personally i like 14 inches

I have a Lenovo Y510P and I always hear a hissing through my headphones whenever the sound is unmuted, not just when sound is actually playing. I hear silence when the sound is muted. This is because Lenovo cheaped out on the headphone out; the only workarounds are to have headphones with a volume control to reduce the hissing, or purchase a USB DAC.I have an odd issue with my new Lenovo laptop. Whenever I start a video clip or a game (before sound starts coming through) I can hear this weird low static in my earphones, like the system is boosting audio output without filtering it (it stops right sfter closing the game/video). My old one (a Lenovo as well, though with Win7) didn't do that. Is this some sort of Win8.1 'feature'? Did I mess up my driver install? Do I need to turn off some setting?
It's a B50-45. Yes, I only hear the hissing just before a sound starts playing. If I click on a youtube vid, the earphones start hissing just as the vid loads, and they keep hissing as long as the tab is open. Also, the sound is very loud, a lot louder than my old Lenovo. I dropped volume down to 16% and I still have to lower volume from within a game's menu. It seems the driver applies a heavy-duty boost to the anemic laptop speakers. Unfortunately, I use earphones. However, your situation may be different. Which Lenovo do you have? Do you hear the hissing only when a sound is playing? Do you hear the hissing when you play an extremely quiet sound?
Tried it, didn't seem to do anything. :\Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar and click "Playback Devices". Right-click the device representing your speakers/headphones and click "Properties". In the "Enhancements" tab, disable all sound effects. If there's a Dolby tab, turn it off (not glowing).
Thanks for pointing that out -- I'd already looked into that and (as far as I can tell) there are no duties on electronics so long as they're for personal use. Will give the Customs office a call on Monday though to be sure.

Looking at notebook checker that r7 m260 isn't very good for modern games.
Best thing to do when spec checking is stype the graphics card name into google. The first link is normally a link to notebook checker and the page will have tons of benchmark fps results on it for a wide range if games.
Edit
I got my laptop from pcspecialist.co.UK and I recommend them. I got an optimus v model a year ago with gtx765m. Now they come with the 8xx version which I think is about 26% better.
Thanks, I looked at noteboocheck first and wasn't too impressed either. However, when I searched around the APU itself it seemed to be able to play games like Skyrim at max settings at 1080p with a 30FPS which seemed to be great. Same with Witcher 2. It was playing Watchdogs at 1080p high settings at around 17-20 FPS. That's why I'm confused.
I looked at the website you linked but the laptops there are a bit too expensive I'm afraid as the price goes up ridiculously after adding a quadcore processor.
That's actually what I did in the first place, since the laptop was sold bare (w/o OS). I'll see whether a reinstall will fix anything. But try doing a clean install of your sound drivers.
would the people who bought the Nitro mind posting some impressions? Also how long are you guys planning on keeping it for?
I should get mine on Monday or Tuesday and I'll post some impressions. I plan on having it last anywhere from 3-5 years but you never know.
Thanks for the response K.Jack. So looking at my final configuration, this is about where I would end up..
Intel® Haswell Core i7-4800MQ (2.7GHz - 3.7GHz, 6MB Intel® Smart Cache)
NVIDIA® GeForce GTX 870M (3.0GB) GDDR5 PCI-Express DX11 w/ Optimus Technology
16GB DDR3 1600MHz [SKU-818EP] (Dual Channel Memory (2x8GB SODIMMS))
128GB Solid State mSATA
1TB 7200RPM (SATA III - 6GB/s)
6x Blu-Ray Burner + 8x DVDRW/CDRW Super Multi Combo Drive
Trinkets
32GB Drive Pen (Free)
Full Size Notebook Cooler for 17 inch Laptops (35 dollars) (worth it?)
MSI Interceptor DS100 Gaming Mouse (Free, would sell I guess)
Cost would be around 1500. Is that a sound price? I think I should add that in general, 90 percent of my usage for this computer is listening to music, browsing or watching movies with my gaming habits being mostly minor (think running sonic generations or something), so i'm wondering if this setup is a bit overkill. It's just the earliest model I saw that mentions having good speakers and such. Are there other benefits to having a beefy GPU outside of gaming? I'm more so looking for an excellent media computer that has a nice screen, great speakers, and won't buckle when I have 30 tabs open in a browser, but also will work under those loads years down the road.
1500 isn't too bad though, just want to make sure i'm not splurging when I don't have to, i'm basically wanting something future proof for normal middle ground gaming usage (so nothing too modern on that front)
Dear fellow Canadians,
I'm looking for a new laptop to buy so I can study and learn animation @ college. Some of the courses I'll be taking require me to use up to 7 virtual machines at a time and for the animation a high end graphics card is required. Hence I assume an i7 processor would be required too.
The OP posted about the sager laptop option and I'm looking towards going for that. I presume the primary outlet for that in Canada is xoticpc.com. Thinking of going for this build.
I don't need it until early Jan of next year, should I jump on this... or will there for sure be a better sale in December? Thanks in advance.

I can't seem to find ANY reviews of the HP 14t (2014 version), and it seems to be a somewhat interesting ~$800 option for:
-14 inch, 1080 display
- i7-4510U Dual Core Processor + 4GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M Graphics
- 750GB hybrid drive
- 8GB DDR3L
(no backlit keyboard though)
But the lack of opinions online is weird. I see one unboxing video on Youtube and that's it, the rest are reviews of the older model. I'm most interested in the screen quality and the differences between the 840M and GTX 850M since the former would make this a ~$700 laptop more in my price range (would also make it an i5 instead). Overall build quality comments would also help me feel better about dropping $700-800 on this thing.

how is that $800 to you? says $549 on my screen. Even at that price I would avoid it though
Anyone have any experience with Sager laptops? They seem very cost effective and was planning on buying the Asus Gtx 970m laptop but saw that the 980m wagers aren't much different in price.
When you say mediocre she'll, do you mean just lackluster in looks, or mechanically subpar?Amazing price for great components, but said parts are wrapped inside of a mediocre shell.

Anyone have any experience with the Acer Aspire Nitro V15? It's on sale for $959 on their store so was thinking about it.
I'd be using it with Adobe CC programs like Premiere and After Effects along with using it to capture game footage along with usual uses.
I got my Aspire Nitro V15 last night. (the one that was on sale for 899 at Newegg. I wish I saw the Tablet deal for $10 more before my order got processed....gahhh) Been spending most of my time downloading games/software and configuring settings. I'll give some basic impressions now. Later when I start playing some games (Shogun 2: TW, AC: Unity, and Dark Souls w/ DSFix) and/or doing benchmarks I'll post some performance figures.
Keep in mind that I'm a bit of a casual PC gamer relative to some of the folks here on GAF. I play some hardcore or esoteric shit but I'm not super concerned about playing the latest games on Ultra settings at 1080p60. I would like to game at 720p60 at a minimum going forward, but I'm pretty forgiving graphics-wise. Also I'm coming from a 4 year old 17 inch monster that could barely play anything anymore so it's an added breath of fresh air.
First things I did were uninstalling the included Acer apps/bloatware and updating the nvidia display drivers with the latest official version.

Re: speakers, I got the Deepcool laptop cooler/speakers with my purchase, and I highly recommend it so far. It's a big upgrade over your typical laptop speakers combined with a good surface/cooling fan and provides an extra USB 2.0 port for quite cheap.
Overall, I'm pretty happy with this system so far. I'll update with gaming impressions once I have those, but you can do much, much worse for this price point. Feel free to ask if you want any specific details.

I appreciate you giving these impressions! Really helps out other people who are looking at the same notebooks.
But I must tell you, 79C is actually really good for a gaming laptop. Well above average.
Let me know when you hear back from Customs, and we'll figure something out.
I'm glad for your praise K.Jack. You've been very helpful to many of us (myself included) so it's nice to pay it forward.
I suppose my gauge for what constitutes appropriate gaming laptop temps is a bit off. I'd been spending the past year trying to get my busted up Qosmio to keep from boiling itself just running VLC or playing HL2 or whatever. Like I said though, 79C wasn't really worrying me. The CPU temp is what I'll need to pay attention to most likely. If it's a problem/results in throttling hopefully I can figure out a way to undervolt the CPU and overclock the GPU ever so slightly.
So it turns out that while there aren't any duties on electronics themselves, Customs requires us to pay a goods and services tax, which is a percentage of the original cost of the product. Anyway, when that's added atop the cost of shipping, buying from Xotic PC would cost me the same as buying from here.
My intention was to go with this model. Pretty outrageous that I'm paying almost exactly $1000 USD more for it either way, buying from the US or from here, than someone living in the US would. Though I suppose that's one of the negatives of living so far away from everywhere else...
What about laptops ordered from Austraila? Do you have to pay that, even then?
Been shopping in some Australian shops. The cheapest 980M laptop I've found is this Metabox (Clevo) P170SM-A, for $2,677.00 AUD. Specs include the i7-4710MQ, 8GB RAM, 250GB SSD + 1TB HDD, Windows 8. Link.
You'd have to help me understand whether or not that's a bad deal, relative to your region.

Thank you for all this. It really helps. I think I may end up going with it. The version I'm getting is off Acer's online store and comes with a 1TB HDD and a 128GB SSD, but I could always switch out the SSD for a higher model once prices drop a bit more.
I'd heard about the wireless problems, but if it can be solved with updates that's fine. The thing with the screen is new, but I can deal with it if it can be adjusted.
I do sort of wish I could get that version with the 4K monitor, but even with the sale going I imagine it'd be outside my budget. They don't seem to sell that version on their store anyway.
Thank you on the recommendation of that cooling pad. I'd been meaning to get one and that one seems nice.
Don't even bother with the 840M. Don't bother with the 850M either unless it's one with GDDR5 RAM, because the 850M has both GDDR3 and GDDR5 versions.
What is more important ram on the board or ram on the graphics card. im debating between two laptops priced very similarly... ASUS G751JT CH71 vs Sager Np8278-s
Sager has a 6gb ram gtx970m with 8 gigs on board ram
ASUS has a 3gb ram gtx 970m with 16 gigs on board ram...
any help?
Many thanks! You can always upgrade your RAM. You can't upgrade your VRAM. All else being equal I'd go with the 6GB GTX 970M.
Hi all!
Not sure if any fellow Canadians can chime in but I'm looking for a gaming system that I can play the latest games on high (or better). I've strictly owned consoles in the past, but getting older and having a wife monopolizing the tv at night I'm hoping to get something fairly powerful but portable (15" screen max, 13 preferably). Also prefer it to be a step above current next gen consoles if possible, graphics wise. It looks like I7, 8gb, nvidia 860 or better go for approx $1000 USD. Where are the Canadians purchasing from? Newegg...td...FS, BB? I was looking at some lenova but there are lots of screen complaints. Also saw some entry level Alienware and Eurocom items (both 13" I think). There are great used deals on kijiji but I'm a bit Leary about buying used :/. Lots of US Gamers are mentioning the acer nitro and a gigabyte unit off newegg.....my assumption is that our low dollar and taxes/duties will greatly impact the all-in delivered price so I'm hoping to find something on a Canadian site, or ebay.ca....help?
preferred budget is $1000, absolute max $1250. CDN.
Upon researching more, it's the GDDR3 version. I'm leaning more towards the Acer Aspire V7-482PG-5642 now since it's down to ~$600 at the moment. Only thing I'm iffy on is the screen being 1366 x 768. The GeForce GT 750M seems to be solid for playing the fancy stuff at medium-high mix settings, and I guess the non-1080 screen means it's not gonna have to worry about spitting out higher res (unless I HDMI it to another monitor right?).
Last question from me as I continue to mull over this... how long do gaming laptops hold up? In terms of the actual hardware. Do they conk out after a few years from all the heat and gruntwork and stuff? Will one of those ASUS ROG units last 4 years or should I expect less? (If the lifespan of the hardware is short, should one use another machine for simple stuff like web browsing and Microsoft Office and stuff while keeping the gaming laptop for gaming and, in my case, video production and other design work?) Thanks again for all your help guys.
Also: Does anyone know where the adaptive brightness/dynamic contrast settings are? I've been looking for some way to disable it but not entirely sure how.
Can you give a bit more information, on what those are and when you notice them activating?
The 850M is far superior to the 750M. I'd reconsider.
Essentially, the monitor changes its brightness/backlight intensity to match the brightness of content on the screen. I browse NeoGAF in Dark theme and it has been very noticeable switching between a mostly dark gray page to a totally white page (i.e. Google). It wouldn't be such an annoyance except that the screen has very slight "flickering" as it's transitioning.
I think I have managed to disable it when plugged into an outlet, but it still happens when on battery. It's inconsistent however. Having read on it a bit it seems to be tied to a setting called "Display Power Saving Technology" in the Intel HD Graphics Control Panel but I'm wondering if there is some other setting I may be missing.
Also for those with quad-core CPUs (especially in 15.6 inch laptops) I strongly recommend getting Intel Extreme Tuning Utility and undervolting. I've set a Dynamic CPU Voltage Offset of -85mV and gotten a decrease of about 7C under load. I'm going to fiddle with underclocking and undervolting a bit and see if I can get any more. Always make sure you run stress tests and thoroughly check temps and settings if you decide to do this.
If the HP Envy 14t is similar in build to the 15t (2014 model), I dunno if a 1080 display+850mM(GDDR3) is worth it for $800. Videos of the new 15t show it to be bulky, not such a great screen and HDD/memory is hard to get to. Apparently nice keyboard though. This guy even found the GPU in his model to be a downgrade compared to what HP lists.
I guess it's hard for me to know whether 1366x768 is gonna be an issue compared to 1080 on the Acer V7's, since none are in stores around me to check out in person. That thing seems to have the dimensions/weight I want while still being able to play the odd game on medium with solid frame rates with that 750M. It's just that screen res I'm not sure about, it's an extra $100 or so to source a refurb/used 1080 model (so $600 vs $700).
But I definitely appreciate the input from this thread overall!
Country: USA
Budget: $900
Size: Not too picky on the size
Usage: gaming, music production, animation, photoshop
Hey guys been lurking through this thread for a bit, I'm still new to he laptop game. I want something that will play the newest games for a while. I hope I'm not asking for too much. So far I've been looking at the Lenovo Y50 with the Core i5 and 860m 2GB for $889, I'm not sure if there are better options out there for that price. I'm mostly worried about getting the Core I5 4200H over the Core i7 version. I don't want to spend this much money on this thing and have an out of date laptop by the end of next year, but I cant go any higher than $900.
